Subject: How would you have defended Reach? (Good Thread!)

We are determined that before the sun sets on this terrible struggle our flag will be recognized throughout the world as a symbol of freedom on the one hand and of overwhelming force on the other.

Primary Resources:
1 UNSC Destroyer
-UNSC Iroquois
3 UNSC Frigates
-UNSC Savannah
-UNSC Grafton
-UNSC Saratoga
2 UNSC Prowlers
1 UNSC Heavy Frigate
1 UNSC Halcyon-class Cruiser
-UNSC Pillar of Autumn
A Platoon of SPARTAN-IIs

SPARTAN-III Teams:
Echo
Beta Red
Gauntlet
Noble

385,421,100 Available Military manpower.
3 Refit and Repair Stations
Anchor 9

Base Story, you are and Admiral, and these are the asset you command at first , not, in the story, you can say reinforcements arrived or you can capture and enemy vessel ect.

My Battle plan from an earlier post:

I would have used SPARTAN Teams Noble, Gauntlet, Echo, and Beta Red, plus that Platoon of SPARTAN IIs to de-shield the Spires, and have the Frigates Grafton and Saratoga to fire a few salvos of Archer Missile Pods at them to disable them.

At this point, Covenant Supercarrier - Long Night of Solace, wouild have been detected, I would have Grafton & Saratoga retreat and send out Pelicans and Falcons to pick our troops up.

By then, the Long Night of Solace would have pulled back into geo-synchrinous orbit over Reach, and was comprimised. Once the troops were back on the Frigates, I would send the Grafton up to help with Operation - UPPERCUT, and the Frigate Saratoga to reinforce the besieged ONI: Sword Base. Once at Anchor 9, I would have the Grafton use its 50mm PDFs to help the Sabre Teams mop up the Covenant Recon flights. Then, I would proceed with the operation. When at the Ardent Prayer, the Covenant Corvette, I would have the Savannah and Grafton use their 50mm PDF to knock out the Plasma Torpedo launchers on the Corvette, and Have the Platoon of SPARTAN IIs and aPlatoon of UNSC Army soldiers, to help the taking of the Cpmmunication Room, Hanger Bay, and Bridge. If the slipspace bomb were to fail, I would leave 3 Army Soldiers behind, and evac the SPARTAN IIs along with the remaining soldiers. I would call the Frigate Savannah and Grafton back to Anchor 9, refit-and-repair, and send them down to Reach to reinforce the troops fighting in New Alexandria, they would deploy Noble, and Echo to clear Traxus Tower and assist in the evacuation there, and bring the missile defense system back online at the plaza area to assist in Civilian evacs. Beta-Red and Gauntlet would eliminate the Jammers in New Alexandira while the UNSC Saratoga arrive over the city, the Now 3 Ship Strike Force made up of the Saratoga, Grafton, and Savannah, would eliminate the 3 Corvettes over the city using MACs and continue assitstance in the Evactuation of civilians from Newe Alexandria.

I would then use any remaining free orbital support to aid in the destruction of the 2 CCS Class Battlecruisers that would later arrive.

Finnaly, I would dispatch the Grafton and Savannah to assist in the Battle over Reach, and would send the UNSC Saratoga to recieve the Package, and deliver it to the Pillar of Autumn, I would put SPARTAN Teams Noble, Gauntlet, Echo, Beta-Red and the Platoon of SPARTAN IIs on the Pillar of Autumn and cover it while it flees Reach.

Feel free to point out flaws in my battleplan.

Update* NOVA Bomb now in invintory, only available late in the battle.

Seems pretty solid to me. But it also relies on the Covenant reacting the same way they did in the original story. But not a bad plan.

  • 12.08.2010 12:35 PM PDT

I would get my whole army the hell outta Reach's atmosphere and let the Covenant do their thing, while in reality I just planted a NOVA bomb in there.

Yes, but write a wall like I did explaining what you would have done, using the available resources.

And so, Achronos lifted the banhammer high above his head, exclaming "You shall not sully these forums again!" And with one, deft blow, he brought the banhammer down upon the offender, and slew him.

Bah, what's the point? You're only goingt to troll, flame or E-raip me.

Really, this. Strategic retreat= Defend earth with massive amount of forces while still taking out hundreds of covenant ships.

I'll do mine in outline form.

