I enjoyed oni. It had interesting level design, a good sense of humour, a very different control style and an action leading female character that was not about breast size (more on this later). Sure the controls were difficult to master, and some of the moves we complex, but that is part of why it was a good game. How many action games give you the choice of ways to complete a level? How many games give you choices as to the way the game will end. Oni has 2 endings, and that is awesome!

As people said, it was not nearly as polished as it could have been, and bungie had to cut multiplayer :(. Still, the game had style, solid gameplay and a interesting weapon set. I would love to see oni revisited, or at least other games picking up that style of game (Ninja gaiden and prince of persia come close).

Side rant:
I like bungie because they treat the game market as if they are mature. They respond to their fans, they use their games as a vehicle to tell quality stories and they don't feel they need to bolster their games feature set with simple gimmicks like focusing only on graphics, trying to market to angsty teens or trying to use sex as a way of drawing customers. Sure, the game industry is broad and and there is scope for many styles of games, but the game industry as seem to still be marketing games as they were 15 years ago. Bungie are different :)

Oni was rushed, not only for the reasons Jäger puts forth (which are very correct and detailed, by the way), but also because of us. We wanted that game. We wanted it bad. And the loooong delays were resulting in a lot of discontent in the community, probably worse than what it was for Marathon, because the community was so much bigger at the time.

Negativity aside, I love Oni. I still play it. I currently play it more frequently than Halo. Not only does it have an awesome story (which, unfortunately, was left for the most part unexplored to any extent, let alone to that of Marathon and Myth), the gameplay was unique and revolutionary at the time. The controls seem perfect. I don't care if the level design is bland and repetitive - isn't this the first thing people who don't like Halo bring up?

It's a great game. Full stop. And Konoko is one of the best characters in a computer game ever.

You can't change me!

I do believe that is what alot of people think is so great about Halo... they think it's a great story, revolutionary gameplay, cool lead character etc etc.

I have been known previously for much anti-Halo sentiment for this very reason. I've never played Oni, but as it is a Bungie game it undoubtedly brought in some great changes that you guys aren't picking up on, and don't say something like "well it was good for it's time..." because like Marathon it's probably still a great and fantastic game, or our mods wouldn't be playing it :P

BTW Marathon beats Doom 3 with both arms and legs tied behind it's back, end of story ;-)

-- Tristan is once more hoping not to have offended people, but things need to be said. people shouldn't bag a game because it's not "up to scratch" with Halo, it's a matter of opinion. Tristan sends out his thoughts to the Bungie personel who have undoubtedly had their feelings injured by such callous remarks.
