MY LOVE FOR YOU IS LIKE A TRUCK...

There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

Why do people on this forum along with others complain when someone corrects a mis-guided thread poster on what they should be doing, or what they are doing is wrong? I've seen plenty of thread entries calling people mod-wannabe's and the like, but what I can't figure out is if they are telling people the correct way to do things, and that makes the community better, why shouldn't they be doing so? I guess it comes down to that regular members don't like being told what to do by other regular members. But for me I'm just confused about the whole thing. Any ideas?

Basically Jerks don't like to be told they're Jerks. And ya, there's absolutely nothing wrong with acting like a moderator. If everybody acted like a moderator, these forums would be great. Unfortunately, only like one in a hundred do, and so most of these forums have degenerated into borderline spam. About the only good forum left is the Septagon.

Just remember, acting too much like a mod could get you into trouble.

What do you mean, in trouble with the members, or in trouble with the moderators?

Are you sure about that?

The actual moderators have said that they do appreciate it when members correct other users when they're doing something wrong. They also appreciate it when you notify them when someone breaks a rule (bnetmods@gmail.com). As prospartan7 said,

That is what I thought, but I have seen tons of posts talking about how people are wannabe mods. I tend to correct people when I know something is out of place or misinformed, but I don't think that I do it in such a way that is stuck up, but who knows. What I type can't really convey my tone of voice, but I try not to be too condesending.

There's nothing wrong with it. It's good to help members by telling them if they are in the right forum or not, etc.

Except in my case. I'll get blacklisted if I do it.(long story)

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I can understand why people whould get mad

but hey those people who are forum cops are usually good members

I remember Great Pretender and Toast being forum cops all the time and now they are mods. And people flamed them to hell. So other members proboly think they can be mods by doing the same.

Nothting wrong with it, it helps

Tru7h.

Ever notice how the ones who are flaming you for being a "Wanna-be" moderator also tend to be the ones who cause problems? This isn't true in every case, but often.

It must be that stereotypical machoism that causes people to act like that. A guy is considered manly if he acts tough and doesn't take crap from anyone. With the mask of the internet, it is easy to act tough and fulfill the stereotype, thereby "being a man". The worst part is that this stereotype is driven into people's heads time and time again, so behavioral changes are rare.

Runnnnnn!

I remember Shishka saying something like "If you can't play forum cop right then don't play it all!"

I don't want to be a "forum cop" I do enough of that in real life, but I am just saying that it seems like most of the time when someone points out that another member is in the wrong forum, or doing something against the rules, that they are immediantely responded to as "oh, I didn't know they made you a moderator!?" Just seems like they are trying to make bnet better, which is what I am striving to do.

Yes, there is something wrong with acting like a mod. Don't act like you have authority that you don't have. The rule I use is anything that could lead to a blacklisting I don't interfere with. For instance, I'll let someone know (politely!) that they have their topic in the wrong forum, but I won't tell someone to stop spamming. I'll just show a mod that.

But you guys must admit that some people only act that way because they want to be mods.

They patrol the forums just for an oppertunity to look good.

A small minority oif members do it, but i can spot them

Yes, that is true. I can name a few (I won't, but I could) that I've seen around. You can tell by the way they adress the person they're talking to. If they were really trying to help they would be nice and considerate, but instead there are all too many posts that simply say "Wrong forum. This goes in [insert forum]. Mod notified." I am continually baffled by it.

I've done that a couple of times, but I am just trying to point out that "hey, you posted this where is should have been here instead". I know when I first started posting a few things, I was curious about where exactly I was suppose to post them. I'm not trying to be a moderator, they couldn't pay me enough to deal with all the flamers around here. One guy said he was giving out "flame-proof" jackets, but I never got one. Guess it is still in the mail!

Occasionally, if I come across a brand-new member posting in the wrong forum, I'll PM him telling him where it should have gone, and that they shouldn't bee too surprised if their thread gets locked or moved.

And yes, there are people who play forum cop simply to impress the mods and Achronos. I too, could name a few of them.

Yeah, thats about what I do.

I see no point in trying to make myself look good in the hopes of being a mod. There are other members that are far more worthy than me to enter ninja-dom.

.... Achronos would probably put my name on the "will never be a mod" list just after seeing the word ninja-dom in this post anyway.
