All that is needed for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

There are so many other older FPS games I'm too lazy to list them. There's even older FPS games by Bungie themselves...

  • 01.02.2011 3:19 PM PDT

The first well-known FPS was Wolfenstein 3D in 1992. The first actually well-known one was Doom in 1993. Contemporary to Doom was Bungie's first FPS, Pathways into Darkness, released for Macs. Which is what really put Bungie on the map, and got them to start work on Marathon, which was the first popular FPS to use fully 3D free look (and which applies some mind-blowingly awesome storytelling).

Halo wasn't insignificant by any means, but most of what it did in terms of developing the genre is solve the console control problem (with some help from the very FPS-optimized xbox controller), which allowed the modern console FPS boom to happen.

Well said.

This is the average H2 Fanboy.
Xfire: JacobGRocks.
50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

This was the first FPS.

Today, yes. But little over a decade ago it was all pretty advanced.

Yeah, Hitboxing = fail. For example, a certan user from the maw who has never played Halo 2 Xbox online links to this halo 2 bash video (its much less exreme in acutial gameplay) which shows hitboxing, but it also exists in halo 3, which also has unbalanced weps and n00b armor (recon).

Marathon was actually 2.5D, it used a clever graphical trick to give you the 3D feel. Other than that very well said. Battle Zone could also be considered here.

This was the first FPS.

It reminds me a little of Hovertank 3D.

Not even close. FPSs came around in the 90's.

Yeah, I remember freaking out first playing CE because the character's mouths actually moved when they talked.

Well, I didn't say it was 3D, I said it had fully 3D free-look.

I see that. I must have been pretty tired when I responded to that, sorry.

It didn't invent them, though it did usher in a new era of FPS games. It also changed what we expect from a FPS game as far as controls, graphics, etc. go.

Yeah, everyone knows Halo: CE was released before Doom. There was just a technology Dark Age and everything went back to half the pixel count.

Awesome clip, Xelyx. I'd always thought Intellivision's D&D Treasure of Tarmin was the first FPS. (Maybe the dates still back that up...?) Yeah, Gruntzilla, Doom was the one that put FPS on the map. But CE is the one that defined FPS for this gen.
