yoo•zel- ('yoo-zhul): slang: vb.

Officium quod Fidelitas.

There’s nothing wrong with directing a misguided member, I for one would rather see people doing the right thing than mindlessly posting garbage on the forums without the least bit of knowledge where it goes.

Moderators do rely a lot on the community to help each other by answering question, acquainting new people and showing others ‘the way’. When it comes down to it, if someone is ragging on another user who is trying to be helpful, I’m going to take the side of the helpful ones.

So go ahead and help someone and if they’re telling you that you’re a wanna-be Moderator, then tell them it’s sanctioned by the Moderators themselves… Helpful is good, being an asshat is not.

There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

Thanks Yoozel, it's nice to have an "official" ruling by an actual moderator on the subject. I understand why some people have problems with other members telling them that they are doing something wrong, but it is usually that the person doing the correcting/criticizing goes about it in a wrong manner. I don't want to step into any areas that are rightfully the moderators duties, I just see myself as trying to stop some of the more obvious infractions, like a guy who kept posting about trying to "recruit people to be in a Halo machina movie with him". I simply stated that he should consider trying the classifieds because that is where the rest of the recruiting is. I guess I am just really curious if other people see it as being helpful or a hindrence. I guess it is just a matter of opinion.

Just remember, acting too much like a mod could get you into trouble.

Like that one group that did that thing...with...stuff.....

You know, "Help New Mombasa".... I can't remember the name for the life of me...

NMST? New Mombasa Strike Team I think. Not sure about the last word. I remember that. :P

I just give friendly advice. :D

But you have to remember to show respect when you're giving it. "OMG YOU NOOBZORZ POST THIS IN SEPTAGON" is unlikely to be popular with the mods.

I always like to think of myself as a "helpfull citizen"instead of a forum cop. I'm not a mod, and i don't pretend to be. But there's nothing wrong with helping a hand. And remember: just smile and wave boys!

You also need to remember to have a little faith in the community.

Ex: You see a thread about someones gerbel in New Mombasa. You tell them that it is spam. You advise them on what exactly spam is, not to do it again, and not to be surprised when they're thread gets locked. You don't necessarily have to go tell a mod to ban them for spamming. Most of these threads are made by new members. Just a kind word and a helping hand is all it takes to help them along the path to becoming a contributing member.

I remember Great Pretender and Toast being forum cops all the time and now they are mods. And people flamed them to hell.

Yeah, me too.

Personally, I have no serious ambition of become a Ninja; my temper probably isn't ideal for handling legions of idiots^H^H^H^H^H^Hmisguided users.

(Bonus points to anyone who knows what the ^H means.)

If everybody acted like a moderator, these forums would be great. . Septagon.
Are you sure about that?
How could they not? Moderators don't always just go around correcting people, they are known for contributing knowledgable and thoughtful posts as well. It's pretty much nearly impossible to flame a moderator because their arguments are near-perfect.
