Think about it, if humanity didnt have like an economy, they would be able to make: more spartan IIs, build more NOVA bombs and basically more of evreything which would give them a good chance at fighting the covenant. Wouldnt they have gone past the stage of money in order to survive? i can just imagine someone building a super weapon that can destroy the covenant and the flood in a one er. but the unsc is a couple dollars short.-_-

Because Muslims surgically implant organic bombs in their testicles, which in turn will be injected into women during sex, which will grow into BABY BOMBS!

Ummmm then what motivation would people have to do anything at all? Money gives people a reason to do stuff.

You can't just get resources out of nowhere. The UNSC has a limited amount of workhours and a limited amount of raw materials to work with, not to mention that the workforce is divided among professions.

Pretty much this. It's human nature to be greedy and want. It's never going to change.

Yep. The UNSC is not some magical post scarcity economy.

Reinforce that left flank! It's being over run!

Yes this is true, but also cause it's how you look at the history of the formation of the UNSC. It became a major force after the Interplanetary War adgainst the socialist Koslovics faction and the fascist Frieden orgaization which all basicly fought for control of the Sol System in 2160.
It's not like Star Treck we're human kind was blasted into the stone age during WWIII and then encountered a alien race that helped them in the path of that the Earth Fred took to what in was in that series we're they didn't require money
Even Palaptine's Empire in the Star Wars franchise required the use of money. The Death Star took Two decades to build. Trillions of credits. Millions of droids and slave labor, and the Kidnapping of leading engineers and scientist to construct.
I may have gotten away from what i was trying to say, but all in all. people are greedy and everyone wants their cut. So who ever is mining the resources for the UNSC war machine wants something to say he's working hard for something, so might as well pay the guy for the hard work he is putting in.

"We live as if we will never die, and we will die as if we had never lived."

I have always thought that having a roadblock such as a monetary system in the face of utter oblivion as being nonsensical. In the end it is either be motivated or burn under the belly of a Covenant Cruiser.

Surely the reality of certain inescapable death would spur people into contributing without having to demand a wage. Are we so materialistic, truly?

I suppose the problem with having no monetary system it would mean that someone somewhere would have to be exploited. Badly.

Because unlike Star Trek, the Halo universe doesn't have replicators that can make anything you want.

The thing is, many people were unhappy with the UNSC and were on the verge of civil unrest. The UNSC censored the information to make themselves look better and the covenant look like a small threat so that civilians stayed loyal and confident.

People didn't quite see it that way early-ish in the war; if people were angry with the UNSC they'd join the Insurgency and hide away where the Covenant would never find them and where they could live a happy life.

Of course later in the war when it was more common knowledge that the Covenant didn't take prisoners / make partners things got more desperate and realistic.

That's not how people think, people would still need to work to put food on the table, they couldn't just giveaway free food. If they broke down their economy, everything eould off fallen apart.

Why though? Nature does not charge for using nutrients in the soil.

doctors... Go do your thing without pay or were all going to die.
soldiers... your going to work or everyone is dead
factory workers.... your going to work or the covy is going to knock on your door.
polititions..... you can help the factory workers or were put you on the front lines...

then you show them the remains of a burnt out planet glassed bv the covy XD

life or death and u would do whatever to survive.

Money is just one of those things you need now and in the future.

Yes, but once nature starts growing continents worth of corn or grain or something, it will take human work to get the food. We don't eat the nutrients in the soil...

The UNSC was the only defence humanity had.

BLACKMAIL+UNSC=COMMUNISM

And that's how the UNSC would of had won easily.

Not only that, but also the nutriens will become depleted. It takes man power to put more back ino the soil.

That was not to be taken literally. It is the nutrients that make the crops grow. Anyway, in the end, boiling down to people wanting a wage to transport and process these goods. Money as the sole motivator behind doing this. What was being said there is that money only comes into play when Human interaction is needed.

This is arguing Human Nature. Why is it Human Nature? Why should it continue to be so? Anyway, for this situation, I think that the will to live and fear of death would be a stronger motivator than materialism. Imagine yourself in that situation. Seeing Human Fleets obliterated and entire colonies in flames. Would you seriously make a big fuss if you were to suddenly work for the survival of Humanity rather than a wage?

Nobody thinks like that. Wars don't seem real to most people until their house blows up. I mean, if the President said "do your job for no pay or the terrorists will win.", would you believe him?
