Too many times I find myself wandering around an endless construct of tunnels and hallways with no indication as to where I'm supposed to go. Everything looks the same and far too many areas are just copied and pasted from previous sections in the campaign.

I'm only going to take you seriously here if you're talking about 343GS (at which point I suspect Bungie WANTS you to get lost).

If you got lost on AotCR or TB, I have zero sympathy.

And the motion tracker sucks too. I'm a veteran Halo player and I look at my motion tracker constantly but in this game too many times I find that even when I watch my motion tracker enemies still find a way behind me.
I can't take you seriously here at all. The motion tracker in HCE has far greater range and as much if not more sensitivity than the ones in the other titles. AND it doesn't dissapear when you zoom in.

If you get flanked, it's usually because an enemy AI executed a fast flanking maneuvre when you weren't paying attention, and that's something I LOVE about the game; the AI are actually aggressive and proactive in killing you.

I also might note that HCE is a lot more liberal with sound notification of events and stereo splitting than the other games. Even without a motion tracker, you could, with some effort, manage to pseudo-motion track the entities in a small vicinity.

And the melee distance of the flood is TOO FAR. I see flood well over ten feet away still able to melee me. I got good at dodging flood attacks in 3 but this game is just broken in this department.
The hit range is a little oversized, but it's not THAT bad. Also, it makes sense from a gameplay standpoint. The flood would be boring to fight if they had short melees in this game.

The only way I can get through this game is to BABY. STEP. THE. WHOLE. WAY. That is not fun. I hate games that force you to baby. step. the. entire. campaign. or. else. you. will. die. as. soon. as. you. step. out. of. the. designed. path.
Really? The other Halo games are the ones where I get bogged down in lethargic duck-shoot-repeat hell. One of my favorite things about Halo 1 is that it allows (and encourages, very strongly in some areas such as T&R's belly of the beast or SC's opening) aggression and dynamic gameplay without being too easy.

Actually, in a nutshell, that's probably half of what keeps me playing.

But I know all of you will say DUDE YOU SUCK! YOU'RE NOT A TRUE HALO FAN UNLESS YOU FIND NO FAULT AT ALL IN THE ORIGINAL GAME! THE ORIGINAL IS PERRRRRRRFECT! THE SEQUELS SUCK EVEN THOUGH WE KEEP PLAYING THEM DURRRRRRRRRR!
No. But I do think that you're either unnacclimated or tone deaf to the game, and are, at least in some cases, substituting in ridiculous arguments to try and explain your very real and probably reasonable discontent because you're having trouble realizing and articulating the actual problems you have with the game.

Your an idiot. If you truely were a Halo veteran, then I guess you would have played Halo CE first and would understand the problems or limitations the game had compared to the sequels.

The game worked perfectly fine for me. I was able to beat levels on Legendary without dying, so most of those problems are you, not the game.

Also this!

SOUTH SPARTANS - Close Quarters

Ready to -blam!- you up with my bare hands!

(Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brasil)

You're totally right about the repetitive scenario, this gets clear when you arrive at "The Library", that stage is just a pain in the -blam!- ass!

But, about the motion track, that wasn't to much of a problem, in fact, I really never got any issue with that.

The first game is not perfect, as a matter of fact, none of them are, but that's not enough reasons to say that the campaing sucks.

Halo Combat Evolved is, in my oppinion, the best Halo game, even though it has its issues.

Your resident explosives and heavy ordinance expert, at your service.

eh, yeah there were a few copy paste issues within the campaign, but it was so action packed I never noticed it until I started thinking about it. And the Motion tracker worked fine, if a huge mass of enemies are moving towards you in a close group at more or less the same speed, a motion tracker will pick that up as one mass. I thought it was kind of fun, sort of like the lottery. Would it be just a ton of infection forms that I can kill with a bullet or two, or will it be a combo of infection forms, carriers, and heavily armed combat forms?

Also, you need to use your ears in CE, the different flood forms have distinct sounds, and the Covenant have different sounding footfalls while walking. You can also tell what direction they are in, and generally how far away they are. Thats why I liked CE, it was an involved experience, not just a bunch of eye candy. That being said I throughly enjoy the other Halo games (aside from ODST and Reach, but thats my preference)

Safe haves is lame...

Awesome Reach. <- Funniest YouTube vid EVER, some swearing.

RESPECT THE FORKLIFT!!!

It's the first game. There are going to be mistakes, and that's why the sequel is there. To fix the problems. And I don't see why you're complaining. Bungie Dosen't even care about halo 3 anymore, let alone the first. But yeah there are a few bugs. Just play Reach or somthing.

What the hell is a signature?

