It might make a difference, but not that big of one. Its not very high on the bottle neck list.

What processor slot type do you have? 428?
Try finding a hard drive here. They usually have the best prices on hardware.

a dimension 2400? If your budget allows, get a newer pc. Something with the following:

*PCI-Express
*SATA hard drive support
*64-bit support
*DDR2 RAM compatability

* Pr: ĭnʹtərnĕts: "I hear there's rumors on the uh (pause), Internets...

A bigger hard-drive wouldn't give you much better performance anyways.

dell 2400s are not particularly good computers. if you can get a new computer. something with a decent graphics card etc. i would reccomend a nvidia card a 3.00 ghz pentim 4 and about 512 mb of ram. most dell pc's come with intergrated graphics cards which honestly suck.

Can you find out which motherboard you have?

Yes, it'll work. I'm 99% sure it's IDE, so it'll work on any pc made from the early 90's and on.

As far as your pc - you could buy new parts and put them in it. It'll still look like the same old Dell, and he won't know.

But, to figure out what you have now, you should download this program and install it. Open it and look under "Information Modules". Click on "System Summary" and tell us the following:
* Processor [Model]
* Video System [Adapter]
* Physical Storage Devices [Hard Disk]

Then, go to "Mainboard Information" and tell us the following:
* Mainboard [Manufacturer and Model]
* Chipset
* Memory Module 1 and Memory Module 2 [Type]
* Expansion Slots [just list the information under the right column "value"]

All right, that was a lot to ask, I know, but it'll give me as much information as possible so I can tell you where you need an upgrade [or upgrades]. Also, for anyone else wondering about the intricacies of their system, or asking for hardware advice, the program in the link is SiSoftware Sandra. It's an awesome diagnostic and benchmark program and I suggest you get it.

Okay, you have a socket 478 motherboard, which isn't bad. Northwood processors are still pretty good [that would be an upgrade...].

However, it only has one PCI slot, onboard graphics, 128MB of RAM...I'd say it needs a bit of TLC. If you want to upgrade to run everything better, I'd start with the graphics, and in order to do that well, you need a new motherboard. However, it wouldn't make much sense to buy a socket 478 board, as its lifespan has ended. If you want better graphics for a while, one that will last past the next six months, then you will need a new setup.

Are you absolutely positive you can't get a new pc altogether? If not, then I can start figuring out some ways to upgrade it, but you definately need more RAM and better graphics.

i dont think you would be able to get a laptop for below $800 with decent graphics. tiny computers which has gone bust is selling all their computers off cheaply. where i live (uk) they are selling pc's with nvidia sli 7800s 19 inch lcd and 1 gig of ram and athlon 64 4000's for £499 which is about 550 dollars or so. they might not be doing this in americabut if they do thats the kind of thing to get.
