So the consensus seems to be:
some form of karma/level system on Bnet
the ability to search forums/groups/content
update the damn site more often
focus on the Groups features, 7th column in general

Anything else? With regards to search, what are you not finding or having difficulties in find that a search functionality would make easier?

What sorts of activities do you guys see the 7th Column Council doing?

Oh yeah, don't mind me. I'm just the management overhead.
Woah, who's this guy? Never seen him before... Anyway, I had a popular topic a while back that abruptly died because of this sticky, so I might as well put all the good ideas to work. Post your thoughts:

* In 'My Profile' page, provide a tab link to 'My Threads' page, which is a list of all threads the user has created. Adding posts to favorites gets annoying.

* Decrease amount of threads allowed to be created by a member in 24 hour period to 2 or 3. The most threads I have ever made in one night is two. Any more and it's spam.

* Locked threads are deleted after a 24 hour period. The whole sticky/locked thread thing no longer matters because of the recent update. It's kinda pointless why they stay around. (idea change cont. by Pimp at Sea) This would really help when reading the forums and free up space on the front page, especially on the slower-moving forums like this one.

* Change the preview button to preview/spellcheck. No one ever uses it otherwise, and on the whole the grammar in these forums is awful.

* Add search function. Apparently it's coming Soon (not sure how to make the trademark thing)

* Add karma system (Not my idea). I'm not sure how this would be implemented, possibly a feedback system from moderators only or selected members...? It would help to see a member's status within Bnet, but the only question would be who that information is available to.

* Votes affect topic placement. For say, every five votes contributed to a poll thread, the thread would be bumped up to first page, just like if a post was contributed.

* Moderators in groups should have the same powers as moderators in all of Bnet, with the exception that their powers be confined to that group. For instance, they could blacklist, ban, type in other people's posts, and even change their color. I couldn't really see people abusing the system, and if they did, it's pretty easy to click the 'Leave this group' link. Moderators can't have all the fun. (part of idea cont. by J wak 117)

* Members are given the ability to delete their profiles, and start a new one if they so wish. Their name would be recycled for use by other members.

* (Moderators Only) All members have three chances. Every time a member flames, spams, or shows general disregard for the community, one chance is taken. When all three chances are taken, their account is banned. These chances would be renewed every month.

...hey hundredth post. By accident too. And you can't prove it wasn't.

All of those features are available except for the color change, which isn't all that necessary. I find that Italics is all I need when I'm editing a post, and no one really needs to know I'm a moderator of the group when I post.

-Quaere verum.

Got a report? Use the report tool or send a pm.
Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

If that's going to happen, it should only apply to the main forums. I protest outright against it applying to chapters. Think about how many threads get made when starting a new chapter...

It's already happened, but it only applies to the public boards.

Running Riot

I don't know how feasable this is, so I'll only make one request.

More GameViewer camera angles

Some maps don't even include some areas in their lists. The back liftroom hallway in Ivory Tower for example. I can understand why some areas would not be as important as others, but some maps are severely lacking in this area.

There should be some kind of retard filter, where you can type in the names of spammers who you want to never be able to contact you ever again in any way... through pm's AND the forums... maybe a few more threads per page too =)

and new forums... halo movie, Bungies next project stuff, and any other crap that winds up in the underground that should go somewhere else.

I feel a Karma system would be a nice edition to the forums.

* It could not be abused, if only Forum Ninjas or others with high ranks had control of it.

* You wouldnt have to worry about people being Un-noticed, because daily there really arent THAT many forum topics per room(for lack of a better word).

* It is fairly easy to tell when someone is sucking up, so you need not worry about people getting good karma when they are mean, angry people.

* With a Karma system there would be MUCH less flaming, and more helpful answers which is what the forums are for.

Second, I would like a search feature.

* My favorites list is getting cluttered.

* Simply bookmarking pages can make it hard to find what address you are looking for.

* The amount of Topics on the same thing will be cut in half, sure you will find 10 year olds that will think its funny/cool to have your own topic, but there are other, more mature people out there that will use the search feature and not be a neusance.

*Click* Psshhhhhhhh

As of 2/4/05:
Many new members have joined in the past few months. This is great for the .net community.

As of 2/5/05:
We have many new members, but some of our origonal/older members are loosing their intrest in bungie. I say a new feature could be added.

As of 2/5/05:
Some new members did not read the rules, which is becoming a problem, when they post something they shouldn't.

A topic merge option.

To clean up multiple posts in groups and, more importantly, all the Halo 3 topics in The Underground.

Explain more, please. I'm intrigued, but I don't know how it would work.

There you go Halifax.

The karma system is not a very good idea. Most people here know who they like and who they think are jerks. It's a power waiting to be abused.

What about being told by a popup when someone replies to one of your posts?

Slightly off topic. Does tinyurl have an expiration date for each link?

IDEA: Could you make it so that the "New post" image disappears once you have read the latest post? I believe that right now that image only appears and disappears after a set amount of time though I may be wrong

Multiple people quotes- The ability to quote multiple people without having to open up new brosers and copy and paste and all that crap. They show all the posts and and all you have to do is click on the reply button under thier post and it would automaticaly quote somebody so you can reply to multiple people.
Smiley faces- To show how you feel when you type a sentence so people don't take your post the wrong way and you can sum up an entire sentence, paragraph or post in one smiley emotion.

