most of them died, but what remained left the galaxy to partake in the true Great Journey (the Terminals hint at following the Precursors to their final destination)

My jokes, so I don't lose them (ignore this):
ZedFish's Opinion on Sgt. Foley.
ZedFish's Forerunner Rickroll.

They did.

The Forerunner were an ancient race that had advanced technology, but were still humble enough to take up a 'Mantle' to protect all life.
To do this, they catalogued and studied all races and species.
However, when the Flood discovered them, or they discovered thee Flood, war broke out. Realising that because the Flood absorbs knowledge, they could not win, they built 7 massive Halo rings around the galaxy, capable of destroying all sentient life, starving the Flood.
So, they brought all species to the Ark, outside the Halos' range, and detonated them; killing themselves and all life left in the Galaxy. The Forerunners are never seen again.

Programmed sentinels dispatch the species at the Ark, and they are taken back to their home planets.

They were not all killed at the end of the Flood War. The Encyclopaedia states that the remainders of Forerunner civilisation left the Milky Way. It was also mentioned in the Terminals that they desired to follow in someone's footsteps. (Maybe the Precursor)
