I do not fear death, in view of the fact that I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it. ~ Mark Twain

What about a newbord child? I'm fairly certain they have no degree of metacognition, does that make it okay to kill them purple because of that?

There's no reason for us to kill newborn childs, as it's not in our nature to be cannibals.

It's not in our nature to eat meat (proven various times throughout this thread).

Because he's the blanket this bed deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not our blanket. He's a silent quilt. A watchful comforter. A Dark Linen.

My cat kills and eats squirrels, birds and rabbits. But you probably wouldn't mind if he does it.

I wouldn't say I'd like it, but he's probably following insticts. He doesn't know any better.
Sure he does. He tortures them. He does it for fun, he has his own reasons for it. Of course he knows better.

And he's told you this himself?

Isn't a cat a thinking, feeling individual? Can't it get enjoyment from following its instincts and tracking, capturing and killing prey? Or should it just want to cuddle and purr?

My dogs shake their toys the same way that they would shake a rabbit or a squirrel (in order to break its neck). I think that I know them well enough to understand that they are "having fun" when they shake either a toy or a prey animal.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

Also, you're not empathizing with animals. You're being judgmental and snooty. you're just using this as an excuse to prove to the world how great and noble you are. This is an ego trip, that only you and those who are on the same type of ego trip could justify and applaud. You take narcissism and turn it into an art form. You lack the perspicacity to see that about yourself however, so I'm sure I'm in for another "shut up you murder" reply from you.

As is not in our nature to eat other creatures.
If it's not in our "nature" to eat animals then there must be a certain point in history in which humans started going against their "nature?" And I'm sure you can point this out for me, of course?

Around the period of Socrates, as stated by his notes on humanity.

Yeah except they've all been subject to counter arguments and the non meat eaters fall silent for each one. I'm still waiting on arguments for some of my posts.

Consciousness and metacognition are two completely different attributes. As of now, there is absolutely no evidence that they are metacognitive, so I won't live my life under that assumption.

Just like plants?
Plants do not breathe, nor do they have any self awareness or though capabilities.

Plants actually do breathe. They draw in CO2 and breathe out O2.

big long list of comparisons

No, our teeth are not designed for eating meat, they can barely chew through cooked meat, and if we were carnivorous, they should be able to tear through it raw, with ease, like other carnivores.

You used two animal types there.

Carnivores and Herbavores

We are Omnivores.

But if you re-read the list, we are consistent with the characteristics of herbivores and not carnivores.

We are omnivores because we eat meat, not because we are designed to eat meat.

IT IS UNNATURAL to eat meat.

False, we have characteristics of carnivores and herbivores, even though our traits are nearer to herbivores. Omnivore=Organism that eats both green plants and other organisms. we fit that description. you argument has been rendered invalid.

i was born a vegetarian for 18 years, now i try to eat meat and it tastes like crap, not sure what everyone sees in it

It's because you're not used to it. Eat more of it, and you'll see you will be feeling way more healthy. Start with Salmon. (meat that is mostly eaten raw)

Can someone explain to me why I should care if an animal dies?

It serves no purpose to me, in the slightest other than to give me nutrients. Perhaps if chickens could teach us things and make regular conversation I'd be less inclined to eat them. I can't feel the pain they do, so it really doesn't phase me.

Of course someone would say that surely the same applies to humans, but to me it really doesn't. Humans can do so much more than mindless cattle, a human death is far more significant. I care about a human death because I can relate on many levels.

I'm not saying killing animals is fine with me - I only say it should be done with an end goal in mind. While farming animals is okay in my opinion because it sustains humans, killing for sport is not. Shooting animals just for the hell of it doesn't help anyone.

Of course he does, if he's enjoying himself. It's why he prefers snapping the spines of live animals and watching them squirm than play with a toy mouse.

If you want to eat meat ignore the people that tell you otherwise. I've had to deal with people like this in real life. It's just annoying.
