Can you even get a aftermarket card for a 2400? I have a 4600 and can upgrade more than I expected that I could. I have a ATI Radeon 9600 256mb, 1gb of ram and it made a hell of a difference. I'm not sure the 2400's can be upgraded much but good luck and do your homework.

I've heard that 2400's didn't have an AGP slot, but I don't know for sure. Look inside your case, and try to find a black slot that looks similar to a PCI slot, but is placed a bit further from the "back" of the case. If so, you have an AGP slot.

Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

First thing's first: you don't have an AGP slot, so you are limited in your options.
Here is your best bet for a graphics card that is a PCI card.
It is the best one I could find for gaming and such. I did find a 5700LE, but the 5500 here has better specs and performance.
If I find a radeon 9800 pci card(I remember seeing one somewhere), I will post a link here.

I currently have an Nvidia GeForce fx 5500 card. (256 mb ram) I was just wondering wether it would be worth it to upgrade to a 6600. I am moving to some sort of dell (512 mb ram?) and was wondering wether it would play games like halo, world of warcraft, guild wars, call of duty, and counterstike. My current computer is a newer model, but its running xp with 256 mb ram + video card. Halo runs fine, but guild wars loads really slowly and counterstrike is laggy. So anyway, if anyone thinks it would work, let me know.

Dude I used to have the same exact card Geforce fx 5500. I will never have a Nvidia card again i really dont like them. I suggest getting a Radeon card I found them to be more reliable than Nvidia, Right now I got a Radeon X 850XT 256mb video card and 3 gigs of ram. The Video card is the best one I have seen so far and I hanent had one problem with it yet. Although it does cost about 200 dollars now i think It is well worth it, I can run Halo with the graphics turned all the way up along with Battleifeld 2, call of duty 2 and Doom 3.

dude the 7800GTX>all

I don't have one, but it's true.
If you are on a budget, then get a 6600GT. I'ts one of the best cards out there, and it doesn't cost as much as the higher end ones. It will run any game you throw at it with no problems.
Also, none of the Radeon cards have SM3.0 right now. Only the Nvidia 6 series and above have it right now.

Also, when you move to the Dell, make sure that it has an AGP slot. Otherwise you are in the same boat as the topic starter.

Well the reason I just said i would choose Radeon over Nvidia is just because I have had bad experiences with Nvidia, not saying they arned better.

Don't the 1k ATi cards have PS3 support? I have an x800xl, which works like a dream. Much better than a 5500 (my old card). a 6600gt is probably the best cost/performance ratio, with an x800xl coming in close second. The x800 costs more, but will outperform most cards out there. With over clocking, you can get the performance of an x850.

Indeed, as long as you get it for the correct slot - you need an AGP slot or a PCI-Express slot - it's easily the best price to performance ratio for a mid-range card.

To the guy who started this thread - the FX5500 is about the best you'll get if you just have PCI. It won't be great, but it will be better than integrated.

A graphics card? It's a component in a pc that calculates the image displayed onscreen - not only does it draw geometry and apply textures and other effects, but it will then convert this environment into a 2D image by assigning every pixel a specific color - thus what you see on-screen. Honestly, it has become one of the more expensive and critical components in a pc today. Want something to blow your mind? The 7800GTX 512 can calculate 200 gigaflops, while a standard CPU may be able to calculate in the range of several gigaflops. This means? It means a graphics card is by far the most powerful component in a modern pc...

i dont think you can upgrade a 2400 because it has an intergrated graphics card. i have a very cheap nvidia card (geforce fx 5750 pcx pci express or something) and it runs halo like a dream. occasionly it goes fuzzy for a couple of seconds but other than that it is brilliant. it runs serious sam 2 chronicles of riddick and all my other games very well. i personlly think nvidia is better than ati because my old computer had an ati and it was rubbish, the graphics were fuzzy and it had a low frame rate and it kept freezing for 5 seconds or so, also this was a high end card. so i prefer nvidia to ati.

He can upgrade it, but only with a PCI card.
The 5500 I showed you is better than the 5700LE.

i think i have a pci card, it runs halo very well. the reason i think its pci is because it says its pci express (could someone tell me what that is as well) my graphics card is called nvidia geforce pcx 5750 pci express

Your video card won't work for him though. It is totally different from the 5700LE, which I reiterate is worse than the 5500.
You video card is a PCI Express. He only has a PCI slot.
PCI Express slots are a new technology, which his computer doesn't have.

EDIT: Here is what PCI Express is.

I have 2 choices:

1) take the computer my dad had in his office (2003/2004 dell with 512 mb ram, I assume at least 2.4 Ghz proccessor, windows 2000 proffesional, hard drive is 160 gb....I think). Although its far from........elite.......I figure it will suffice for general gaming. I plan to buy an xbox 360 or ps3, so my computer will be used for secondary gaming (Halo, world of warcraft, guild wars, counterstrike). I currently have the 5500 video card....and I've determined that Ill get a 6600 (I think), which means Ill have at least 768mb ram.

2) I buy a new computer (which will run me around 800 dollars with video card and stuff; compared to the max 200$ for video card in option 1 above). If I do this, Ill buy a pc with 1gb ram, and maybe an athlon proccessor( video card will add ram and Ill buy ram cards...maybe).

Im not the type to play the most challenging (graphics wise) games like doom 3, fear etc., but middle/high games like world of warcraft. If I buy a new computer and a new console, it will run me more than $1200, but If I stay with an older computer, I might not be able to play the newest games....I failed to explain my prediciment correctly above........ I think I'll ask people at best buy and compusa for their opinions too.
