I do not fear death, in view of the fact that I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it. ~ Mark Twain

And the treatment of animals is another great factor. We aren't simply following instinct and such like by killing them and eating them to sustain ourselves. No we are doing it out of greed and lust. We want to have chicken burgers and double bacon, when it's killing us. It's killing the American nation, due to your own greed, and best of all, you are all so blinded with greed that you refuse to admit how evil it is.
Yes, because the moral implications of using animals incapable of meta-cognition as a source for sustenance is so much more pertinent than the famine that kills millions in Sub-Saharan Africa. As such, we are a barbaric race for attempting to boost the food reserves on this planet to feed these people, when we could let them die in order to satisfy the issues of morally ambiguous dilemmas for people like you.
You should know the implications of increasing crop yields to account for the fall in Animal produce. The amount of fertiliser that is used on crops is seriously damaging hydrological ecosystems. If you really want Humanity to fully subsidise meat and animal derivatives with crop then you had better be prepared for the major consequences in these places. Fertilisers contaminate rivers and lakes, causing rampant algae which causes de-oxygenation of the water killing fish and other marine life. (Almost half of the Lakes in the world are suffering from this).
Expansion of farms (Which have blanketed vast areas of countryside already, destroying the natural habitats of animals) would only contribute to this damage even more. How many field dwelling animals are killed when a combine harvester reaps the fields? Then you have got soil degradation and erosion which leaves cultivated areas dead heaps for decades. Pesticides getting onto water streams...self explanatory.
Crop only foodstuffs will also not give you the necessary nutrients such as iron and B12 that you need. You will have to rely on pills or processed goods. That means factories, chemicals; pollution.
When you look at these indirect effects is it any much different from harvesting animal produce? People eat meat probably so long as they do not see it alive first. Somebody said Ignorance is bliss earlier. The same applies to you. You are ignorant of the damage being done to the environment from crops.
You should note that their are mountains of food reserves from EU farmers, that could easily feed all the Africans. The reason they don't, is because distribution is complicated, but mainly because this will completely de-stabilise the economies of third world countries, crushing any chance of becoming a developed country, "Feed a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach him to fish, eats for a lifetime". So no, you are completely misinformed here.
Yes, you can obtain all the necessary nutrition from non-meat food sources, that is evident as there is existence of vegetarians.
To the topic of over cultivation. I understand that this is also a problem, but it's a problem which can be managed, something not apparent with killing animals. And yet again, a vegetarian basically makes the choice, "Plants or animals" and killing a plant is a lot better (considering it isn't feeling) than killing an animal, which feels the same pain and the same pain you do, but they will experience worse than you'll ever have to.
