ok so it has been a little while since i have played reach but i remember thinking throughout campaign that so many of the deaths were preventable. I know they had to basically die to keep the cannon but does anyone else like to think how brilliant things could have been with a couple extra spartans during the original halo saga?

Not really. One of the things the trilogy does so well is make you feel alone.

Besides, implementation of "special" characters in gameplay other than the user gets awkward really quickly since the necessary character continuity requires weirdness. You either wind up turning a mission into what's effectively an escort mission, or you wind up with extremely contrived gameplay mechanic ie ally invulnerability (many of such mechanics force even more contrived compensation, ie making those invulnerable allies fight really unnaggressively).
