"In Tutela pro Tribus!"

After looking through some people's "artwork" I feel I have to say something.

This is not a rant, nor is it an attempt at slander, but I hope it will open some eyes out there.

Im a graphic designer professionally, and lemme first say that while it is great to try new things, make some collages, swap backgrounds and such (some of the BEST wallpapers come out that way), don't take a picture from the internet, throw a Photoshop filter on it to make it look painted and call it your own art. That is copyright infringement and could potentially get you into ALOT of trubble...(this goes for anyone who thinks they can pull the wool over our eyes by doing the above steps)

RULES OF THE BUNGIE.NET PUBLIC FORUMS
Last Updated: 16 Aug 2010

The Bungie.net Terms of Use and Code of Conduct apply to every part of Bungie.net, including this forum. Please read these pages and check back periodically for updates.

The Short Version

Bungie controls everything. You have no rights. Play nice.

1. Do not break the law or do anything that may cause Bungie to break the law.
2. Do not be selfish or a jerk.
3. Do not do anything at all that may impede normal, reasonable, on-topic discussion.

If you make a collage, call it such.

If it a fan-based and fan-made wallpaper...do the same.

Don't ever think that putting a "paint" filter on something, or cutting-and-pasting some images together, or tracing over a screenshot with a WACOM tablet can fool us into thinking it is your original art, especially when it is a VERY distinctive image (lots of images of EMILE from cutscenes comes to mind).

As I said before, I am an artist by profession. It is how I earn my living, and to see things like this is a slap in my face and is a violation of Bungie's terms of service (as quoted above).

Please, for the love of God, be honest in your dealings on these forums. Some of the art...the REAL art...out there is simply INCREDIBLE (anyone see those paintings of Master Chief fighting side by side with a forerunner hero? Talk about WOW), and lets keep those coming! But if it isn't original, don't post it here.

What? I haven't seen a lot of this stuff in-game, even without the paint filter.

Everyone's got to start somewhere. Most who create art in this forum are just people putting something together in their spare time; they aren't professionals.

Now I'm not an artist myself but it would be like a published author coming in here and saying "yeah these fan fiction aren't terrible but they aren't good either."

As I said at the beginning of my post, everyone's got to start somewhere. Whether that's photoshopping an image, or writing a poorly constructed chapter.

I'm sure that when you first started using photoshop you weren't amazing and completely original with what you crafted.

Plagiarism is something else entirely.

Most of the time, a "Halo©Bungie/Microsoft" is enough.

additionally a rant about how people are not allowed to use it commercially really help.

if there is a problem with copyright without proper crediting. e-mails often fix it. ask to get the image removed, and most people will.

In the end, it's not likely that Bungie will go nuts of you used a picture with their copyrighted material, unless you make money on it...

"Only the Fallen are Heroes, while the ones who still stand are villains"

I know where he is coming from though. Should the manipulated screenshots and renders really be called "Artwork?" Seeing as it takes less time to fiddle around in photoshop with a cut out Emile and paste him on any background you want and then throw a bunch of filters over it to try and make a cool effect.

I mean yes some are amazingly talented at this such as Halcylon. But in the end I highly doubt he calls it "his" artwork. Maybe rename such things to "manipulated shots" or something fancy. It is a pet peeve of mine where pictures like those are getting attention when some look like they took an hour or 2 to complete. While full blown drawings such as Master Chief with a Forerunner Hero, Some of my more detailed drawings can take up to weeks to finish.

I guess the idea of working really hard on something you want to see some recognition for all those hours spent putting in the fine details in your piece. Only to be posted over by photoshop manips which the creator calls "artwork" does p*** off a few of us artists.

Toss in a grenade and let god sort them out.

I think this thread is a cry in the dark but let's back it up with some informative help.

Completely agree. But there is no real way of showing on how much work the "artist" actually put into the image etc. so you can not determine whether it was actually infringing copyright.

Very true...unless it is blatantly obvious as I posted as examples earlier. As I said before, Im a professional, so I have an eye for this kind of stuff...it's kind of my job.

Now, I have seen some "kids" drawings on this forum that are, quite frankly, terrible. But ya know what? I give em a full thumbs-up because I can SEE the hard effort that they put into it, and I can SEE that it took alot of time.

