Subject: The Forerunner (Spoilers!)

Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.

With the release (of the first 2 chapters) or Halo: Cryptum we are informed of a Human-Forerunner war in which the Humans lost and were devolved.

Before this we had been told that the Forerunner were the "guardians" of life in the galaxy. It doesn't seem like they were very protective of Humans, who they fought, killed, and punished.

With this new information is it safe to assume that the Forerunner were not as high and mighty as we imagined but were bent on ruling the Galaxy and enslaving any sentient species they encountered (the Humans were considered un-enslavable)?

Think about it.

"Oddly this is familiar to you, as if it were from an old dream, but you can't exactly remember..."

We're still here, aren't we?

They gave us a new beginning in life.

Hooray?

The Forerunner could be said to be arrogant and imperialistic (in some sense of the word), but not evil. They believed truly that they had the galaxies best interests at heart.

Please help me understand:

Where is this stated by the Forerunner?

The Covenant truly believed (before discovering the truth about the Rings) that they were on a path to greatness?

The Forerunner's belief that they had inherited the Mantle from the Precursors, that they were responsible for all life in the Galaxy and that it was their duty to safe guard it.

That is the very definition of the Mantle

However well you believe that the Forerunner's were carrying this burden of responsibility. It is quite clear from everything I've ever read about the Forerunners that they believed themselves in the right.

Terminal 2 from Halo 3 details a conversation between "Librarian" and "Didact", and discusses "The Mantle".

halo.bungie.org has a Halo 3 terminal archive, you can read it there (second terminal, select normal difficulty when the screen does the red thing).

Until this is stated by a non-Forerunner source (Halo: Cryptum better clear some of this up!) then we must assume that this is the history that the Forerunners wanted any future species to uncover, and is therefore a false history.

[Much like how the U.S. public school system does not highlight the many injustices in its past]

One does not normally introduce one's self and then launch into a discussion of the many babies one has kicked.
It is quite clear that the Forerunner do have a darkside but just because they don't go parading it around doesn't mean they were hiding it. Indeed in the Terminals themselves at the End of the Flood Catastrophe it was acknowledged how the Forerunner's had failed to live up to their ideals. Which is precisely what caused the remaining Forerunner's to leave and why we were left behind to inherit their Mantle of responsibility.

Note that not all forerunner viewed the mantle as highly as others. I seem to remember L telling D to abandon the mantle as it would save his own life. Or something like that.

Which is slightly ironic as she was indexing and documenting all across the galaxy.

I see your point. I would have to agree that all current information points towards the Forerunners as "Guardians" but I will not rule out that they were as peaceful and kind as they are portrayed.

We will just have to wait and see what else is uncovered in Halo: Cryptum.

Old Skool Spartan120! This is the newer profile of Spartan120.

I'm a cynical fanboy. Halo has lost all credibility now that it has left the hands of our beloved overlords, Bungie.

:D Well, that's my contribution to the forum, now, to go play some Halo Wars whilst browsing through the pages of Halo Evolutions, checking the accuracy of the information against my Halo Encyclopedia... wait a second... Damn!

[Announcement Trailer] Halo: Forerunner

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

The Forerunner truely believed that what they were doing was in the best interests of the galaxy. The Mantle was the absolute good, however There is a kind of embarrassment in that slow rise to total fury that Forerunners do not like to acknowledge. It goes against the very Mantle that we so strive to inherit and hold, but to defy the Forerunners is after all to show contempt for the Mantle itself. If you defied the Mantle (or the Forerunner) you had to be put in your place for your own good.

I just wasted a few seconds of your life and you're never getting them back!

Well, humans are pretty violent as the book says, and I wouldn't really be surprised.

Can you provide us a link to this release? Or is it a part of a book you have to buy in store?

By the way, can anyone tell me the story of the Helljumpers and Bloodline comics?

Other than that, it is quite interesting, the release...explains how humans devolved so fast.

I am pretty certain Humanity declared war, and the Forerunners (upholding the Mantle) had to make Humanity safe as a species to survive in the Galaxy. Lets face it, Humans killed off most species on earth, what would we do against sentient life forms who had weapons?

  • 01.03.2011 8:57 AM PDT

OMG a Pwny!

I have about 60 pages left in the book, much of what is said here is wrong. The beginning of the Human-Forerunner war is not explained, but how the humans survivded is. Also people need to realize this war happened well before the Halos were even built.

"The Forerunner's belief that they had inherited the Mantle from the Precursors, that they were responsible for all life in the Galaxy and that it was their duty to safe guard it."

This isn't the Mantle, it's a small part of it. The Mantle is about their entire way of life, building things, eating, protecting life, war policies, all of it.

That is the very definition of the Mantle

However well you believe that the Forerunner's were carrying this burden of responsibility. It is quite clear from everything I've ever read about the Forerunners that they believed themselves in the right.

Dude, how did you get the book before it's out?
I read the first 2 chapters online and if feels like an Indiana Jones adventure so far. Anyway, I can't wait to get it tommorow morning at my local Boarders.

OMG a Pwny!

I work in a large book chain. We can check out books much like in a library. I've had it since New Years Eve, I also have the box.

  • 01.03.2011 9:37 AM PDT

I'm jealous.

OMG a Pwny!

I'm very active on the Waypoint forums, and everyone there is jealous as well. I can't wait for everyone to get their hands on this book so I can geek out with people.

It's unlike any other Halo book, this is hard sci-fi, it's not Dune, but it's original, it's inspired by Halo, but every character is new and unexplored. There's nothing here to contradict anything, and because of the species we already know, some of it is very very exciting.

  • 01.03.2011 9:48 AM PDT

When I heard Greg Bear was writing it, I read some of his books to see how good he was. Now he's my favorite writer of all time. Eon, Blood Music, and Forge of God will blow you away. I know Cryptum will blow me away as well.
