Subject: Why aren't people taller 500 years from now?

We believe that the universe is unbounded: this is not the same as infinite: the 2-D surface of a sphere, wrapped around a 3rd dimension, has a finite size, but has no end. If you start off in a given direction on the surface of a sphere, you could return to your start point without having to turn around -- you simply go all the way around. But wouldn't that mean the universe has an escape velocity like the earth?

I have been thinking, why aren't people taller than people today in the halo universe? 500 years ago people were 2ft. shorter than people today. So why is every one like 6ft. tall? I mean Cheif is about 6ft. and as we see he is very healthy. Don't you think the would have healthyer food. So can enyone tell ,me why they aren't taller?

1) The reason you evolve is so that you can change accordingly to your needs. Adaptation. We do not need to adapt in size.

2) Humans 500 years ago were as tall as us.

i exagereted, but that is not true. Aberham Licone was a little over 6 ft. tall and that was considered really tall.

So? In Asia today im 6 ft 3 and im considered a giant. Hell, im a ft taller than 85% of my family. In most countries in the world the average height is still within the 5ft range.

Things like genetics and environment are also fundamental to the development of human height, even nutrition and physical labor have to be taken into account. Humans 500 years ago were still near our height, and I bet you that if they lived in todays world, they would not be midgets, or even close to midgets, unless the planet had a case of dwarfism. >_>

evolution isn't predictable son. For all we know, we could get shorter in 500 years.

Five hundred years ago the average height may have been 5'6" to 5'4" among those who recorded history extensively of that time period.

The average height today is 5'8" although the average height recorded back then was done so by europeans who are generally taller, so I'm guessing the average height would among Europeans would be 5' 10".

And increase of four inches, they may have incorporated this into the games for all you know and you didn't notice.

Anyways, those five hundred years were full of general death and survival of the fittest, much more accelerated evolutionarily than today.

So whatever.

Halo is one of the most important part of my life.

Maybe they'll be taller if we dont travel through space. The lack of gravity makes the body smaller.

Actually that would elongate our bodies, as they would grow just the same, but not wear down as you do yours everyday.

In the future I actually expect that things would trend towards shortness, because of the confinement of space travel and the increase in technology.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

Increase in technology would cause would cause population to collectively become shorter? Ellaborate?

Probably because humanity has no need for more tallness than we already have, because we would have a lot better tech and it would help us with daily tasks. However, if you pay attention to the height of Jorge or other SPARTANS in halo reach or the halo series, you can see that, thanks to physical augmenting and dna experiments, the SPARTANS are exceptionally taller than any marine.

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

They forgot to eat their vegetables.

It was not evolution apparently no one bothered to read my post on the last page. So I'll summarize it real quick.

1). We did not get taller from Evolution

2). We got taller from our improved diet

3). We are unlikely to continue getting taller this way in the future

4). Unless it is a conscious choice using chemical or genetic means.

For people just throwing in the most unhelpful and ignorant statements like "evolution is false" and "evolution is a belief", as well as using the term "evolutionist", please stop, you contribute nothing to this discussion. The term "evolutionist" is obsolete; as it's now a known fact that humans evolved. Whether you believe in a god or not is a completely different matter, but evolution happened, you can't deny that.

Technology can do more things for a human; there is less need for them to be tall to reach high places, or to frighten predators. Tall people would become a liability because of their inability to hide or move easily through confined areas of ships.

Of course, any evolutionary trending like that is almost completely negated by the technological levels that we have even today. Evolution is only really truly practical when we have sticks and stones and maybe some fire, because then the lot of us that aren't able genetically get beaten out. Nowadays if Mr. Genius decides to climb a tree and break his leg, he doesn't get eaten by a lion in the savanna.

  • 12.31.2010 12:19 PM PDT

I think height would vary on the planet more than the time. For example, people from Mars (with lower gravity) would be taller than people from Reach (with higher gravity).

No where near - Tier 3 is when a species can harvest the energy of a galaxy.

Tier 1 - harvest the energy of a planet (ie use all our energy from renewable resources like wind, geothermal, etc - we're not there yet).

Tier 2 - harvest the power of a sun completely (ie encase it or absorb radiation not going to planets, etc.)

The term "evolutionist" is obsolete; as it's now a known fact that humans evolved. Whether you believe in a god or not is a completely different matter, but evolution happened, you can't deny that.

Fact: Nothing in science is ever proven. Everything we 'know' in science is just things that have not been disproven yet.

Evolution is not directional. It doesn't come about to complete a task. Its the result of random mutations that just happen to get passed on. Some women may prefer taller men. That is not enough to increase the height of the overall population. A) Not all tall men can reproduce. B) Not all women will find tall men. C) Not all women prefer tall men. D) Not all tall men are hetero-blam!-. E) Not all children will inherit genes for height from their fathers. F) Not all tall men are attractive to all women who would otherwise find them attractive for their height. (ie, they ugly)

Thus, the actual impact that the tall=desirable theory has would be quite small.

As an earlier poster said, the change in height was due to improved diet due to advances in scientific knowledge and availability of different food sources. Few Americans are restricted to, say, potatoes every day.

What, evolutionary speaking, would make it necessary for humans to be taller? If anything, I'd expect humans 500 years from now to be fatter and less mobile; which is what I'd expect the evolutionary outcome of technology doing everything for us would be.

mod beat me to it, but this is what i was going to say. being taller in just 500 years has more to do with better nutrition.

That is why we must stay fit.

But what could allow us to play video games and still be fit?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...... Maybe I shall create a device. Like Natal? No Kinect!

  • 01.01.2011 8:15 AM PDT

I play Halo and I'm awesome. Although not usually at the same time.

Diet is a key factor to why humans have grown taller. In the Seventh century the average spartan was 5'2.((Seriously) If you didn't notice, that's three sevens).

... That's just eerie.

Seriously though, proper diet is the main reason why mankind has grown over the centuries. The average height might raise slightly in a thousands years, if we find a way to be even more healthier. Which at the rate we're going, not likely.
