"In Tutela pro Tribus!"

Had an interesting idea for a side-story:

During the creation of SPARTAN-III's we learn through the books, that they were more aggressive, and less prone to being puppet-like indoctrinated soldiers that followed orders without question (Look at EMILE of Noble Team). We also know that Dr.Halsey was, at the same time, feeling guilty for what she did to the Spartan-II's and was trying to find ways to atone for that.

SO...at around the time that M.Chief S-117 jumps into slipspace aboard a covenant ship, and as a squad of ODST's were falling on New Mombasa, we know that there are VERY few....if any...Spartans left.

We ALSO know, that all Spartans are officially declared as MIA.

Sounds like a perfect breeding ground for a group of S-III's to disappear. And go Rogue.

Under the help of Dr.Halsey and/or one of her personal AI constructs, a group of Spartan-III's decide (after learning that in all reality, ONI Section 3 considers them little more than cannon-fodder), that they are going to survive this by going TRULY MIA. They fake their own deaths and/or disappearances, and go into hiding.

After years of lurking in the shadows and performing their own Geurilla-style tactics against the covenant (which leads to rumors of a last remaining spartan team which can never be confirmed), they eventually come out as the Covenant Civil War reaches its peak and the Elites ally with the UNSC.

Enter REAPER Team. 5 Reamaining Spartan III's who basically act almost as mercs. They choose which missions to fight and which not to. They report to no-one in the UNSC top-brass except to the one who hires them.

(REAPERS...always there, always lurking in the shadows..you never know who they are or where they come from...but they are always there, lurking and ready to kill)

No longer will they take suicide missions, no longer will they do it at the whim of some power-hungry admiral. But now they fight on THEIR terms.

The only way they are able to get away with this? Because they ARE Spartans...and ONI knows what an asset they are, so they have little choice but to agree with the REAPER's terms.

Hey...it could happen! ;)

I thought that all SIIIs died before the Fall of Reach. But it sounds like a good story anyway.

If all S-III's died before the fall of Reach, then we wouldn't have Noble Team.

Then we have a small group of s-III's as well as a couple S-II's on ONYX...and let's not forget that S-II "Kurt" was declared MIA after ONI Section 3 faked his death in order to train the new generation of Spartans.

And if you THOUGHT that they were all dead...then I guess their plans to fake their deaths worked on YOU! ;)

You have a point, but Noble team being SIIIs is considered a canon break.

Well that's debatable...what IS Canon, really? Is it the books? The games? The fanfics?

I personally am one to believe that the games are the canon and everything else is secondary..."Halo: Ghosts of Onyx. Based on the bestselling xbox game!"

Bungie have said that the games and books are synonymously canon. Game canon overrides book canon, but that doesn't mean that one can use non-conflicting game canon to destroy book canon.

Anyway, this idea sounds pretty good but the Spartans were effectively indoctrinated from a very, very young age. They wouldn't know how to rebel.

You say that, but Soren in Pariah from Evolutions ended up trying to join the Insurrectionists.

Exactly. And there were times when even the Master Chief was questioning his orders...and he was a S-II...WAY more indoctrinated than a Spartan III.

I'll use EMILE of Noble as another perfect example..that dude had an attitude that would be perfect for a member of REAPER team...he would totally be the type to say "EFF all this! I am outta here!"

"Ghosts of Onyx" also has a few possible REAPER candidates.

One thing you forgot: Spartan IIIs decided to join when they were six or seven for vengeance. They want to be where they are, and they could flunk out if they really wanted to leave.

Which just adds fuel to the idea of the tale! They had more control over their own choices. I know if I were in their boots and learned I was nothing more than Cannon Fodder...I'd sure as -blam!-e tell ONI to eff off and I would be outta there so fast it would make their heads spin.

And if Dr.Halsey was around to aid in that process...the formula is perfect. Who's to say that (I wanna say OMEGA Platoon? Kurt's 1st batch of S-III's?), were 100% killed off? What if one or 2 of them happened to survive? We know JUN Survived REACH...where is he? Could his death have been faked and he join the ranks of REAPER?
Whatabout those who supposedly were killed at Site 67 on ONYX? Suppose a couple of THEM had survived?

So many Spartans...all MIA....MISSING IN ACTION....meaning officially speaking....NONE can be properly accounted for. NONE.

So why not have 5 or 6 come out of the shadows after 10 years of being MIA saying: "We're here to fight...on OUR terms."?

It would be interesting is all I'm saying...an interesting FanFic for anyone wanting to run with it...and they would have some HARDCORE attitudes, lemme tell ya. hahaha.

I really like the concept you have here, but at the time that Earth was under attack, Halsey had already left to go to Onyx, hadn't she?

I mean, she only found out completely about the S-III's during First Strike which was between Installation 04 (a) being destroyed, and the Covenant finding Earth.
