Subject: A complete reboot of the Halo series

I've seen a lot of talk on the forums about remakes of previous titles, namely Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2. Now, call me unreasonable, but I'd rather not see Microsoft mess with these games, as they're very dear to me; perhaps my all-time favorites. They don't need to be remade, they don't need to be updated, they don't need to be screwed-up.

But, there is a much better alternative. Stop making Halo games for a while. Let 343 do what it is they want to do, but when the series finally dies, the studios move on, and Microsoft finds a new source of revenue, wait a decade. Preferably a few. Allow the series to age; to become a real classic in gaming history. An old icon of Sci-Fi shooters.

Then reboot it. I'm talking a complete re-do. Think about the Star-Trek reboot movie that came out last year. Think about the fairly recent Battlestar Galactica re-boot that was on Sci-Fi. Both, IMO, were excellent, and they were both very successful. That's what I'd like to see done with Halo. Take the universe, the characters, the plot, and remake it; make it a separate entity from the original, both very familiar and strikingly new.

With a reworked continuity, a better-planned canon (the current one is great, but it was created in a make-it-up-as-we-go-along fashion, and could almost be called a rough-draft), and familiar characters in polished incarnations befitting of the new universe, It could be a great thing.

I'd personally love to buy the new Halo series 10-20 years from now, for whatever method of gaming is prevalent by then.

Thoughts?

No.

Battlestar Galactica had a great re-boot because, let's be frank, the original was pretty bad. An attempt to siphon some of the Star Wars fans, and very cheesy.

The re-boot was a serious, amazing sci-fi action-drama and so worked.

Halo wasn't bad or cheesy to begin with. It's still amazing to play today. There is no need for a reboot.

There's no need for a reboot right-now, but in 15 years or so it could be warranted to breath new life into the series. It wouldn't be as extreme as the BSG reboot because, as you said, Halo was never really bad.

I'm talking about down the line when Halo is to whatever is around at the time as Marathon is to Halo now. Wait for Halo to be a classic classic. Then bring it back with a vengeance.

Star Trek, while it could be cheesy, wasn't straight-up-bad for the majority of its lifespan, but its reboot movie was excellent IMO. It did something good for the series, I think. Gave it new life.

I'm not saying this should happen soon by any stretch of the imagination. Let it age. Of course, they need to let it end first before it can age properly.
