Subject: The Most "un-Spartan-like" lines in Reach

I have created this thread as a compilation of lines from the Reach campaign from Spartans that didn't fit the personality of a Spartan as depicted by Nylund in his books. This is meant to be a contribution thread, so please state the line/dialog, who said it or what characters it was between, and the context. I will gladly explain defend the ones in my OP.

Jorge: Sir, why would rebels want to cut us off from the rest of the colonies?
Carter: If you have chance, maybe you can ask them Jorge.
First mission, en route to investigating COM disruption.

Jorge: Is this sanctioned sir?
Carter: What do you think?
When Kat was laying out her plan to take the fight to the Covenant before mission Long Night of Solace

Emile: Who's next?!...How 'bout you!
Instant before Emile's death

I don't like how Carter acts towards Jorge...considering Jorge could demolish Carter with a single punch...or curb stomp :3

why is Jorge even with the spaten 3's. if you read halo evolutions: cole protocal you would know kurt is the only spartan 2 who became a spartan 3

i know Jorge didn't become a spartan 3 but i still don't think he should be paired with cheap, ment to die, versions of his "invincible saivor" project
*facepalm*
Kurt didn't become a spartan-3 he was just their mentor. That is like saying Sergeant Mendez is a Spartan-2 because he teaches them.

if you read halo evolutios: cloe protocal it says that ambrose turns him into the only spartan 2 to become a spartan 3

Emile actually says 'I'm Ready! How bout you!?"
The scene actually goes:
*kills Zealot with shotgun*
"Who's next?!"
*stabbed with Energy Sword*
"I'm ready! How 'bout you?!"
*kills other Zealot*

hes ready to die which is a spartan like thing to say

another unspartanlike thing to say is on the second level of reach when you go inside a building. an AI says "a customer service represenitive will be right with you." and kat says "i doubt that." (or somthing like that)

  • 01.03.2011 4:35 PM PDT

hes a caretaker in many ways, as the spartan 3 project wasn't that successful, as so many of them died, they are weaker, they needed a person to guide them the shadows to keep them alive and on the right path

  • 01.03.2011 5:52 PM PDT

the spartan 3 project is only spark compared to the spartan 2 project. the spartan 3 armour is extreamly weak compared to the spartan 2's armour, their strength is considerably weaker.

A spartan 3 is like a lion sure hes king of the jungle but compared to the spartan 2 their screwed

"if you read halo evolutios: cloe protocal it says that ambrose turns him into the only spartan 2 to become a spartan 3[/quote]"

Kurt wears the same armour as the spartan 3s to make them feel equal as him, he didn't want to feel apart from his team, infact is he wore his armour he wouldn't have died in the storyline.

CoD is a good game, even if the Halo series are better in some aspects. Anyone who insults either is just bad in that game. Grow up.

Emile actually says 'I'm Ready! How bout you!?"
The scene actually goes:
* takes forever to kill Zealot with shotgun*
"Who's next?!"
*Other zealot growls, pulls back sword*
*Emile makes no move and ends up stabbed with Energy Sword*
"I'm ready! How 'bout you?!"
*kills other Zealot*

Fixed.

Well, if you really think about it, a majority of the dialouge is unSpartan-like: being as Spartans have always been described as very laconic and speaking quite unfrequently. This could be explained as Spartant-IIIs were very disposable and would thus not have the incredibly strict and vigorous training that their predecessor Spartan-IIs had. That, and it just wouldn't make for as "interesting" a story if all six members of Noble had the equivalent dialouge of John.

The only thing I think Jorge does that is remniscient of a Spartan-II is his sacrifice for the planet, as he obviously does not show the emotional discipline that they were known for up until that point in the story. I really hated how Bungie portrayed him in Reach after having so looked forward to it from what the canon tells us about him.

Also, a quite unSpartan-like trait is Noble's interaction with civilians, as Spartans (of any generation) were not known to so directly interact with the local populace- especially in a situation possibly involving the Insurrection.

[EDIT] I would say the only true (overall) Spartan-like dialouge in the game is that of Noble Six.

Yeah Noble Six behaves more like the Spartans-II

P.S. Emile behaves too like a Spartan-II (I think)

I would agree with you. Emile does have a very Spartan-like persona about him, albeit he is very headstrong and gung-ho.

Woke up to the best place ever; my bedroom. *Turns on Xbox 360*
No, no, no, NO | Infinite Armor Lock?

