Some things bother me about the flood, first of all how did the flood live between the Halos firing and now. Second of all why do we never see infected grunts and jackals yet the flood in Halo CE stacked the bodies in the corner or are they just clean? Third in Halo 2 gravemind says;
Fate had us meet as foes but this ring will make us brothers.
Why didn't we fight alongside the seemingly intelligent and diplomatic flood since gravemind is the central mind of the flood making High Charity less creepy when going through it as Master Chief in Halo 2 until the deactivation of the rings?

And happy holidays guys.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

1) Flood were stored inside containment facilities on the Halo Installations.
2) Grunts and Jackals lack the biomass and calcium to sustain the Flood organism.
3) The Gravemind was manipulating them, he doesn't want the Rings to be fired so he's pretending to be diplomatic. it's how he works, it's the same as what he did to Mendicant Bias.

This I understand but wouldn't we still fight alongside the flood until the deactivation of the rings returning us to enemies? It would have been done a lot quicker....

well u kind of do! seeing as he survived, he wanted them dead (as all flood do) but the crisis arised again in halo 3 at the ark, which they did team up to kill truth. then he tried to kill them again

Actually the grunts are jackals infections are those blobs things with tentacles walking things that if you fire at them explode and release more flood thingies.

Yeah Grunts and Jackals became Carrier Forms in the Halo games, the legs give them away.

Hmm. Surprised Snakie hasn't turned up. God, I miss that meme...

AJ has it right.

Flood infection forms and pure forms survive Halo firings because the Halo Array targets cells that these organisms lack, thus they survive.

However, when Gravemind had Chief and Arbiter search for the 'Icon' (Halo Index), he only held off the Flood until it had been found and secured. After that, he unleashed the Flood once more upon the High Charity.

I know that they would survive the initial firing but how would they survive without being fed at all and during the mission The Library in Halo CE they already had forms which that was supposed to be their containment if I'm correct and all creatures theoretically need contribution to survive or they just rot, wither, and die.

The Icon wasn't secured until the end of the game when the flood had already been released upon High Charity making Master Chiefs search efforts rather harder, then once finding out the rings were on standby gravemind should have held the flood off humanity until the rings were taken of standby the continue his campaign for galactic domination.

Creatures called Tardigrades can effectively hibernate during periods of unfavourable conditions that may otherwise kill them. They've been irradiated, frozen to Absolute Zero, boiled to 151 celsius and dehydrated for a decade, and still survived.
My guess is that the Flood are even hardier than that.

To learn more about the Flood, I highly recommend the sticky'd thread on the right, "The Precursor, The Flood, and the Acceleration of Evolution" by Lord Snakie.

Finding the love of my life, and moving house really screwed up my gaming orientated lifestyle.

We had a meme?

OT: Yeah, basically everything JDYeash937 said is the answer.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

There's a clear explanation to it all. On the Halo rings, the Flood was in cryo or in some form of suspended animation, untill they were reawakened by the Covenant.

Jackals and Grunts cant be infected because they do not support enough calcium for a combat form to form around. If anything, they'll be transformed into Carrier Forms or as mass into a Proto or even the final Gravemind.

This statement becomes invalid when you play Halo Wars, the flood isn't released and had been there the entire time.

That is why I said in my post ''on the halo rings''. Jackals and Grunts being infected were just gameplay elements, but have no real canon value. Unless this is a variation of the Flood SuperCell we've come to know and love.
