Before you accuse me of advertising, I'm not.

The first group I ever made was a group about grunts.
One word. Failure.

Then I made one called Legion of Furry.
Another word. Failure.
(I spent to much time on the references and rules and stuff, and eventually just deleted it after nobody was joining.)

Then I finally had a success. The SMG Whores
I got about 50 members in the first day.
Right now I have 73 members.
It is active too and has fun caption contests.
I think the key to this success was being more active myself. In the other groups I made, I was never really active in them. This just proves that running your own group requires dedication.

OMFG, ADVERTISINING! BAN! BAN! BAN!

...seriously, though. I don't start groups. I don't care enough to even advertise it, so no one would ever join anyway.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Mathematics is having trouble finding direction. Not many of its users are active. There are a handful of people that are very active. I think it is successful, because it sticks to a specific subject. It is the only group I have ever been in since the beginning.

its difficult to post in there because you have to run charmap for just about anything worth typing. i like the C++ section though; its too late to save my grade, but perhaps not entirely.

I'm running a fairly successful group right now. My first group ever, but it's going well. 114 members at the moment.

Yea i have.

Chaos Redefined (800 members), The Roman Forum (100+), and a few others (50+). Its not always about making the groups as it is helping them grow though..

Ayone else think this thread is kinda a huge advertisment post for groups? Linkages to the homepages..

O and the there are only 3 groups over 1000... I am pretty sure. Possibly a 4th. 90% sure its 3

My group has 40 members, but unfortunately almost no activity. And most of the people in there are pretty active on other forums... I would make my group better if I weren't so lazy.

I created a group on my other acount, which reached 150 members, it has slowly started to die now though. However I am an admin in Elites Of War which is very successful.

I've only made one group: UCM.

I think it's doing rather well.

Why is everyone measuring group success by member count? I'd say a group is successful as long as it has (meaningful) activity.

I like that group too :-) and I was concerned about the notation being too difficult to type in the forums, but it has worked out ok i think.

I think any fairly large group will suffer from the fact that only 10% - 20% of its members will remain active. That's where I think Avignon is really great. It is more active than groups of hundreds of members, just because of the subject, and the members, and the fact that inactive members are booted.

Only the paranoid will survive!

One group I had was going good for awhile at 300+ members, then someone else took it (not conquored, I gve them Admin) and they had it going good. It was moderatly active all the time, now it's pretty dead. Another one was a failure. I have a new one, Projekt Alpha, which I want to get like 50 members because I'm trying a new idea.

Many groups have less than 5% activity. 20 members out of 1000 is 2 % active. Thats not much.

Something more reasonable like.. 50 members out of 1500 is 3% active..

Not many groups over 750 have more than 50 members active... And by active i mean posting at least every 2 days.

I made a group, it only has 26 people but we have about 20% real activity, and five or more members who post ocassionaly

Define success...

The Mongul Knights of Afar has been going for years now with only 10 members. But that's 10 very active members. Body Politic is a good example of a moderately sized [I approved member number 215 not so long ago] group with a lot of activity - Kudos to Reiginko for filling a niche in the market. Theme Masters on the other hand has 100+ members, but is relatively slow. That's a product of its discussion topic - people don't make themes every day... nor do they seek advice 24/7 - but we're there when we're needed.

All three groups there are successful in one way or another.
