I have the same dilemma. My computer has an intel pentium 4 procceser (2.40 GHz), with 256 mb ram and windows xp. I have an Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 (256 mb ram) video card. I am faced with the decision of which computer to buy, and wether its worth paying another $200 to get a high end video card (GeForce 6600? or some Ati radeon........).

I'm thinking that I'll get an Xbox 360 and do most of my gaming on it, but then have a good, solid, slightly above average gaming computer for mmorpgs or other things (world of warcraft for xbox 360? hm......).

Well......Im thinking that computers weren't (and aren't) meant solely for gaming. Sure you can get 2 gb ram and a 3.40 GHz processer........but with most of the consoles with online multiplayer now, the short lived advantages the computer had are waning (xbox 360 has power of like 3 desktop computers! It's insane!)

Stupid parents let their stupid children play games that are rated M when they should be playing Big Birds Spelling Adventures

Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

Personally, I would upgrade the PC. A few points I have:
1. XBOX LIVE(which I have) costs $50 a year plus headset and 360 hard drive, but PC online is free.
2. You can play Halo 1 and Halo 2 on XBOX 360, but Halo 2 will eventually come out for PC and it will probably support a lot of modding stuff.
3. There are a lot of jerks on XBOX LIVE(most aren't though), and you have to deal with modders, standbyers, delevelers, but on PC most people aren't like that.
4. On XBOX you get limited downloadable content. With PC you get tons of mods and stuff for most popular games.
5. PC will be here forever, XBOX 360 will be gone after 4 years.
6. Most PC games that have XBOX versions are better on PC. Examples include all Tom Clancy games, Counter Strike, Battlefield 2, COD2, and some others. One I can think of that comes out next year is Ghost Recon 3. It won't be mainstreamed like the XBOX 360 version will be. The only real games on XBOX that are better on XBOX are the sports games, simply because most of them aren't on PC.(PGR, Rallisport 2, NCAA 2006, ESPN NFL 2k5, et cetera.
7. PCs are upgradable whenever you want to upgrade them, the only upgrade you can get for the 360 is a bigger hard drive.

Now, just to be clear, I have XBOX LIVE and I enjoy it a lot. I like my PC a lot too, and although I got my XBOX before I got my gaming PC, I like the PC better right now just because of the games I can play, and the lack of jerks on them. The only thing from XBOX that I really miss on PC is the standard voice feature on every online game.

Also, what is your budget for the upgrades, and what do you want to upgrade? I can do some searching around for you to find the best prices. Also, what motherboard do you have?

I personaly think a PC is, and always will be, better than a console. For one thing, you can upgrade it with the latest hardware. Two, you can mod the hell outa most computer games, unlike console games. Three, you can get higher resolutions with a PC (although 360 can play on a moniter). Four, you can do more than one thing with a PC, its like a cell phone. You used to only talk on your cellphone(consoles), now you can take pictures, surf the net, textmessage, etc etc(PC). No monthly online gaming service to pay for. Expansion packs for games. The list goes on and on and on.

HOWEVER

If all you want to do is play games, then get a console, its probably cheaper.
