Subject: Why did Captain Keyes carry around an unloaded pistol?

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Seriously, he may as well have carried nothing. "I don't keep it loaded" why not? Your race has been fighting a losing battle for 20+ years and you're not going to load your gun?
I know it doesn't really matter but this has always bothered me. Made me laugh too.

Well, he is a Naval Officer, and Naval Officers dont go into the battlefield and fight. Thery stay in their ships and blast other ships into oblivion.

He doesn't need bullets to kill.

Plus he has massive missiles and cannons, what good would a pistol serve him, he almost never leaves the ship.

This. And he does finally load his pistol when he travels Halo's surface (343 Guilty Spark level.)

He didn't have it loaded though lol Is he gonna hit them in the head with it?

Precisely. The M6D is quite a heavy pistol. Grunts get scared when they see an armed, ready enemy; can you imagine how they'll react when some crazy guy charges through, smoking a pipe, bopping their friends on their heads with one?

Keyes didn't get promoted to Captain for nothing!

No, listen, Keyes doesn't keep it loaded because he rarely has use for it. And he knows whe to load his gun too, he just doesn't keep it loaded.

Why would he keep a gun for protection when he doesn't have any ammo for it? If he was meaning to use it for protection then I'm sure he would have a few rounds in it.

It's also probably against UNSC code to have live ammunition in the command area of the ship. Kinda like the pipe thing.

I've got a fan!

Going by modern Navy customs, you cannot have a loaded firearm on the bridge. He was fudging the rules by even having a gun, and why they didn't stock any weapons between MC and the bridge is unknown, but there's your explanation for Keyes.

That's irrelevant. The more important question is: if the pistol isn't loaded, why is its magazine half-full when it appears?

I like the Mk V armor.

Real Life fact:

Officers aboard a naval ship almost always have a weapon at hand. Wither there combat knife or pistol.

You are not allowed to carry loaded weapons aboard the ship, unless:

Under Attack
In Ceremony
Active Wartime in known hostile areas

Ammo is normally stored in the Armory, or the Captain's personal safe.

I know, it's stupid to carry a gun and not have it loaded. Yeah I know, he doesn't really fight anyone in close combat, but still, why carry an unloaded pistol? And why not load it? I mean, whats the downside? And they didn't even have ammo in the bridge, whats up with that?

My jokes, so I don't lose them (ignore this):
ZedFish's Opinion on Sgt. Foley.
ZedFish's Forerunner Rickroll.

Officer 1: "Hey, let's play a prank on the Captain. We'll throw a bucket of water on him in the middle of the night!"
Officer 2: "HELL YEAH!"

...

*throws water*
*Keys wakes up*
*BANG, BANG*
*silence*
Keyes: "Whoops"

Good post, but there are a few things:

1: It was most definitively an "Active Wartime", as for the hostile area thing, the whole galaxy was a hostile area.

2: They were under attack.

3: They didn't have any ammo anywhere on the bridge, come on, if they are suddenly boarded they don't have time to walk way down to the armory for ammo. Besides, everyone on the bridge is needed to command the ship, they cant just walk away to go get ammo.
