Actually they can. They'd probably work better due to no atmospheric pressure.


It would work perfectly. If you would fire a bullet in outer space, it would keep on flying forever. (unless it hits something ofcourse)

Bullets have a percussion cap. The hammer hits the cap and the gunpowder ignites. I would assume the UNSC makes sure the bullets are airtight, so the oxygen already in the cartridge, however small, might be enough to let the powder ignite and send the actual projectile forward. The kickback would send the gun back at an equal velocity (Newton's Laws of Motion). Master Chief could fire a bullet, but it would send him flying back several feet. God forbid he fires a shotgun.
