My psychology class was doing a team experiment in cognition today. In each pair, one person was the tester and the other the test subject. There were ten objects total that were to be presented to the test subject visually for three seconds at a time. Then the object would be removed by the tester from their sight. They would then describe every detail of the object to the tester that they can remember.

My partner sat across from me. My hand was behind my back, open, when the teacher gave me the object I was to show him. It was an ink bottle - but I mistook it for a really weird door knob. I remember exclaiming, "Ooh!" out loud once I felt its shape. For some reason, I was fascinated with it.

To explain, I am typically a very visual person. I rarely use my sense of touch when dealing with things - I'm almost always using the visual or audio senses. But this time, since I was given an object that I found so intriguing which I was only able to explore at first (so my partner couldn't see it) with my sense of touch I had a form of an epiphany.

For the rest of the day I've been touching things, concentrating totally on my tactile senses. Many humans rely totally on our eyesight. Spend a while just feeling around your desk and concentrate totally on the tactile sense.

It really is fascinating. It's like a new facet, a new dimension of beauty has been added to my explorable world.

Try touching chalk for an extended period of time.

The fact that you thought it was a doorknob didn't play hell with your phobia?

Yeah, I've done things like that. I usually enjoy wandering around my house at night trying to judge where I'm going because it lets me see how dependant I am on eyesight. All the subtle differences in texture become waypoints.

Intrestingly enough, when I actually close my eyes in the dark I am able to navigate much easier. I guess they're right when they talk about 'heightened senses.'

No, I didn't associate it. It's not really a fear of door knobs, but a fear of things that LOTS of people touch every day. A door knob the teacher hands me certainly isn't something that's used frequently.

Besides, it didn't feel dirty. It was plastic, smooth, and clean.

Anyway. I'm going to bed.

I'll be sure to spend some time feeling the texture of my sheets, among other things.

Alright I don't have the huevos to say what I was going to, but on a related note. Obbi you could use that as a pick up line. "Can I practice my tactile sensory on you?"

Guys could use that. It's kind like asking, "Can I grab your boobs?" Except if you ask the right person, they won't understand.

I love all 5 of my senses, the sight of Halo 2, the sound of Mark Lanegan's voice, the smell of freshly cut grass, the taste of seared Diver Scallops with Hudson Valley Foi Gras and Wild Forrest Mushrooms, and the gentle caress of a Woman.

We are truely blessed.

...Hudson Valley Foi Gras...

what exactly is Foi Gras? i see it used on Iron Chef all the time (i can't seem to change the channel when it's on), but i still don't know what it is. and a few weeks ago there was this big hubbub about it on the news. but i didn't see enough of the report to figure it out.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Touch is an..... touchy subject (I truely am sorry for that one).

I believe we have the sense of touch to heighten awareness, then through that, increase knowledge. You can learn so much more about something by touching it... you learn the feel of it. If it feels good, you can "become one with it..." Musical instruments are a good example of this. Say you have two violins... same color, same sound. But after playing both, for some reason, you like one more than the other. Perhaps someone made it using the same kind of wood people used way back when violins first started to be made. And the other was made with cheaper wood. Again, they both look the same, and both sound the same... so aesthetic and musical quality of the violins are equal, thus shouldn't really make a difference, right? But the one still feels better than the other... Playing that one may cause the player to hear the music better.... make the player more able to move with the music.

The same can go for furniture. Imagine if a piece of metal furniture looked exactly like wood (from small distance, such as if you were sitting in it). Some people would still enjoy real wooden furniture better.... Perhaps they think wood is more "friendly" and "warm" to the touch... more comforting.

Perhaps this is "why" s.ex is so pleasant? You actually get to feel your partner, rather than just look at him/her.

I should resist the temptation, but I'll be stupid here.
Seriously, if you ever take LSD, touch everything, it feels really cool. Sometimes it's like a thin coating of water on everything... sometimes it's indescribably awsome feeling. But yeah, don't do drugs.

It takes another one to know the second one.

I takes one to know that one is that which it is not one where ever there are not
ones who are not there.
