Can someone explain what they are in simple terms?

Per Audacia Ad Astra

"The Forerunners were a very advanced civilization, coming to power after the disappearance of another race, known to them as the Precursors. The Forerunners reached their peak before activating the Halo Array around 100,000 years prior to 2552, in the closing days of the Forerunner-Flood War." So Basically, the Forerunners where the most advanced civilization in the Halo Canon. (We barley know anything about them, but a novel will soon be released about them, and hopefully we will learn more)

Are they all dead?

Yes, they all died when they activated Halo.

Yes, but what are they, like humans, robots, human-robots?

Well, the Forerunner may not be all wiped out...some could have survived in shield worlds to avoid the Halo array's firing. But, suffice it to say, if any of them survived, they haven't made their presence known for 100,000 years.

It's unknown also what the Forerunner looked like...although they have a similar shape to humanity.

this is another picture but i dont know if they are humans or forerunner http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/File:Cryptum_-_Cover.jpg

They aren't all "dead" per se, but all the remaining ones (the ones on the ark) went on the great journey after they activated the halos.

What the great journey is and how one goes on it is anyones guess however.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

The Forerunner were the most advanced race ever known, they lived some 100,000 years ago and were wiped out when they built and activated the Halo rings to destroy the Flood.

The simple answer would be yes.

The more complicated answer is just below, however if you haven't played halo 3, it will contain some spoilers.

However, there are several clues, such as shield worlds specificly designed to make survival of the halo arrays within the milky way possible. Aside from that, there are the mysterious forerunner planet at the halo 3 legendary ending, while this is no undeniable proof, the final terminal in halo 3 does suggest that a forerunner AI (medican bias) sent the chief to a population of forerunners in the attempt to achive their forgiveness.

No they didn't, many managed to reach the Shield Worlds and wait out the activation of the Rings until the Flood became dormant. They then left their Shield Worlds, reseeded the galaxy of the lives they'd managed to catalogue and then passed down the Mantle to humanity to reclaim their fallen empire.

The remaining Forerunners departed the galaxy (likely in self-imposed exile) and weren't seen again.

there just aliens but when they saw the threat of the flood they built halo to wipe it out all the other races where just starting out but they where advance they copied all the DNA of the others races and then activated halo so after the halo blast killed every thing in the universe all the others could unfortunately they didnt have time to copie there DNA so they died out but they flood some how lived

I'll correct this...

The Forerunners were an enigmatic Tier 1 species that were thrown into a war against an extra-galactic alien threat - the Flood. After a 300 year long war (in which billions of Forerunners were killed, note that their population numbered in the trillions) they built the Halo rings as a last resort weapon to use against the Flood.

Mendicant Bias (a Forerunner AI) became rampant and sided with the Gravemind, so the Forerunners created a new AI named Offensive Bias to repel Mendicant and the Gravemind in the final battle. The remaining Forerunners retreated into the Shield Worlds, the Didact fired the Rings which killed all life capable of hosting the Flood organism within 3-radii of the galactic center and the Flood became dormant as they had no "food".

you posted about precursors and forgot they were the most advanced race?

Yeah, they're also not "dead," they left the galaxy on the true Great Journey after the rings fired.

according to the encyclopedia and terminals that is (although plenty of them were still killed in the ring effect though)

If the forerunners created the setinels then dosnt that mean the setinel beam is a forerunner weapon?

Yes the sentinels are Forerunner creations and their lasers are also of Forerunner creation. So, yes.

US Coast Guard prepares for massive rescue mission after Iranian fleet sinks off shore. Reports say a small thunderstorm caused most of the ships to simply...fall apart.

I'm still a bit sketchy on the details... How exactly did the Forerunners have knowledge of the human race and know we would one day take over? Wouldn't we have been wiped out by Halo?

If I remember correctly, a Forerunner observed some humans on Earth.

They were wiped out by the Halo rings, but the Forerunners kept DNA samples and restored humanity, or something like that.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I was under the assumption that some of the Forerunners stayed on earth to teach the fledgling humanity after the re-seeding. I always figured Guilty Spark was partially correct in his statement that Master Chief WAS Forerunner because of cross-species breeding with the Forerunners in ages long past.

Of course the hundreds of thousands of years overseeing Installation 04... only to have it invaded by TWO alien races and releasing the Flood... I'd probably have been rampant at that point myself.

You were under the wrong impression. The Librarian was the only Forerunner on Earth, the only reason Spark refers to humans to be the same as Forerunners is because they inherited the Mantle which makes them Reclaimers (as the Forerunners were to the Precursors).
