@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Seemed to work fine until the end.

No, the shielding is a separately generated layer.

The EVA and Pilot helmets´ MASSIVE visor ARE an inherent weakness, seeing that transparent materials can NEVER be as sturdy as opaque materials. Any full face visors would NEVER happen IRL, perhaps CQC or CQB at MAX. Most likely Commando or EOD size visors.

Well you say this, but look how much of the face that modern combat helmets leave exposed. All of it. Commando and EOD have greatly limited fields of vision, not useful in the kind of combat a SPARTAN engages in.

OT: I feel that he wouldn't have been able to see out via the scratched portions, leaving the outer edges of the visor and the 'eyeholes' as his only vision ports.
This means that the reason he got the EVA helmet, for close-quarters visibility, is now negated.

Why not? The advantage of EVA and Pilot helmets is a larger field of vision, which is particularly useful for long range firefights and space combat where the enemy can attack you from any angle. I don't see why the military wouldn't want to take advantage of these types of helmets/visors, do you?

  • 01.08.2011 1:49 AM PDT

I read somewhere that it wouldn't affect shielding or strength it would only affect if he wanted to tint/untint his visor and those parts wouldn't. Also he would still have a large field of vision as it has large eye 'holes' were it hasn't been carved and Emile would have done it to intimate the enemy. If you're a grunt and a 7 ft man with a skull for a face sprints into a room and kills everyone in there with a shotgun and combat knife you would have Blamed! Bricks.

You can call me Lavernius Tucker, Bow-chicka-bow-wow

he scratched it because he wants his helmet to reflect his inner badassness. and it wouldnt affect his shield strength because an energy shield is an entirly different layer of protection

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

It worked fine. The shield covers all the helmet, not directly on it.

His helmet looks BA, but emile is an Idiot. He can't see out of his visor so he stumbles around blindly and fires his shotgun from 200 meters. After he hears that all the enemies are dead, he heads at you using his motion sensor(I've had him actually run off a cliff before just to spawn next to me.)

I think he would see out of it, I think the gold part is a UV/Light protective layer.

Looking out of the scratches would still be pretty bad, because they're scratches in the visor, but overall, he'd still see.

However, due to the Light/UV Layer being scratched, he won't be doing much EVA in his EVA helmet, unless he doesn't mind being blinded by the unfiltered sun(s)...

It's a reflective layer, and that's what he scratched the skull onto. Think of it like paint on a car. The paint is scatched but the car isn't damaged.

Oh, is that all it is? I thought it was more important, maybe with some powerful polarization and UV protection and whatnot.

This is profile number 4

actually been a member of Bungie.net since March-April 2004

... I have a tendency to lose my passwords...

It was always my thought that what Emile saw inside his suit was composed of sensor data from outside of the visor. The Visor is not Glass.

but I could be speaking out of my ass.

  • 01.08.2011 6:55 PM PDT

The damage is the reason that he thinks his Shotgun is a DMR.

No, but Emile is clearly damaged. Or just dumb. I'll go with dumb.

  • 01.08.2011 7:17 PM PDT

All he did was scrath off some UV Reflective paint. It just means that he's not able to do any kind of spacewalks (which, coincidentally, is what the helmet is for) The inside of his helmet still sees fine. It's just another clear layer from the inside.

I put the laughter in manslaughter

Dear Emile,
First of all, I would like to say from all of at ONI, you are an amazing Spartan. You are a warrior who is both fearless and calm in the face of danger. That being said, we have a few complaints we have to address with you.
That helmet you were assigned cost millions of dollars to develop and is probably one of the most high tech pieces of equipment around, only outranked by your suit and other spartan suits. That gold layer is an barrier between you and deadly UV/radioactive waves, as well as a very efficient way of keeping out excessive amounts of light from blinding you.

We understand that you are a feared warrior and want to truly display that image, we really do understand. However, purposely damaging your helmet to have a crude etching of a skull in it is both disturbing and insulting considering all the effort that went into making your helmet as tough and strong as you.

In addition to your deliberate helmet vandalism, we are also hearing of you keeping quite an impressive stash of covenant gear. Now we dont mind that Spartans pick up some weaponry here and there to keep their skills up, however we need those weapons to study them and develop our own plasma technology, not only that, but covenant weaponry has also been proven to be dangerous to humans such as yourself.

You are to report to a series of therapists tomorrow at 0800 hours, and in addition to this, several officers will be confiscating your covenant contraband.

Signed,
ONI

Try scratching a shape into some sunglasses. Then try and look through them. I don't think it's possible, do you?
If you look closely at Emile's visor, the reason the skull patterning shows up white is because he has scratched it so deep that what you're seeing is one of the layers of glass making up the visor.
