Onyx was a artificial planet built by the forerunners to protect the entrance to a shield world. Underneath the seemingly normal surface of the planet, it is really constructed of trillions of sentinels. At the center of the 'planet' is a room containing a slipspace portal similar to the one in Halo 3, but smaller. The portal, rather than transporting to a different location in space, moves you into a dyson shell that exists in the same location, but in slipspace. Surrounded and compressed by a slipspace bubble, the dyson shell is safe from the Halos and much bigger on the inside than the outside.

When Halo 04 was activated/destroyed, the onyx installation was activated. Dr. Halsey, Fred, Linda, Kelly, and a few SIIIs whose names I can't remember entered the shield world shortly before the portal sealed itself. Onyx 'exploded' into trillions(or however many. Trillions seems rather small) of sentinels. Those inside the shield world are presumably trapped inside.
