...can someone who's had personal experience, and who has successfully gotten a Halo DS online instruct me on how to make my own dedicated server? And is this enough to run it?

Computer: 3.4ghz dual Xeon processor with 2 GB RAM
Internet: DSL currently running on 11mbps, as according to wireless network indicator

Ya.....I'd really like to know how to make my own server (that stays open after I leave). my clan has designated me the server maker, so......I really need to know how to make a dedicated server. So if you or anyone knows, please inform me.

by the way, it said on the "message" board in the multiplayer server list that you can find the dedicated server URL here, but I cant.

Oh and I'd like to tell you that your ram is WAY more than neccesary! My computer only has 256mb....and its running xp home edition (Im moving to a 512 mb with 2000 proffesional though) Without the Nvidia Geforce card I got (not sure which one) I couldnt see the colors of peoples' armor in multiplayer...I think I added like 65 or so mb with the card

Anyway, I think you're okay with 8 times the ram I have right now (lol)

Yeah, well I want to be able to work on the computer while the server is running as well, hence the extra power. My graphics card is adequate enough to play Halo at full graphics without lag.

1. I found out that it is an Nvidia GeForce Fx 5500 Bfg tech
2. I have xp proffesional, not home edition apparently
3. I added an extra 256 mb, not just 60
4. With a dedicated server, you dont need to have Halo open and running the entire time to keep a server open; thats why you see servers with noone in them (normal servers close when host leaves). I have things to do other than keep halo open all day. lol.

first off, are you talking about a halo CE DS or a halo PC DS?
there are important diffrences in the things you can and cant do for each.

Regular Halo dedicated server for me......it's jsut so freaking confusing! I've been on this forum for like 5 days and havent found dedicated server URL!! (i didnt look hard though). There should be a sticky post about this so that others, like me, wont be confused by dedicated servers! (in the multiplayer "lobby" where it lists the servers "welcome to version 1.07, for the new dedicated server URL, go to Bungie.net/forums and click on the maw". I supppose people want to discourage everyone making there own DS so that it doesnt clog up the waiting room, but still! Well, sorry for rambling its just Im being pressured by my clan.

I was able to make one. It's more than just installing it, you have to open firewall ports etc... it's even harder to set it up so you can play on your own server.

so.........its not some quick add on? You have to install a program and keep the server running off your computer? Well........I dunno.

The machine is perfect, but the DSL connection will only give you 300 - 400 kbps upload speed, so you will only be able to support about 4- 6 players before lag gets to be awful. In addition what other bandwidth sucking applications will be running on this box. IM software and file sharing apps will make the server unless. DS's should be "dedicated" to running Halo

It's kind of complicated. To be honest with you, I got lucky.

(1) I was able to set one up in the first place
(2) I'm able to play off my own DS.

First you download the program off Microsoft's site. Upgrade both Halo and the server to 1.07. Edit the init.txt accordingly. Open up the correct ports on your firewall. That should do it.

Ty, I found out from my clan that somone got the program so I'm off the hook. But again out of curiosity, I went to microsoft.com and found out how to make one (although it looks complicated, its just basic programming it seems.......luckily I took a class on how to program simple games and basic commands).