Well, it was made in 2001. Video game development was pretty new back then.

This was the first ever Halo game there is obviously going to be a lot of flaws but bear in mind that this was 10 years ago

The main thing about the motion tracker in this game that I don't like is that the enemies don't show up as a solid red dot. They are a faded red and too many enemies clumped together hides their numbers. In Later games enemies are a solid red dot and their dots don't blend together into one mass. It is easier to determine the true number of enemies around the corner.

And about speakers and listening to the flood around the corner... Well excuse me for not having a $3,000 7 point surround sound stereo system turned to maximum volume on a 70inch LED TV in ultra high definition.

I play on a 17 inch flat screen standard definition TV, with no supplementary speakers so I only hear the game coming from two small ports on my TV. And I don't turn the volume too high because I have a small house with paper thin walls and I don't want to disturb anybody.

Those are my major complaints.

I play on a 12 inch monitor with $10 headphones... and I find HCE to top all the other games.

Overall HCE had many flaws. There were some annoying glitches, horrible areas, and yes.. The flood could get you from waaaay over there in that corner...

But aside from that, the game is beautiful. H2 and H3 campaign never stood a chance against HCE. Reach's campaign is better, but still not up to par with HCE.

And I agree with the 2nd poster 100%... I'm not saying you suck.. I'm saying that you dont realize what the actual problem your having is. Perhaps its just not the game for you.. Dont play it then, go have your H3 fun. I'm goin to go through this fancy sliding door and take down an Elite general with my assault rifle, then grab that banshee and wreck AOTCR. See you starside.

OP FTW.
Never put out the format for a best seller. Boring. Just...just didn't bring anything to the table. Solid call. Excellent descriptions. Couldn't possibly agree more. What a piece of crap.

I'll assume that you're talking about the OP when you mention a piece of crap.

Otherwise, go jerk-off to pre-teens in the CoD lobby.

well since most of us are roasting him anyways . . .
I respect his opinion of thinking that the campaign sucks with his arguements. What i dissagree strongly is that you should not call yourself a Halo Veteran unless you master things such as the motion tracker or the maps that look the same.

My brother and I are truly Halo Veterans because we find new glitches 10 years later and we know exactly what part of the map we are on, whats going to happen next. The Library is a pain in the ass, but you definitly dont have to baby step your way through that. As for the motion tracker, be better. I hardly ever even look at my motion tracker. It does help when I do look, but for the most part, if you have a problem with that, you are not a halo veteran.
This is coming from someone who has beaten the game on Legendary multiple times, solo and on coop.

Your beaf with the game is valid, but dont call yourself a Halo Veteran and complain about stuff like that.

  • 02.05.2011 11:19 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Sounds like you're just bad at it.

no one uses compasses anymore ;)

as for the campaign sucking you couldnt be further from the truth. after all these years halo;ce is the only halo i go back and play.

it is more difficult than the others(the library on legendary is impossible) but the difficulty only adds to the fun. difficulty seems to be a lost art in todays video games. nowadays difficulty falls to the wayside in exchange for graphics and mainstream appeal. i have shelfs of old Sega and Nintendo games that are left unbeaten.

if the remastered halo actually does come out its a definite buy for me.

  • 02.06.2011 9:13 AM PDT

Halo CE is the best. None of them suck like the OP suggests everyone would say, but they aren't as good at capturing the mysterious atmosphere and sheer chaos during combat between marines/covenant/sentinels/flood.

One thing to understand about the motion detector in halo 1 is that is has a much larger range than the motion detectors in later Halo games? Does that make it suck? No, because at the time you had nothing to compare it to anyway. Being able to hide numbers in clumps of enemies is good, you aren't supposed to know what's around every corner until you get there.

I can understand the argument of similar looking spaces in the campaign, but for me a Halo game is not judged on the first playthrough when you're trying to figure out how to get from point A to point B. It's judged on the 100th playthrough when you've done everything so many times yet the game is still amazingly fun. No Halo game after the first one had the dynamics and replayability of Combat Evolved.

Dude. your. problem. is. your. coming. from. later. games. expecting. everything. to. be. familiar. ITS. NOT. THE. SAME.

Halo veteran my ass. The CE campaign beats the hell outta the others. Biggest reason why is the enemies dont move like f**kin crack addicts.

Oh,and the motion tracker works best if your not running backwards into new rooms. I honestly don't understand your issue here.

To be honest, you need to just put the game down and never touch it again. Your not gonna experience Halo CE the way it was meant to.

It's true that the flood melee distance is WAY too far. There are a few other minor flaws, but over all, the CE campaign pwns. It's the best part of Halo.
