Halo Reach - Make a prequel to the fight.
Halo CE - Begin the fight.
Halo 2 - Continue the fight.
Halo 3 - Finish the fight.
Halo 4 - Start a new fight.

Seriously. What the hell happened to the Scarabs from Halo 2? Why did Bungie take it out?

CoD is a good game, even if the Halo series are better in some aspects. Anyone who insults either is just bad in that game. Grow up.

True, but not the answer he's looking for, and there is a canonically explained answer Here
There are two versions, simply put.

From what I've read the one in Halo 2 are only on prophet ships and it was mainly used for excavation rather than combat.

Inside another dead body. It's the last place they'll look
A corpse within a corpse.
CORPSEPTION.
Win.

I like this theory.

Halo 2 Scarab was an excavation model. It appeared because Regret was expecting to dig for Forerunner artefacts.

Halo Wars, Reach and Halo 3 Scarab was the combat model.

Good theory.

This.

Also, Bungie most likely felt that the player should be able to actually combat the scarab instead of waiting for it to walk along some walkways and jump on. Every move of the Halo 2 scarab was scripted, whereas the Halo 3 scarabs have an AI to walk around the battlefield and shoot. It is for this reason that you can actually fight them.

Also, Bungie have commented that the halo 2 Scarab "looked like a shopping basket. it even had the handle" or something along those lines, so I am pretty sure they were unhappy with the aesthetics of the Halo 2 Scarab and wanted to revamp it for Halo 3.

Why is it that the Scarab not meant for combat is the indestructible one, then?

The combat model in H3 could be damaged easily. It doesn't make much sense.

It was scripted to be indestructible until the end of Metropolis.