Moderators could use a bit more powers. Such as these:

Ability to ban people from using the PM system (and have all their messages disappear) or ban people from being able to use the 7th Column at all (for people who are problematic to lots of groups).

A whole thread of ideas.

  • 12.11.2005 4:43 PM PDT

yoo•zel- ('yoo-zhul): slang: vb.

Officium quod Fidelitas.

I’d really like email notification when I receive a PM. Most times I’ll simply leave my email up and since I get most of my updates on sites I visit, it makes it easier for me to respond to requests/updates/news, whatever. I think it’d be a good idea or at least useful, as long as it was an option.

Another thing that’d I’d like to see is direct linking to gold posts via the gold symbol. Here comes the Blizzard forums, but when a “blue” (admin) replies you can click on a blue Blizzard icon next to the thread that takes you directly to the post. I think this would be effective for bother Moderators and the Bungie Employees.

No. No. No.

If this happens, I will leave Bungie.net forever. Use emoticons like these if you want to express how you feel: =)

Fear not, VII Toast. Achronos has posted(more than once) that this is never going to happen.

Just saying..

Meh.

It should say the members location below their avatar... like most forums do. Anyway I'm too good to wait eight seconds for the profile page to load!

A spam thread page for moderators - so bad threads get closed quickly without irritating mods by messaging them about threads which have been locked by the time the log in. Basically you report a thread, and it appears on a page which all the mods can see. When it has been dealt with, it is deleted from the page.

The smiley faces were a joke. I just put that down to see what you would say.As for my real second idea is:
IM chatroom- How about making the post an IM chatroom so when you put a reply down you dont have to click back and then reenter everytime the post gets updated. No more enter, exit, enter, exit like we do now so the post can update itself. It gets really annoying. Everything will be done in real time.

I'm sure this has already been mentioned, but text under each user to say whether they are currently logged in or not.

"Last post" says what time, not just the date (may make the member area look cluttered though). It is also a link to their last post.

Update 7themes!

  • 12.21.2005 5:37 PM PDT

More interaction from the team. If it's just an occasional article about what they're working on, or even a new soapbox for once, it would be great. Anything you guys write hits all the major gaming sites - a few looks at some textures or something would be awesome. The humpday challenge and WU are not enough.

So the consensus seems to be:
some form of karma/level system on Bnet

A Karma system seens like a good idea, but I would pefer if interaction with it was kept to a minimum. The less members can interact with it, the less chance of someone figuring out a way to exploit it. I also would not like it becone something like a popularity meter, which many other sites' Karma systems have become.
the ability to search forums/groups/content
A search would be nice, but how extensive it is should be decided by how it will affect peformance. I want a search, but not at the expense of what we have now.

update the damn site more often
focus on the Groups features, 7th column in general

A perfect example is the chapter spotlight. It has not been updated since the launch of Bungie.net's new hotness. That was back in April 2004. Having Frankie join the team did not make up for the loss of Matt. I know in Bungie.net's current situation it is much harder to interact with the community. It was easier to know everyone when there was only a couple thousand people to deal with.
I think what the community really wants is more Bungie/Community interaction.

Anything else? With regards to search, what are you not finding or having difficulties in find that a search functionality would make easier?
I don't have a problem with the current chapter search, but what would really help is the old Chapter Directory. It gave you all the information one would need when deciding weather or not to join a chapter.

What sorts of activities do you guys see the 7th Column Council doing?
I see the 7th Column Council as a scaling of the interaction between Bungie and the Community. Like I said ealier, it was easier to know everyone when there was only a couple thousand members. What a council would do is basically be Bungie's voice on the forums. It would collectively do what Matt Soell and Sketchfactor had to do themselves. Just take part in the forums and know a little more than everyone else.
Having Bungie employee's post on the forums would be cool, and I'm sure everyone would enjoy talking to them. Unfortunately, game developing isn't what it used to be and they are all too busy working on the next project.
Since Bungie Employee's can't interact with the community, the council would do it for them.

In the old days, people could submit news to the 7th Column mainpage to be considered, such as when a new group was made, and Sketch would post it if it was appropriate.
Now, there isn't even a news portion of the 7th Column page. That would be an addition I would like to see.
Founders or members that had something important to tell everyone could submit their news to the 7th Column webpage and the Council would be the ones to find if it was appropiate or not, allowing Sketch and Frankie to focus on the Bungie.net frontpage.

Oh yeah, don't mind me. I'm just the management overhead.
Whatever you say. ;)

The group search feature seems to be playing up; I searched for "MSXL" in the group name, and it came back with nothing. Then, when I entered "Mr Smiley's Xbox Lounge" and clicked "Execute Group Search", it reverted to having MSXL in the group name bar, and the message "No results were found in your search".

I'd also like to see an option of being able to bookmark threads that you're interested in (so the thread icon is different). As opposed to actually bookmarking them on your browser which isn't as convenient. There could be a "Highlight this thread" option at the end of the last page.