Emile: "And that's what you get when you mess with a Spartan."
During the "A Spartan will Rise" ViDoc, showing Emile pulling out his huge knife out of a deceased Jackal

I find this line to be immature, ESPECIALLY during the invasion of Reach.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Wait, why are these un-Spartan like?

  • 01.03.2011 8:30 PM PDT

Yes... I can dodge ducks... and slow moving bullets.

Spartan IIIs are more social than the "keep to themselves" Spartan IIs, Jorge is a exception

  • 01.03.2011 9:08 PM PDT

They are spartan-IIIs, all excessively emotionaly and so on.

Jorge however was uncharacteristic. He should've been all duty, no talking to inhabitants or sympathizing.

People say master chief is excessively silent, but he fits the character. If he was with a squad of spartans he's be giving out battle orders and interacting, but since he's all alone, he's generally silent.

  • 01.03.2011 9:26 PM PDT

The one about Emile saying "Who's next?! How 'bout you?" He's actually saying "I'm ready!! How 'bout you?!?!"

If you reread it, you'll notice you are incorrect.

A spartan 3 is like a lion sure hes king of the jungle but compared to the spartan 2 their screwed

The S3's have the exact same augmentations as the S2's, with two differences. They don't have need for a thyroid implant for growth, and they have a 100% success rate as opposed to killing two thirds of the class.

Further, most S3's were genetically "less vibrant" than the S2's. However, since you apparently didn't read, I'll recap.

According to Bungie, Kurt, and Mendez, every S3 they extracted and gave MJOLNIR are identical in genetic requirements to the S2.

Links fix'd.

Also, S-III CHRYSANTHEMUM augmentations were not the same as those in the S-II programme, although they did perform the exact same task.
CHRYSANTHEMUM augmentations were entirely chemical-induced, S-II augmentations were direct surgical enhancements. This is what led to a lower washout rate than the S-II programme.

I heard someone say once (paraphrasing here) "Multiflag on Blood Gulch with your friends is what makes Halo, Halo." I GUARANTEE that more people agree with that sentiment than "Getting a 50 in MLG is what makes Halo, Halo." - Oboewan42
Meta | NHL | Kotor

Not all spartans were rigid, each had they're own personality. Kurt being a prime example. He went out of his way to interact and socialize with crew members or other marines.

Awesome thread. MOAR! MOAR!

I love the entire Halo series, Halo 2 being my favorite of the games. I think that the universe is compelling and the story is deep, sweeping, and powerful. The hidden layers in the Halo trilogy and rich details of the backstory in the novels are something I love to be lost in, and im greatly looking forward to the story that Halo: Reach will weave. Bungie has carefully and lovingly crafted a mythic tale that will stay etched in my mind until the end.

"You look nice" - Cortana

"Thank you" - Master Chief

This is Master Chief and Cortana at the begining of Halo 2 at the medals ceremony.
It is kinda out of place considering it's a compliment and he's being socially polite as appose to military polite. And he says it at the same time as Johnson so it's kinda funny too.

*This isn't Reach but I still think it should be made a point of*
And I don't really want to edit my post to say something like - Nevermind -

He said "Thanks" to Cortana because they had just saved the galaxy together in the first game. Of course Master Chief would be socially polite to Cortana at that point, at least a little. Its called character development, something that Reach lacks.

On a related note, ******'s mom has really nice boobs, and it doesn't take much booze or encouragement to get her to let the puppies out of the pen...if you know what I mean...

[Hoggin'] [Racing] [Mini Games] [Grifball] These are Kshesho's Specialties. Ive got fun new ideas all the time!

Grifball: I am on the team "Grifted" in the GGL and i am the captain of "Hammers of Thor" in the AGLA. In Dash i play tank and in Vanilla i play trick runner. Im moving toward being a tank in vanilla though.

See You On the Court!

Contrary to what this post is about i think one of the BEST lines that describe a spartan is in halo 2. Master Chief says: "I need a weapon." Well actually i think this does kinda help this post but my point is i think this line makes spartans seem bad ass as they should and fits well into Chief's dialog

I don't get it, Jorge is always being told the answers to stupid questions by Carter as if he is the rookie of the team. If anything Jorge should be the leader of Noble team as he is; the oldest, strongest, most military experience, most likely to come out alive from a battle, yet Carter and Kat are both higher ranked. Did Bungie ever give a reason to why a spartan 2 is with a group of spartan 3s?

Carter and Kat are the only two left of the original Noble team and Carter was already the leader. If you look at real marines, the biggest and strongest soldiers aren't usually the leaders.