But, that grunt example I linked just drives me bonkers. It takes a total of 30 seconds to do that image.

Step 1) Upload Screenshot
Step 2) Click the appropriate Filter Type
Step 3) Save
Step 4) Upload to Bungie and say "Am I an awesome artist or what?!"

Not cool. Not cool at all.

It is certainly a slap in the face, not just to me, but to those who do the more amazing work, such as the Halcyon that was mentioned a few posts ago. It is, for lack of a better metaphor...the weed that chokes out the true beauty or someone's real work.

All I'M saying is this:
Call it a collage/montage/edit, whatever it is...be honest.
Don't call it YOUR art when it isn't your own. It's insulting.

Re-posting and quoting him to echo what he said...

ps...are you the artist that DID that Master Chief with a Forerunner Hero work? If so, it's bloody brilliant!

Nope, I wish I was but if you want to see my art just go to my gallery thread.

XBL Ambassador, Graphic Designer, Maker of Halo panoramas and full 360 degree views. Halo Panoramas

I can see where this is coming from and I like how you mention you're a professional multiple times. I guess that is supposed to make your statements more believable.

It is true that some worthless pieces get more attention than others. Best way to combat that is to continually market yourself to the general public so you can get the recognition you feel you deserve.

What is art to someone might not be art to another.

Oh and I'm not a professional graphic designer, so everything I just posted was a waste.

But I see the reason behind the copyright stuff. I highly doubt bungie is going to go after some little 9 year old kid that made a collage and put it on deviantart.

I didn't state my profession as a way to make my comments more or less valid than anyone else's, Stuckers, but it does give me a different perspective.

What makes that comment "a waste" compared to anything I have to say or what anyone else has to say, for that matter? That is the idea behind a forum...to get people talking to eachother about matters of interest or concern.

My profession just gives me another perspective, that's all.

But I see the reason behind the copyright stuff. I highly doubt bungie is going to go after some little 9 year old kid that made a collage and put it on deviantart.

I agree completely with this statement, but when Bungie locks out certain threads simply because they are put in the wrong category, or blacklists someone else for saying something inappropriate, it would be nice if they took similar action here in the Gallery forums.

The only problem WITH a Gallery, is that there is so much to deal with. I use DeviantArt myself, and there are HUNDREDS of categories to submit your work under. Everything ranging from "FanArt" to "Game Design - Concept Art" and a bajillion others for film, photography, writing, ect. So of COURSE I don't expect Bungie to police this gallery in a cut-throat way...

This thread is, I guess, a plea to all the submitters out there...

Just be honest in what you CLAIM is your own work.

...that's not too ignorant, pompous, haughty or even too much to ask...
...is it?

(Edit and PS) http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=44566369 this is some of the AMAZING stuff I'm talking about!

I originally went to Vancouver Film School for Classical Animation and Digital Character Animation, specializing in Facial Animation. After working at a Studio on Saturday Morning Cartoons for a couple years, I ended up getting alot of side-commissions working on website designs, logos, tattoos, and the like.

Working with a Grid and with Type...the way I was trained was to eyeball everything. As an animator, we have to produce up to 200 drawings a day, so we tend to cheat everything we can. A grid is only a guide, and eventually, you put so much mileage on your pencil that a grid-type guide is almost instinctive.

LOL I DID, however, have one RUTHLESS "Composition and Perspective" instructor who would crumple drawings up and in front of everyone tell you that your work looked like BLAMMITY-BLAM-BLAM! and tell you to re-draw it so it didnt make him vomit from looking at it.

Playing with TYPE on the other hand? Kinda the same as the grid. Not necessarily eyeballing it...but just play around with it until it feels right.

Back on topic though:

I'm glad you agree with the original post...I hate to sound like a pompous jerk on a high horse...but someone had to say it.

I just hope the guilty parties listen up.

Here is a GOOD example of someone actually saying what it IS rather than claiming its his own "art"

How'd you find me?

Though I see your point, art can be anything. A circle with a dot in the center may be bland and boring to someone, but amazing to someone else. Though them taking a screen shot and putting it through a photoshop filter might not take as long as something someone hand draws, it's still art, only their interpretation of it. As long as it doesn't break copyright law, it's fine.
