Why is everyone measuring group success by member count? I'd say a group is successful as long as it has (meaningful) activity.

Mathematics is having trouble finding direction. Not many of its users are active. There are a handful of people that are very active. I think it is successful, because it sticks to a specific subject. It is the only group I have ever been in since the beginning.Posted by: mattski133
its difficult to post in there because you have to run charmap for just about anything worth typing. i like the C++ section though; its too late to save my grade, but perhaps not entirely.
I like that group too :-) and I was concerned about the notation being too difficult to type in the forums, but it has worked out ok i think.
I think any fairly large group will suffer from the fact that only 10% - 20% of its members will remain active. That's where I think Avignon is really great. It is more active than groups of hundreds of members, just because of the subject, and the members, and the fact that inactive members are booted.
