Subject: Reach: Armour

I thought about putting this in the Halo: Reach forum, but I decided against it.. for obvious reasons. To the point, however.

Halo 3 introduced armour permutations and little smidgets of lore for those new looking armours. Designed to fill various roles that the default MK.6 MJOLNIR armour was either ill-equipped for or just ineffcient in, such as the EOD or EVA.

In Reach, this concept has been taken to the next step, with a huge gamut of new armour models available for use, and alot of additional lore for these armours, to S2's and S3's in the field.

So, let us ponder. What roles are left unfilled by the MJOLNIR program? What armours prototyped the ones we currently see in the universe, such as the SPI-lookalike MK.5[P]. Is, for example, full SPI armour compatible with the then-in use MK.5 armour and the later Mk.6?

What about other weapon's programs such as the GUNGNIR? That brought forth not only UNSC trooper/marine armour compatible shoulder guards, but a Mk.5/6 exclusive helmet to guard an operator against the Slaser's radiation/glare.

Good edit. I think GUNGNIR was made for the Spartan Laser program, so I suppose there are lots of niches to be filled by armor. Why a Spartan would wear a helmet solely for the laser is beyond me though, what happens if you don't have a laser with you?

GUNGNIR was the S-Laser program. And I'd assume, if you weren't using a laser at the time, it would make a good 'halfway' job EOD helmet, since it shares the same rebreather attachments. Since it's basicly a big lump of metal over your face afterall.

Plus, it might be full of extra targeting gear that the standard Mk.5 ( I'll just assume MK.5 from here on out for simplicity's sake ) doesn't have.

I also wonder about helmets that don't seem to have any real differences or special attachments. What makes the Recon helmet different than a MK V or a Grenadier helmet, all seem to fit different roles, but the only distinguishable difference is shape.

With some of the 'shape' diffrence helms, it's pretty easy to notice WHY the shape is diffrent. mk.5 Scout for instance, has a lower profile than mk.5 AA or the default mk.5.

I guess the other diffrences for stuff like mk.5R could be software upgrades, or maybe a VISR system? I do hate falling back on guesswork.

I always wondered what Security was for (it's my favorite)
and why there was no submarine permutation also I always wanted a armor for SPARTANS like Kelly who could run EXTREMELY fast

i agree, an underwater variant of the Mjolnir mk5/6 is something i'd like to see. just imagine if a team of spartans rose up from the depths in the black of night... the grunts would kill themselves on the spot

I assumed the metal visor of the GUNGNIR helmet was like a facemask that could be raised when not in use to reveal a standard transparent visor underneath. A spartan wouldn't run about with his/her metal visor down all the time. :P

How about an armour that looks athstetically similar to regular Marine/Army armour systems. It's a tactic used today by SF to blend into regular units as to not attract attention to themselves. I imagine ocassionally it would be useful for a spartan to dissapear into a group of marines.

We already have ODST/MP helmets but the chest peices in paticular are still obviously MJOLNIR. A splash of camoflague wouldn't go amiss either.

It'd be a bit pointless - if a spartan wants to move around a UNSC base undetected he doesn't wear armour and just pretends to be some freakishly huge dude.

If he's in combat he should be wearing his armour - it gives moral to the troops + the covenant / innies would be just as keen to fire upon marines - who would want to attract the attention of the most lethal thing in the universe besides the Halos?
