After Halo 2, the story progression pretty much stagnated and changes to the gameplay were so few as to be unnoticeable. The last three Bungie-developed Halo games have all blurred together in mind into one Xbox 360 port of Halo 2, so these "Pick Your Favorite" threads always come down to the first two games for me.
Since Halo 2 relied on its incredible multiplayer mode for its success, it hasn't stood the test of time nearly as well as the first game. Halo 1 seemed to focus a lot more on telling an good story and presenting a interesting universe than the second installment. In Halo 2 the locations seem to change randomly and the cutscenes struggle to connect each level, and there are plenty of plot points that seem thrown in just to try and keep us interested (See: Another Halo!).
Not to mention the game's failure to wrap up its own plot points, resulting in Halo 3 dedicating its entire story to tying up loose ends. Halo 1, on the other hand, was satisfying in itself. It didn't leave me hanging, hoping that I would buy the next installment out of sheer loyalty to the series. Bungie operated under the assumption that I believe every writer should operate on: Write this as if you could never expand on it.
