I have been thinking, why aren't people taller than people today in the halo universe? 500 years ago people were 2ft. shorter than people today. So why is every one like 6ft. tall? I mean Cheif is about 6ft. and as we see he is very healthy. Don't you think the would have healthyer food. So can enyone tell ,me why they aren't taller?

Master chief was about 6'11 and he had undergone a series of augmentations to reach that height.

What, evolutionary speaking, would make it necessary for humans to be taller? If anything, I'd expect humans 500 years from now to be fatter and less mobile; which is what I'd expect the evolutionary outcome of technology doing everything for us would be.

i thought that was with his armor on, and i also mean the average joe. if they have advansed so much why don't they have healthyer food or ways of doing things that make them taller?

Win.

I imagine that they were not made taller for one of three reasons:
1) Bungie didn't think about that
2) It's unlikely that we are to grow as a species anymore, since there is no real 'need' for us to do su
3) Bungie felt people would have difficulty adjusting to a world where people's average height is 8 feet tall.

Something similar to that is shown in Halo.
It's noted in Contact Harvest how the recruits for the Harvest Colonial Militia who came from farms were actually quite unfit, since machines did all the manual labour.

Evolution so far is unwritten. As of this moment we don't have any evidence as to what we're going to look like. If anything, we'll just be fatter due to the increase in technology and the downgrade in quality foods.

basically the people from wall e?

  • 12.30.2010 5:40 AM PDT

ok so 500years ago people were not 2ft shorter that would make the average person in the 1500s under 4ft tall and that is deffinatly untrue.
they have also unearthed a race of people in the mountains somewhere that were all around 7ft, the only way you would be taller 500years from now would be if you were on a planet with less gravity and then our bodys would naturally adapt over the generations to the new planet making a taller race

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Well I suppose you could say that people who happened to develop exceptional size reproduced more because women love tall men right? So clearly this would have to happen enough that enough people with genetic predisposition to height reproduce a lot in five hundred years. Also, sometime in the near future polygamy catches on so it's acceptable to have many partners and so after 500 years and a ridiculous amount of sex most of the world's population would be taller.

It's simple.

Technology doing many things for us doesn't necessarily make us fat. Evolution my make us understand that we should live healthily. Technology could do some work for us giving us more free time. We really can't know what is going to happen.

We may think that we can count on technology but evolution won't. As no species could actually survive if they were completely dependent on technology. There is always a chance for that technology to fail and it does that a lot. Power outages for example.

That is correct, because the lighter gravity would cause the bones in our spines to spread out a bit, making us slightly taller, but only by inches.

I don't think that a low-gravity planet would be an ideal colonization spot though. People tend to stay in their comfort zones, so I think that the UNSC would colonize earth-like planets in terms of environment/gravity. If that is true, then people would stay basically the same height as today.

We were not shorter in the past and taller now because of evolution.

It is because our diets are fundamentally different than what out ancestors ate. On average none of us have ever felt threat of starvation or malnutrition. We get the vitamins and minerals we need, and generally the work load put on our bodies is much less. That is why we are taller not any kind of evolutionary pressure. Which couldn't happen in a hand full of generations.

It is therefore unlikely that our descendants would be much taller than us unless they specifically sought that with either some sort of chemical enhancements or genetic alterations, or they lived in lower gravity fields.

Yeah I would think they would be taller, but Bungie probably just didn't think of that.

They reason we are getting taller is becuase we are getting fatter so in response our bodies are growing taller and our feet are getting bigger

1) The reason you evolve is so that you can change accordingly to your needs. Adaptation. We do not need to adapt in size.

2) Humans 500 years ago were as tall as us.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

I doubt that people really have the need to be taller, and so evolution wouldn't make us taller.

i exagereted, but that is not true. Aberham Licone was a little over 6 ft. tall and that was considered really tall.

My first post sounded arngery, which i did not mean to do. i was just wondering why they didn't get taller. And the people who are saying we didn't need to get taller, people could have said the same, and yet we got taller. Also i am sorry for the 2ft. thing, i miss typed.

The quality of living was probably very similar, maybe only a little bit better. It's not like from now to Halo's time period is as big an advancement in technology/medicine/etc as the 1500s to now.

ah, an evolutionist, well according to your own belief, would it take several thousands of years to change much?
