I would have to say cable. I have cable and my buddy has dsl. I run about 30 to 60 pings less, so if you can afford it go cable.

Cable is faster, and if you yell loud enough, your DSL provider will admit that.
I have cable. Cable is better. Not superior, but faster.

hmm.. where do you live (general area, like a major city)? That would help.

That all depends on what is available in your area, what provider you choose, and what plan you pick. I spend about $60.00 a month for the fastest comcast can give me. My buddy spends around 30.00 to 40.00 a month for his dsl.

Hope that helps.

depends....
DSL<cable<FIOS DSL
old fasion DSL is worse than cable, but if you get the new upgraded, fiber optic DSL connection, you can get speeds of 150% faster than cable...

Don't drink to excess– You might shoot at tax-collectors... and miss

Computer: Power Mac G5 CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (2.2) Number Of CPUs: 2 CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB Memory: 1.25 GB Bus Speed: 900 MHz

ATi Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
Display Type: LCD Resolution: 1680 x 1050 Depth: 32-bit Color

I considered switching to cable from dsl. The down stream was faster, but the upstream on the cable was less than what I was getting from dsl, and both are important for a server.

You want the truth? cable<DSL

Most cable connections are somewhat shared among other cable users in your neighborhood. If other people are using their connection the same time you are, you might get some decrease in speeds.

DSL, on the other hand, is a dedicated connection. This means your connection is YOURS, and shouldn't be affected by other people's connections.

So, do you wan't faster peak speed, say around 2 a.m. (cable), or a more stable speed (DSL)?

If you want a clan server it's better to rent one unless you got an extra beast(2+GB mem, Money processor) laying around your house. The cheapest I found was $2/slot/month which is $24/month for a 12 person server.

If your going to run one from your house you better get the best Cable connection available. The rental companies have T1/T3 connections and those are a little laggy at times.

I wanted to ask you guys what exactly is ping? I have heard about this before and I do not know the exact definition. I am not very computer literate so please be gentle with me lol.

Thanks a lot.

Cable has the potential to be 100 to 200 times faster than DSL. Think about it. A cable connection has to supply your tv with streaming movies, sounds, and has to send back and forth information about what channel you changed to. Thats a couple hundred megabits per second. Once they get that electric wire internet stuff though, that will be faster. Can't really limit your electricity can they?

hmm yea, since I got Halo PC I've had a Lite Cable connection offered by Rogers and I'm pretty happy with my pings, though it did used to be worse but Rogers just a month ago upgraded my connection and game me a digital modem :), until my friend finally switched to Rogers (and got their Extreme connection :( ) he had crappy AOL. I swear that service provider was a piece of BLAM. Honestly... he was lucky if he could stay online for 10 minutes without it logging him off. Though I guess his real problem was his network setup. Trying to beam a internet signal from a basement to 2 top floor computers is a problem waiting to happen.

Packet Internet Groper. A utility that forwards data packets to check the quality of a link or verify the connection of a machine to the Internet.

In other words PInG is the amount of lime it takes for a signal to get to and from a destination.

Like submarines when the PING each other to fid distance and vector
