Subject: How does gravity work on a Halo ring?

The ring spins.
Its not gravity its centrifugal force.
Centrifugal force doesn't actually exists. The centripetal force, however, does.

Both types of force exist.

CENTRIFUGAL
1: proceeding or acting in a direction away from a center or axis
2: using or acting by centrifugal force
3: efferent
4: tending away from centralization

CENTRIPETAL
1: proceeding or acting in a direction toward a center or axis
2: afferent
3: tending toward centralization

If it where centripetal, Chief would have been fighting on the outside of the halos, not the inside.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Installation 05 also orbited a planet(unnamed I believe, it was a large blue planet though.) So based on 04 and 05 it's likely all of the rings were placed near a large gas-giant/planet for whatever reason.
That reason was most likely aesthetics. I get the feeling Forerunner had a thing for making things look pretty.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

It spins. The spinning effect causes there to be gravity on the inner part of the ring.

Not... exactly.
There is no such thing as a centrifugal force. There can be such a thing as centripetal forces, but there is no fundamental force called centripetal force (fundamental in the sense that the electromagnetic, weak, strong, and gravity forces are).

See, when something is spinning, it is constantly being accelerated inwards. This is because otherwise, it would simply fly off in a line tangential to the spin. To keep the ring where it is, but still moving, you need a force applied towards the center of the ring. This is called the centripetal force of the system.
Centrifugal force isn't really a force at all, however. Centrifugal "force" is just an effect of inertia. Since the centripetal force isn't acting on YOU directly on a spinning ring, just the ring, your inertia keeps you flying on a tangent. However, the ring stops you (and accelerates you in ITS direction), and so you accelerate on a new tangent. This has the effect of keeping you pushed into the inside of the ring, but it's not a real force, just inertia. The only force in this system is pushing the ring inwards.

Everything will be gone long before me. When the first living thing was born, I was here, waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job is finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave.

And judging by Installation 05, they succeeded by far ;)

OT: Artificial gravity. Centrifugal force wouldn't be enough as the mass from Threshold/Basis would override any centrifugal force Halo might have had.

You should say gravity then. There are 4 "forces"; the weak and strong nuclear, magnetism, and gravity. No one was trying to be so specific, but whatever. We're talking about what the ring does to keep you grounded on the inside. That action is called Centrifugal Force.

Also known as Entropy91
Black Water Ops representative.
See you on the battlefield.

It probably has an artificial gravity field on top of what little natural gravity it would have just by existing in space. In fact, I'm pretty sure most Forerunner stellar engineering makes use of artificial gravity.

Short answer: Forerunner magic.

I'm sure this is explained in one of the bungie books.

It must be artificial gravity because if it moved at the proposed 800m/s then it would be nearly impossible to safely land an escape pod on the surface.

Anything in Space has gravity shape and size don't matter Halo has an atmosphere because it is spinning ... in my opinion it has a solid band of atmosphere going from one side to the other
