I just purchased this, it's plugged in, do I need to download something for it to work?

Yes, you need to install the controller drivers.

XBCD works well.

I got the drivers, most of the time XP doesn't recognise the USB adapter....sometimes it does, just faulty wiring?

No its probably not faulty wiring, its most likely the drivers. Is there a light on there? I'm pretty sure the new adapters have a light on there. could be faulty wiring but i doubt it.

First plug it into the USB on the back of the computer.
Second if the adapter is like the one I had (with lite) it was ok but I had to fix it avery other week the mettle cover on the USB end would come out and break the single strand groud wire and it would not recognize the controler

So i finaly just hard wired it. Heck, I don't have an Xbox just the controler so i don't have to change it back.

If you bought the controller, then it should come with drivers, or have a plug-and-play function. If not, then go get an Xbox controller driver, like the others said.

People are dumb.....

I HAVE the drivers, I have XBCD, okay?

It's installed, but about 90% of the time, I plug the adapter in and get "Windows XP cannot recognize the USB device."

So I keep unplugging it, replugging it, and eventually, it works. Eventually.

are you pluging it in a front plug or back for some reason my front one will work with somethings but not others like my controler so try the back usb port.
