SPOILERS BE HERE!

Particularly, I am referring to the data pads and the newly revealed first 2 chapters of Cyrptum.

Now, I have yet to read the data pads, ands I would like someone to go over exactly what was revealed, but as I understand, AI's having been running the show since much father back than previously thought, and one even was turned into a human.

I am not even going to go over what was revealed in the 2 chapters, as it basically re-writes all canon we have in some way or another.

How do you guys feel about these changes>

Well, every event thus far now has prior infrequences. In other words, all assumptions we had about the nature of the forerunner/human relation have cahnged, which caused much of the in universe history to happen the way it did, and therefore deterimed the main plot of the games.

So in a way, all of the canon is now affected.

Reach was meh. It was not as big as the other games in terms of plot or story. It did not really reveal much depth about what was happening. It felt quite shallow I think.

The Data Pads were okay in my opinion. There is a lot of stuff in them. I do not think there is anything contradictory in them.

Cryptum... lol. It is a good lol though. So far from what I have seen of the first 2 chapters, I have liked it.

As for what is in the Data Pads. An assembly of AI's have been pulling the strings of Humanity's destiny since the mid 2300's. They are primarily concerned with the survival of the Human species seeing as their own existence hinges upon it.

There is a lot in them. I'll just list some of the major things. They are responsible for first contact with the Covenant. They manipulated ORION and The Carver findings (Supposedly) so that they could get to Dr. Halsey. That was all so that they could achieve the Spartan-II program.

They classified Onyx in 2400 as top secret. They may also have given away the locations of colony worlds in order to maximise time for Humanity and so that the Covenant could be analysed for the longest time possible to find any weaknesses. You get the impression from one of the Data Pads that they possessed the means to end the war at any time, although doing so would risk Humanitys existence as well.

I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.
Also I earned the All Star nameplate with this submission to Week 14 All Stars http://www.bungie.net/images/News/Inline11/bwu_0415/art/likea boss.jpg

Reach only changed the events of what happened at Reach. Though as far as I can tell the events of The Fall of Reach (book) still take place, just at different time periods of the month of July-august.
I'm alright with some of the changes.

But how do you feel? Are in support of the new canon and the changes it makes, or do you feel it is to far?

I am a monument to all your sins

I am quite intrigued by what was reveiled in the Cryptum chapters.

Support overall. If Cryptum followed a story that we all suspected was true up until now then I doubt it would be as interesting. This has totally surprised us. I do not think I have ever read a fan-fic that explored the idea that Cryptum is putting forth.

What do you mean changes? There was not anything there previous to Cryptum being released so no canon has changed, only people's ideas about what they thought happened.

Well, the effect of the reveal probably has more implications then what we have seen so far...

  • 01.01.2011 12:41 AM PDT

I really hated Reaches campaign canon-wise. But the data pads and Cryptum are a different story. The data pads are fine, and I think they add some very interesting backstory that still fits with existing canon.

Cryptum also seems interesting, but it changes (i think) some of the canon on human history. I was under the impression that human history was the same as we know it today, with the exception that Noahs Ark was humanity's viewpoint/explanation of the Forerunner/Flood war. Cryptum seems to imply that prior to the Forerunner/Flood war, humans were space capable and had established a large empire. When they came into contact with Forerunners, a war was started that devastated humanity and caused them to regress.

I'm not 100% sure on this, so i'll wait till the novel comes out.

  • 01.01.2011 2:27 AM PDT

I think that what was revealed in Cryptum and the AIs in the data-pad are more closely linked than we think. I'll wait until I read the full book but there's a theory brewing in my mind.

that's why it was speculation. A lot of theories could still hold true, but just need to be modified slightly to fit the new information.

But yes, it DID change how I view the Haloverse.

The canon hasn't changed exept for a minor one with reach's campaign but a lot was added

The data pads just told that a few AIs (possibly forerunner or maybe not) controlled things in human history

The forerunners were a information void so cryptum will fill that void

Also my opinion on cryptum is that aver all the first two chapters were good but the forerunner talked too much like the covies when talking about humans

Reach didn't break canon too much, it was mainly the dates, and we can mark that up to the crystal anyways.

  • 01.02.2011 2:51 PM PDT

Think before you post

I'm actually more comfortable with the canon changes. I would've found it hard to believe that the creator of the Spartan I and II programs would have no idea about Spartan IIIs. Other than that, this is all new stuff that should fit into the existing canon just fine.

While we're on the topic. Can someone please explain the affect of that goddamn crystal to me? It somehow sent them back in time, or something?

It warped time, it didn;t actually move them backwards or fowards.

Like faster than light travel, think of it as a speed boost in slipspace.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

I detest what Bungie did to canon with Reach, it was a terrible move.

I'm fine with everything else, Cryptum's opening chapters were bloody brilliant.

Didn't they go from September 22nd at Halo to September 12 at Reach though?

It's a bit more complicated than that.

Technically speaking, slipsace is faster than light travel, so it's kind of time travel too.

I can't really think of a good way to explain it, go look it up on halopedia.

you dont need to use the crystal Halseys Journal clears it up 1 continent on the other side of reach was attacked and oni covered it up by having the army attack the advance war party, among other things thought they had it under control untill the 30th of course, I tihnk if bungie had the attention slipspace cutscene from LNOS after the Package it would of all felt right from the get go.

I'm getting sick of this.
The book has more inconsistencies than the game does; in fact, the only thing the game contradicts is the book.

I trust the more... reliable source.
Reach fell in a day? Maybe Nylund got his dates wrong again.

Moving on.
I really did love the first Cryptum chapters, and I really like the way it fleshes out human history.
It fills all the gaps in the games of Humans operating Forerunner tech, and gives us an insight into Forerunner customs (how they raise their offspring, death ceremonies and rituals, etc.).
Can't wait for the full book.
