The main thing about the motion tracker in this game that I don't like is that the enemies don't show up as a solid red dot. They are a faded red and too many enemies clumped together hides their numbers. In Later games enemies are a solid red dot and their dots don't blend together into one mass. It is easier to determine the true number of enemies around the corner.

That's not an issue with the red dots, that's an issue with the trackers' HUGE range, with in my experience has made it far more useful.

And about speakers and listening to the flood around the corner... Well excuse me for not having a $3,000 7 point surround sound stereo system turned to maximum volume on a 70inch LED TV in ultra high definition.

I play on a 17 inch flat screen standard definition TV, with no supplementary speakers so I only hear the game coming from two small ports on my TV. And I don't turn the volume too high because I have a small house with paper thin walls and I don't want to disturb anybody.

And I spent my first 7 or so years with the game on a cheap, tiny CRT in a room adjacent to and without walls between it and our main TV room, meaning I had to keep my volume reasonably low too.
Also, like I mentioned, the game has harsh stereo splitting (as does the console; there are only 2 audio channels); if you only have two distinct sound outputs, that should help you play more effectively.

If you for some reason have to keep it so low that you just plain can't hear the games' sounds, you should probably get yourself a pair of headphones (which will also enhance the stereo splitting). This isn't the fault of the game.

I have nothing specifically to add to this, except to say that this was very well-put, especially the conclusion.

Halo: CE, in all of its majesty, perfect, unpresidented gameplay, you dare insult it?!

I am offended by the idea!

This game was prefect. Nothing will ever alter that. I am a Veteran Halo player of 7+ years, reaching to 8. I will not be afraid to speak strongly on one of the best games in history.

If you are a true Halo veteran, you would have been with halo from the start. Not just buying Halo Reach or Halo 3, downloading Halo:CE, then saying it sucks because it was made years ago.

Veteran Halo player my ass!
It was the very first Halo. Of course it had multiple flaws but it was still very good at the time!

Exactly. Halo CE came out way back in 2001 and it was what Halo Reach is for us currently.

The big mass thing makes sense because of the range of the motion tracker. When several enemies are close together, it makes a big red blob.

And about speakers and listening to the flood around the corner... Well excuse me for not having a $3,000 7 point surround sound stereo system turned to maximum volume on a 70inch LED TV in ultra high definition. You're excused. Does anybody here have one of those?

Not too sure why you're running around corners as close as you can to the wall when it's obvious you should have learned not to by now. You have guns and grenades for a reason.

Those are my major complaints.Derp.

I'm talking about Halo CE not Reach.

Since I've posted here I've learned to deal with these problems. I just hate in games where you will not have a chance of succeeding until you have played the same level multiple times and memorized the spawn points of all the enemies.

I liked the campaign of Gears of War 1 and 2 better. I had more fun with them and they had more interesting level design.

  • 12.23.2010 1:59 AM PDT

There's your solution - go play Gears of War.

Really, I'm not sure how you had these problems. 8 years ago, when I was 12, I didn't.

  • 12.23.2010 11:32 AM PDT

agreed

  • 12.23.2010 3:20 PM PDT

You wouldn't be saying that 10 years ago.
Halo 1 was made quite a while ago.
Bungie have learned from their mistakes
you have to respect that.

@lord of dahorde i agree completly

WAR IS INFINITE PEOPLE TO FIGHT THEM ARE NOT

quit pissing your pants because the first game of its kind was a tiny bit bad thats what first means its new type of game. they learned from thier mistakes and fixed them in the newer ones. learn to appreciate the game for the story and not be mad cause it was a little unrealistic during parts of it. my point being the good of the game outways the bad of it. and to be happy that it wasnt worse than getting lost and maybe having a bad motion sensor or the graphics being a little cruddy

Too many times I find myself wandering around an endless construct of tunnels and hallways with no indication as to where I'm supposed to go. Everything looks the same and far too many areas are just copied and pasted from previous sections in the campaign.

