Subject: Halo technology is Extremely Low Tech for 500 years in the future

Obvious and 'nuff said

Except for shields idk how that would work out but it probably will

Well, look at the grenade in real life.

It was invented before the Civil War and hasn't changed very much at all!

Also, Submarines were invented, or built during the civil war, but the Union didn't think much of them so they tore them apart for scraps.

That would be awesome. I won't be here to see it, which bums be out. This did make me LOL though...

Try going to a part of this world, eat the food there, drink the water there, and breath that air. In many parts of the world it won't take long before you get sick. Either from the food, or just local germs.

Now try that on an extra-solar level. Diffrent sun, gravity, and ecosystem to screw with you.

That's one of the many tech advances that are just invisible in many sci fi books and games.

  • 12.29.2010 12:51 PM PDT

I'm not sure, think of all the things they made.

- Colonized on over 500 worlds?
- Developed thousands of space ships?
- Faster than light travel?
- Pollution is a thing of the past?
- Spartan Super soldiers?
- NOVA bomb?

What were you expecting, flying cars?

Humanity has been in war constantly after year 2160. First was the interplanetary war. After that came the insurrection. Then right in the middle of insurrection came Covenant.

Humanity has needed lots of cheap weapons. High tech weapons are not that. Also, if you had an old reliable projectile based weapon and a prototype high tech weapon which was not guaranteed to work properly which would you rely on?

Other reason is that humanity probably had other concerns than war. If we already have problems with Earth's growing population you can think what it's like in 2160. Of course there were already humans living on other planets in solar system but still there probably were way too many people. Humanity needed a solution fast. That's why weapon technology wasn't probably on top of list of priorities.

Not much after slipspace drive was invented insurrection started in the outer colonies.

We also mustn't forget weapon innovations like which we don't have today: MAC guns, Spartan laser, NOVA bomb, M99 Stanchion Gauss Rifle.

There was only weapon technology which is the main thing most people concern as " low tech". If we list non weapon innovations we get a pretty big list: Slipspace drives, smart AI, shield technology, powerful fusion technology, small memory crystals that can house an AI, HUD that recognizes what weapon you are holding, small but powerful jet pack, cryo-technology. I am too tired to think anything besides those but there is more.

The technology in Halo seems like modern day technology but it's just because most weapons have some resemblance to modern day weapons.

If you're asking how shields work, I can shed some light.

The shields used by the Covenant and the SPARTANs are electromagnetic. They repulse incoming projectiles, dispersing plasma based projectiles and slowing bullets to the point where they are not a threat.

The single bulletular exception is the Sniper, as the rounds used in it are ginormous and specifically designed to pierce shields and armour.

When the shields are doing to much work, the capacitors pwering them fail and the shields fall.

So stronger shields are made by more powerful capacitors?

  • 12.29.2010 1:20 PM PDT

It would make sense that a Supercarrier has a bigger shield power generator than a Spartan or an Elite.

Slipspace Travel
800+ worlds colonized, started in the 22nd century
Advanced weapons
Starships
Cold Plasma
Teleportation
Energized light
Artificial Intelligence
Advanced Ballistic and Power Armor
Heads up displays
The Nova Bomb

I could keep going.

Keep in mind a lot of this innovation started in the 22nd century, not the 26th.

  • 12.29.2010 2:22 PM PDT

The only areas I think they haven't improved much is with:

Warthog
Tank
Infantry arms
Grenades
General Civilian transportation

For the grenades, it's been stated that they haven't developed much since, and really how can you innovate with grenades? They can't just make them bigger because they also have to consider the stuff they're not trying to kill.

And with everything else, honestly how much better can it get? In the Halo-verse maybe guns have hit they're peak? There really isn't much of a way to improve on them aside from Gauss technology, and then the next step would probably be plasma.

And the cars can only be so advanced, with the only goal being fuel efficiency, they're shape will adapt to accommodated that.

I wouldn't be suprised, I saw enough people claiming that Halo is not a realstic future because they don't have flying cars...
Riiight, let's just give every human an aircraft, since we know we are all very good drivers and most certainly won't crash our flying cars into houses...

it is not really technolegy, but i have been wondering why everyone isn't taller. i mean we are like 2ft. taller then people 500 years ago (averge). i just want to why if they can settle on other planets but can't get good enough food to grow taller.

A very good point, HOWEVER, a large part of that is because of sanitation levels. I.e. Mexican water, Indian air. On a new planet neither would exist, however what I think would get you is any diseases on the planet that humanity has never had any exposure to.

Also keep in mind that the planets would be very similar to earth in terms of gravity and temperature, otherwise we wouldnt be able to survive, and that most of the planets in the halo universe were terraformed (I believe)

  • 12.29.2010 6:44 PM PDT

We believe that the universe is unbounded: this is not the same as infinite: the 2-D surface of a sphere, wrapped around a 3rd dimension, has a finite size, but has no end. If you start off in a given direction on the surface of a sphere, you could return to your start point without having to turn around -- you simply go all the way around. But wouldn't that mean the universe has an escape velocity like the earth?

Lol, agreed.

  • 12.29.2010 8:46 PM PDT

The weapons and ground transport are low tech but the UNSC can travel faster than light and have artifical gravity, things which are thought to be near impossible according to current scientific theory.

this.

the UNSC is realitically advanced and doesn't have a ten year olds interpretation of what technologially advanced really is.

Not saying the OP is a ten year old; most of the UN's technology is obscure and not noticed as much because its not for civillians. Civillian life in 2552 really shouldn't be that different then today if you look at ODST.

"Warthog
Tank
Infantry arms
Grenades"

because they kill just fine. After nearly hundreds of little quasi wars, like one guy already said, you needed to get reliable weapons for cheap out in the field ASAP.

I never understood flashier sci-fi weapons at all really. Does a MA5C kill any less efficiently then the DC-17 rifle from Star Wars: Republic Commando?

No. The DC kills worse actually, but has "t3h 14z0rz" that aren't even lasers. (SW wapons=plasma bolts, like the Covenant, not lasers)

The fun part is when you throw in the belt fed bullet gun and physical projectile assualt rifle the Trandoshans used later in the game. They work BETTER then the flashier "l4z3r" guns sometimes.

"Riiight, let's just give every human an aircraft, since we know we are all very good drivers and most certainly won't crash our flying cars into houses..."

Hey Verecetti; still pissed at the Mass Effect fanboys?

On a related note, ******'s mom has really nice boobs, and it doesn't take much booze or encouragement to get her to let the puppies out of the pen...if you know what I mean...

I blame Stosh.

He probably did something to mess up human guns.

But look at everything they do have. You don't fix what ain't broke.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.” – Psalms 46:1-3

aside from the ability to travel from solar system to solar system, go in into cryo sleep and be revived without incident.

The creation of super soldiers. ( Spartans)

multiple space elevators ( one of the hardest things ever imagined to be built)

The ability to take a barren planet and within 50 years taraform it into a livable planet.

Sorry but the halo universe has technologies so far ahead of us it blows my mind.
