Ignorance is the gun pointed at the head of humanity.

The Geas that the Librarian may have imprinted on humanity during the multi-thousand year Forerunner occupation of humanity probably has something to do with it.

Because magic?

Humans are reclaimers. They'd probably need to know what button to press to access various super weapons scattered across the galaxy.

To be honest, because that part wasn't in the game (and William C. Dietz is not the best author) I wouldn't read too deeply into that.

Although, I would argue that the Forerunner technology was programmed to "talk" to reclaimers.

Chief is "lucky". I always assumed that was the reason he knew how to push just the right button to extend the bridge.

agreed, if nylund didn't write it, i wouldn't put too much stock into it.

The Flood just needs to be erased from Halo canon completely that way we don't have to worry about all the stupid -blam!- in that book.

"In Tutela pro Tribus!"

Master Chief was working with Cortana plugged into his brain, and her whole purpose in existance (as proven in HALO:REACH) was to decode Forerunner tech.

She was, literally, plugged into his brain, and often allowed him to move faster, react faster, and so forth.

With her being plugged into his brain, and her knowledge of forerunner tech, she would know what he was thinking (in this case, looking for which button extends the platform) and could easily direct his finger in the right direction.

Also...just a side thought:

THE FLOOD was basically a novelized version of the game HALO:CE and in the scene where he extends the light bridge....Cortana tells him where to look, again, demonstrating her knowledge of Forerunner tech, and the symbiotic relationship the two of them had.

Yea but Cortana asked him how he knew how to press the button.
"'What did you do?' Cortana asked, her voice alarmed 'I'm detecting an energy spike'
'I...don't know' the spartan admitted. He wasn't sure why he touched the 'button' on the display. He just knew it felt right."

Cortana had no clue what he did.

If quoting from "The Flood"....read what I just quoted.

Like in The Flood, it was said that he somehow knew which button to press to extend the bridge (if anyone knows what im talking about). I believe this happened several times. How does he know that? Am I missing something that I should know?

Well every time he walks near something like a door, terminal, vehicle, ect. a button shows up and tells him what to do :)

Sorry, Mr Staten, you can get out of here now...

I don't really listen to anyone but Eric Nyuland (spelling?) about canon.

Also, I think Cortana knows what to press; the Chief doesn't have to.

Er... Joseph Staten is a Bungie employee, if you should listen to anyone about canon, listen to the guy who wrote Contact Harvest, Halo 2, 3 and ODST...

To me, the man who wrote The Fall of Reach wrote the universe. His is the best work, IMO, and without it, the Haloverse would lack meaning.

Nothing against Staten, but I got through a couple pages of Contact Harvest and stopped. It didn't hold my attention at all. I may try again one day, but it certainly wasn't The Ghosts of Onyx.

And how Cortana systematically infiltrates the system to get a back-sweep of their meanings, leaving Chief to just press the buttons. His 'luck' and her intelligence lead their way.

What I just read blew that out of the water. Chief's unbraced luck is the most probable fall-back right now, seeing as he's pressed the 'right' button that led to what it did/. I'm leaving this up to Wolver, this is far too much for me right now.

"Find The Bomb?!
Find The Bomb?!
I'm Looking For The Flag!
What The Heck Is Assualt!?"

Perhaps all the technology is quite straight forward...

Like the button to extend the bridge was just the biggest one...

Perhaps sentinel beams have a quite obvious trigger...

See you on the battlefield.

Easy, he just pushes buttons until something happens. Unless the panel only has one button on it, in which case it should be painfully obvious. Or maybe the panel is the button.

Warning nerd alert: Maybe it was because of his particular DNA that the panel was picking up on. If humanity WAS modeled after the forerunners, then Master Chief must have had the combined DNA of the last reclaimer (before he was destroyed in the activation of the Halo arrays):Warning nerd alert