I'm only going to take you seriously here if you're talking about 343GS (at which point I suspect Bungie WANTS you to get lost).

If you got lost on AotCR or TB, I have zero sympathy.

And the motion tracker sucks too. I'm a veteran Halo player and I look at my motion tracker constantly but in this game too many times I find that even when I watch my motion tracker enemies still find a way behind me.
I can't take you seriously here at all. The motion tracker in HCE has far greater range and as much if not more sensitivity than the ones in the other titles. AND it doesn't dissapear when you zoom in.

If you get flanked, it's usually because an enemy AI executed a fast flanking maneuvre when you weren't paying attention, and that's something I LOVE about the game; the AI are actually aggressive and proactive in killing you.

I also might note that HCE is a lot more liberal with sound notification of events and stereo splitting than the other games. Even without a motion tracker, you could, with some effort, manage to pseudo-motion track the entities in a small vicinity.

And the melee distance of the flood is TOO FAR. I see flood well over ten feet away still able to melee me. I got good at dodging flood attacks in 3 but this game is just broken in this department.
The hit range is a little oversized, but it's not THAT bad. Also, it makes sense from a gameplay standpoint. The flood would be boring to fight if they had short melees in this game.

The only way I can get through this game is to BABY. STEP. THE. WHOLE. WAY. That is not fun. I hate games that force you to baby. step. the. entire. campaign. or. else. you. will. die. as. soon. as. you. step. out. of. the. designed. path.
Really? The other Halo games are the ones where I get bogged down in lethargic duck-shoot-repeat hell. One of my favorite things about Halo 1 is that it allows (and encourages, very strongly in some areas such as T&R's belly of the beast or SC's opening) aggression and dynamic gameplay without being too easy.

Actually, in a nutshell, that's probably half of what keeps me playing.

But I know all of you will say DUDE YOU SUCK! YOU'RE NOT A TRUE HALO FAN UNLESS YOU FIND NO FAULT AT ALL IN THE ORIGINAL GAME! THE ORIGINAL IS PERRRRRRRFECT! THE SEQUELS SUCK EVEN THOUGH WE KEEP PLAYING THEM DURRRRRRRRRR!
No. But I do think that you're either unnacclimated or tone deaf to the game, and are, at least in some cases, substituting in ridiculous arguments to try and explain your very real and probably reasonable discontent because you're having trouble realizing and articulating the actual problems you have with the game.

Tru7h.

I doubt any game could ever be perfect for everybody.
The maddening part of Halo is the serious level recycling that goes on from CE to REACH. Pretty much you spend the first half the game getting to somewhere and then the second half going back over what is familiar territory.

A little devil's advocate would suggest that recycling levels allowed Bungie to allocate more time and energy into other aspects that make CE so dear to us.
That's the way I choose to view it anyway.

I currently am working on Halo Wars achievements. 4 to go.
I currently am working on Halo 2 achievements.
I currently have all Halo 3 achievements.
I currently have all Halo 3:ODST achievements.
I currently have all Halo: Reach achievements.

Actually, you don't have to do that. When I first played CE's campaign, I played it all the way through in one go with my best friend. I was in fifth or sixth grade, was twelve or so at the time. We didn't have any of these problems.

This is funny. All these kids complaining about a game that requires actual effort to beat.

  • 12.30.2010 10:13 AM PDT

Remember Reach

I agree. Only the true halo fan would of started when it first came out. So what if the visuals wasent so good, it was extreamly fun to play and was challenging. It will always be great.

This was the peak of the mountain out of the halo campaign, and if you get lost, you need to work on your navigation skills. I got lost once, and it was because I was terrified of being eaten by the flood and running like hell.

No hand holding back in the day. You got your blam kicked and then thought it out. Tried again, got your blam kicked, then tried something else. Ah. That was a time.

  • 12.30.2010 5:35 PM PDT

Odd that the closest thing similar to that right now is Gears of War....
