Um, you shouldn't "try" to get a sticky, you should just try to create good threads. There is no special perk to getting a sticky, but for some reason everybody wants one. I just don't get it.

Well, that's what I do. I kinda gave up on stickification awhile back. And it's basically prestige People notice it. The other thing people try to go for is a news article on the bnet front page. People notice that too.

err...don't we want them to stay near the top so that they can be locked?

No no no no no! Contact the moderators at bnetmods@gmail.com or PM one of us. You should never reply to a thread that you know should be locked, but I guess that's just my personal opinion. But if you do reply to it for some odd reason, just point out the rule that was broken in the thread. If you think it is worth your time to reply to a thread, then it should definitely be worth your time to contact us to actually do something about it.

No. It's just as effective to let the thread die.

Ok...so, 2 things. no, wait...3 things...1) dmbfan thinks that if we see something, we should do something about it that does not support the thread in any way...which sounds fine. but then again, how often to you mods get a chance to read individual pm's normally? i bet you get alot.

2) goweb says just let it die. I can live with that, but seeing how many are replying to this thread, i don't think the rest of us can unless they live on the bnet mods email address.

3) both you mods are saying different things...is there any specific thing, something that is definable (thus, from a higher source, hint hint) that will let us know on what we should be doing? Or is it up to every individual to figure it out for ourselves...and possibly have the same problem kilroy has had in the past?

Reread this part:

Edit: And when I say, "just point out the rule that was broken in the thread", I mean don't add "Locked in 5... 4... 3..." or any crap like that. I really hate that.

Discipline is my Sword,
Faith is my Shield,
Do not leap blindly into uncertainty,
And you may live to reap the rewards.

"The Important Thing Is To Never Stop Questioning,"

Take some Advice form a guy who has been a Forum Cop since the day he arrived, and has never once gotten in trouble, and only twice been insulted for it: The Best of the Forum Cops are like Ninjas, they work form the Shadows. You dont know they are there, doing the work, but they are.

Of course, but you wont get noticed by the community this wya right? Well, if thats the reason your are trying to be a Forum Cop then stop now and leave. Policing the Forum isn't about Fame, its about keeping rubbish off the forums to save room for good discussion.

Want advice? Report a thread, via PM or Email, and do not reply to it. If you feel you must reply, do it in a PM, and be polite, noone likes that holier than thou attitude. If the thread has already been replied to, or the question answreed, you dont need to echo what the guy above you just said, that just bumps this rubbish and keeps it around longer, and takes up space where the good discussion should be going.

(Since it has come to my attention this isn't always that obvious: This is another General post, not directed at any one person or groups of persons.)

Yes indeed. This relates to Bril's part of this discussion, and this is just what I do:

When I encounter a probem, it usually isn't anything serious. But if it's something kind of serious, I'll PM a mod about it. I PM the last mod I've seen post. Doesn't matter which one that is, it's just to increaste the odds of them being online.

However, sometimes I'll come across a fairly large problem, but haven't seen any mods post recently. In this case, I Email the mods. Simple. The job gets taken care of.

errr....ok, you answered that part, which is helpful, i'll admit (especially since i usually do both, ie: i'll say free beer to the mod who closes the thread, then give a reason why it doesn't belong or is a waste of space), and i'll change my ways accordingly. However, i'm wondering about the other 2 questions (#'s 2&3).

btw, i've offered beer, yet no threads have actually been closed...they've all been moved, so no beers have been sent out. looks like there ain't gonna be free beer anymore.

The second and third question is based on the premise that goweb and I told you different things, but we didn't. We both said don't reply to the thread.

No no no no no!... You should never reply to a thread that you know should be locked, but I guess that's just my personal opinion.

That's difficult to do with an out of place or rule-breaking thread, as usually the person who made it doesn't know the forum rules and general forum ettiquette, so will just repeatedly post such things as "Anyone?" "yo, Noobs! i need an answer now!!!!!!!111!!" to bump their post.

And then we'd see it and lock it.

Either way it ends up dying.

 • 11.29.2005 10:52 AM PDT

alright, i get the drift dmbfan...but what about what i mentioned earlier (saying something funny about how the thread might implode and then giving a reason why it shouldn't be where it is)? Or is that annoying to the mods also unless its really funny?

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

You said Forum Cop and Mod Wannabees like they where the same. Well you know they arnt.

Mod Wannabess do it to suck up to the mods.

Cops do it cuz they want to help

Some of the new mods where cops or MWs but no matter they do the job now right?

Not necessarily Eagles. Some good people who are forum cops are called Mod Wannabees. However, I will agree that there literally are mod wannabees who play forum cop just to try and impress the mods.

I would say that the only case in which an individual should reply to a thread in order to mention that it's off-topic or in violation of a rule is if it is already very close to the top of the forum and if it's only a minor problem (IE a post in the wrong forum). This is partly because I don't think our moderators want to have their inboxes filled to the brim with PMs about all the posts that are made in the wrong forum. (Imagine one PM for every post made in the wrong forum.)

Other than that, if it's near the bottom it's always best to just leave it alone. And if it's major, PM a moderator or send e-mail.

See, that's why I'm less visible these days. I had a fine stint of playing forum cop in the morning hours of the day of the London bombings when no mods were online, and if memory serves I spent a good couple of hours doing an awful lot to try and keep some sense of sanity before Reiginko turned up to sort things out with due authority... but beyond that I'm never sure if my notification is actually needed. It's very rare I find a wayward thread in which the poster would actually benefit from and taken notice of my comments.

But one day, I made one simple mistake of pointing someone to the wrong forum. A Master Moderator decided my chance for playing Forum Cop was up. The rule now applies to me. If I go around telling people when they fracture rules, I get banned. The end. Understand?

So that's the long story... i see. Anyway, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being a forum cop, apart from those that go above and beyond the call of duty and become egotistical maniacs that actually look for ways in which they can exhert their 'authority' over others.