Comm station goes offline
Military personnel go missing
Noble Team sent to investigate
Covenant forces engaged
Sword Base comes under attack
Send a contingent of Marines to assist in defense
Send Noble team to assist in the defense of the base
Send ODSTs to infiltrate into Covenant camp (as apposed to Spartans)
Scout the area
Launch counter attack
Position capital ships around the battle
Have them use 50mm point defense guns to take out Covenant air assets
Stealth towers destroyed
Long Night of Solace engages UNSC forces
Full scale retreat ordered to all units
Heavy casualties on the ground, at least a frigate is destroyed
First set of UNSC reinforcements arrive at Reach
Long Night of Solace sends corvettes around Reach
(My own adaptation of operation Uppercut)
Send what space forces we have to ambush a corvette.
Disable torpedo launchers
Disable engines
Have Noble Team, Echo team, and Gauntlet team all board the ambushed corvette
Give the Spartan attack force access to a Smart A.I.
Send marine, and ODST reinforcements aboard the corvette
Dock the Corvette on the Super Carrier
Give the assault force 1 objective
Capture the bridge of the ship
Insert A.I into the main computer system of the ship
Have the A.I turn off the artificial atmosphere, killing a majority of the crew and forces aboard the ship.
Do the same for the other ships docked with the Super carrier
At this point the main covenant force arrives at Reach (700 ships)
More UNSC forces return (nearly 150 ships)
UNSC ODPs online
Have ODPs fire in a pattern where the Covenant armada is always under fire.
Spartans aboard the Super carrier are sent to the ground
Leave the Smart A.I on board to control the ship
Fragment itself to control Corvettes as well
Use the corvettes as Kamikazes
Have the Super carrier fire torpedos, and energy projectors on the arriving fleet
UNSC reinforcement fleet positioned around the planet to reinforce any areas that ODPs are getting overwhelmed
Super carrier destroyed by overwhelming Covenant forces
Covenant forces break through the ODP line- nearly 450 ships left
New Alexandria is attacked.
Noble team is sent in to activate SAM sites.
Noble 6 takes to the skies above the city, defending it
Covenant break through 6s stand
Troops landed just outside the city
Evac of the city is under way
Full scale land assault on the city occurs
HQ set up in the center of the city looses contact with the outskirts
Entire army unit lost
Armored unit of tanks, warthogs of various designs, and some air assets
Gauntlet sent to investigate
Gauntlet engages large force.
Engage a Scarab.
Scarab destroyed
Overrun by covenant air forces
Take refuge within the Metro system
Make way back to HQ with expeditionary force in hot pursuit
Echo team sent to reinforce Gauntlet
both teams successful in defense.
Covenant make push into city center
HQ evaced
Both spartan teams sent to ODP generators under attack
Heavy losses on both sides, nearly half the UNSC ships are destroyed, ODPs are getting destroyed... UNSC ships left 85, Covenant ships left 370
Spartan II evaced from generators, replaced by 2 spartan 3 teams
Spartan IIs sent to Sword base
Noble team sent to sword base
Spartans defend Halsey
Success
Halsey heads to Castle with 5 Spartan IIs and Jun.
The rest of Noble and Spartan IIs sent with the package to the PoA
Make it to the PoA
Defend it from a CCS battle cruiser
Escape from Reach
Gauntlet and Echo teams retreat from Generators, head to CASTLE
ODPs fall.
Remaining UNSC space fairing vessels retreat from system
Reach has officially fallen no contact with other colonies after this point
Castle base is last UNSC stronghold, with nearly 15 spartans, of various classes.

PoA heads to Alpha Halo, events go differently with nearly 20 armed Spartans. They are able to defeat the entire covenant force present using various gorilla tactics. Flood is not released.

They are able to capture the Truth and Reconciliation. UNSC engineers refit ship with Archers, and they leave the system.

Events of First strike go pretty much the same, except the UNSC has more Spartans available. The defense of Earth is also easier.

What a waste....

Evac everyone at the first sign of Covenant, pack up, nuke the Forerunner relic, and GTFO.

Have all UNSC be evac'd from Reach. Take 'em to Earth. Place NOVA bombs in space around Reach. I win.

take every slipspace drive from every ship

use them all to make a giant slipspace asploderupture all the covenant ships

Epic Defense Plan as Follows:

1.Get Nova Bomb to core so it can explode and destroy Reach, all UNSC facilities with sensitive data, and Covenant ground troops.

2. Regroup whole fleet to Earth

3. Epic battle

4.?????

5. Finish the fight.

  • 12.08.2010 6:14 PM PDT

I mean, Reach was a lost cause anyway, and everyone knew it. The UNSC lost a fair amount of forces during that battle, forces that could've been used in i.e. the battle of Earth.
It may sound simplistic to just nuke the whole area, but The Covenant was occupied with glassing it, which seems to me like a highly symbolical act, and there were plenty of ships there that the UNSC could've obliterated with some nukes.

