From imbd:
Will the Halo movie follow the same story as the first Halo video game?
Yes, in part. There have been multiple scripts written for the movie and they all, roughly, follow the events of the original game, Halo: Combat Evolved. There are some major differences though... In one version of the script Master Chief, the main character from the video games, plays a supporting role while the main story focuses on a group of Marines. Also, other major characters and plot devices in the movie may come from the Halo novels and not necessarily from the game.
Most likely they are going to try and make more then just one film and focus on the novels. Then lead in to the Halo Films based more on the games.
Breaking this down:
There have been multiple scripts written for the movie and they all, roughly, follow the events of the original game, Halo: Combat Evolved.
It will not follow the primary storyline of the first game, aside from Master Chief being there.
There are some major differences though... In one version of the script Master Chief, the main character from the video games, plays a supporting role while the main story focuses on a group of Marines.
In the plot summary on IMBD a portion of the first sentence is, "After they crash-land on an artificial ring-world called 'Halo', "
If I recall, in John's drop pod, everyone died. There were about 5 other drop pods, most of which the entire crew died. The rest waited until Master Chief arrived, then got on a Pelican and shipped off to who-knows-where. Keyes and his team were held captive for a while until Master Chief bailed them out. So basically, we either watch a few soldiers fight Covenant in one spot until a ship picks them up, or we watch a few soldiers sit in a cage until Master Chief picks them up, assuming this matches the Halo CE storyline they promised to follow (which it will not)
Also, other major characters and plot devices in the movie may come from the Halo novels and not necessarily from the game.
This is probably the best thing said in the entire article, but unfortunately those who have not read the books will likely be lost.
Most likely they are going to try and make more then just one film and focus on the novels. Then lead in to the Halo Films based more on the games. This is saying there are going to be more movies than necessary focusing on books and games, bringing nothing new to the table.