1. Do everything as planned, including sacrificing a SII for a Supercarrier, until det events of the level Exodus, thus when the proper FALL of Reach starts.

2. Fool the Covenant that I want to hold my ground and fight till the end, by engaging for a few minutes.

3. Then I would gather all my ships and as many evacuation shuttles as possible, let the Covenant have their moment of joy believing we just retreated like cowards, and that they'd slay us later after glassing Reach, and then I would slipspace the hell out of there, and letting a NOVA bomb detonate near Reach or actually preferably something slightly smaller than it..

My Screenshots / My Group / Remember to follow the rules or you will get trapped in a box.

With an army of super carriers led by the UNSC Trafalgar.

  • 12.09.2010 12:43 AM PDT

I actually had a story written up that i was going to post on fanfiction about a Admiral defending Earth well into the Occupation using lessons learned at Reach

  • 12.09.2010 3:56 AM PDT

First i would send all my forces to the ODP generators
I'm talking a regiment protecting each of them
I would use suicide Longswords in mass to Zerg rush the Ships while the destroyers distract them
I would make sure The ODP'S don't get destroyed
I would put the Frigates up front so that if the Covenant break through they will be weakened going against our Capital ships
When we fall back we would split up into tiny groups and let the remaining ODP'S pick off the CCS'S and SC'S
We would ambush them on both sides of Reach's moon
Our remaining ships would go planetside and would have the remaining missile regiments and planetside MAC guns take them
out and make sure we drop Nuclear mines on the way in so when they retreat they will get hit hard
Hold out and call for reinforcements
Once they arrive engage any remaining ships before they can run off
????
Profit and/or epic win

You're forgetting the backup that arrived between LNoS and Exodus. 60% of the UNSC fleet.

  • 12.09.2010 4:41 AM PDT

I would kill myself and then i will be left alone. :D

  • 12.09.2010 10:12 AM PDT

Who are we ? we are the ones to carry the third Reich to the sun were are SS!

i would have just created all the marines in to sparten IIIs and put the hurt on the covys

Cave Johnson here, we're done!

PS: If you are reading this comment while imagining my voice, don't panic. That's just a side effect of the testing.

Nova bombs everywhere, just everywhere I could possibly put them and destroy things. So yeah, I would take nine nova bombs, duct tape them together, even further magnifying the power of those bombs, and blow up the galaxy.

Because we all know that duct tape fixes everything.

Marley: next time try to be a little for inconspicuous.
John: What do you mean?
Marley: John, we grow lots of gear, right?
John: Yeah loads...
Marley: So try not to come back with a wasted girl and a packet of fertilizer!

Create a rear-guard action with the Trafalgar at the head of it to distract the covenant while remaining frigates evac all ground personnel with cruisers personally guarding them.

I wouldn't send any spartans to the surface. I'd send 10 spartans to get the data core from the circumference with support from shortswords so nobody would die.

Once all ground personnel have been evacuated and the circumference's data core has been neutralized all ships will withdraw from the system, using a NOVA bomb to block the entrance into sword base and the ruins below.

The PoA in much better shape jumps with the Trafalgar and a full compliment of spartans (hopefully) to Halo. The trafalgar and PoA evade the covenant ships. The PoA won't have to crash and all the ODST's and spartans can be sent (after a few days) to the swamp to block all entrance to the flood

This will give the covenant time to realize what was down there and not try to get past whatever measures the spartans used to block the entrance.

The master chief and all 20 spartans can then safely confiscate the Index without either the covenant or the flood being present.

The spartans and however many ODST's survived can capture the Truth and Reconciliation and then regroup with the Trafalgar and the PoA to jump to Earth with the Index, no spartan losses (i can only presume) and a covenant cruiser with a TON of data.

Behold, now the UNSC still has a sizable fleet, another supercarrier, the index, all 20 or so spartans and the PoA. With all this Earth may not even fall in the first place.

Do these gorilla tactics involve throwing barrels down ramps towards the enemy ? Surely the Skirmishers would jump over the barrels ?

Very easy to make a plan using hindsight....

Personally I would have tugged asteroids into orbit (a disantce from Reach and a long time before the Covenant appear) and place a nice little nuclear warhead on each...with a proximity detonator

  • 12.09.2010 1:33 PM PDT

I believe you are forgetting the 314 covenant ships that arrive after LNoS.
