For those who dont want to read the novel but want to be up to speed with the current Haloverse.

***SPOILERS***
Finished the book a few days ago, needless to say everyone and every theory was wrong lol in a nutshell....
Precursors created Forerunners
Forerunners kill Precursors
As a parting gift, Precursors create flood as bio weapon in a dormant state
Forerunners self appoint themselves as guardians of galaxy
Flood evolve out of dormant state from domestic pets
Humanity team up with San Shyuum and fight Forerunners and Flood
Humanity beats Flood but loses to Forerunners
When Humanity loses it gets devolved to caveman state by forerunners
Forerunners create rings to defeat Flood
Rings are fired last second, everything dies
Automated Forerunner Tech clones all life in the galaxy to start anew(this part wasnt in the novel but it does happen)

*Honorable Mentions*
*Forerunners live to be thousands of years old
*Precursors live to be millions of years old
*Precursors have 4 arms, 2 legs, a centipede like head and a long barbed tale
*Humanity found a cure to the Flood
*There were originally 12 halos
*Forerunners are arrogant and look down on all other species as inferior
*The flood in its original state was a organic, non living powder. No effect on living organisms except domestic pets. Made them more lively and better companions. After generations of breeding the long term genetically engineered effect kicked in causing them to mutate into what we now know as the flood.

"It is done. By my hands. The pyrrhic solution is ignited. All I have left is the quiet of space to lull me to sleep.
I will dream of you." - The Didact

man, Precursors are freakin wierd...

The Captive is regarded as an extremely dangerous individual. So dangerous that he is compared to the Flood. What i dont understand is how one single individual can be so alarmingly dangerous. My guess? maybe he has on one of the most grand suits of armor capable of untold destruction on a massive scale. The precursors did have extremely advanced technology. I assume the suit made him invincible so their only option was to imprison him.

So the Precursor's were not 'humanoid' in any way and were more insect based?

Damn the Precursors!

Not really, it says the San Shyuum world, the prophets, was a quarantined world. Not in the sense of infection but the San Shyuum werent allowed to leave their solar system. If i recall correctly, the prophets and elites evolved on the same planet. Anyone know for sure?

I am a monument to all your sins

forunners create dinosaurs, forunners kill dinosaurs, forunners create man, man kills forerunners, man creates dinosaurs

Hello,

I am writting this to understand why Franky would kill his fictional universe. I've not read the new book and I will not speculate on it content. If the following information you have posted on the new series is true, then everything published/created would be a misrepresentation from what is presented as a fictional universe. This would also be a copyright infringment of anothers author's work which I seriously doubt Bungie or Microsoft would ever risk. That said, The universe of halo is an amalgum of movie stories, so any conjecture presented is subjective. I will personally enjoy the story as just that a story. Thank you for the spoiler of the new story arch.

What?

  • 01.08.2011 3:21 PM PDT

aha! I read ghosts of onyx and I thought "boy, forerunners are -blam!-s", now I know I was right lol

  • 01.08.2011 4:00 PM PDT

Frankie didnt write this novel, Greg Bear did, with authorization of Bungie. Like it or not, this is the real story that Bungie had in its Halo Bible all along.

Why did they have to convolute the story like this? Before all this crap started up with Cryptum, this is the story as I understood it:

Humanity was once a great spacefaring civilization.

They got into it with a dangerous species that came from another galaxy (I found this somewhere. I think from the book that came with Halo 3 limited).

They could not defeat the Flood, so they activated the Halo array as a last-resort, killing all life in the galaxy.

Their tech re-initializes life that the array killed (including humanity).

After a while, humanity becomes somewhat space-faring again, and discovers ruins of an ancient civilization (their former selves), which they call the Forerunners.

Humanity meets the Covenant.

The Covenant's prophets recognize Humanity for what it is (the forerunners), and attempt to exterminate them (lying to the other species in the Covenant).

You know the rest from the games.

It has been stated a thousand times and made clear over and over in the games that the humans and forerunners arent related.

Signatures are for squares.

This book was by far the best book, to fully understand it, understanding of the Forerunner history we knew of was needed. The story was amazing, and opens so many doors for the Halo series. After Reach, I felt like the Halo series was finished for me, but this book was simply brilliant. Another amazing piece of work from 343i.

Don't insult the book before you read it. It takes some thinking and rereading to really "get" everything. But it's worth it. Pick this book up, ASAP.

I have to agree with Techno Greek on this one. As much as I liked Cryptum, Bear and 343 have changed soo much of the original and arguably better canon that Halo is not even Halo anymore. The new and old canon almost seems like alternate universes compared to one another. Honestly I think the Halo 3 Terminals were more interesting and more thought out than Cryptum as a whole. So many things in Cryptum seem silly and over the top.

I disagree whole heartedly. The most recent 343 canon is much different than what Bungie did. But 343 is fleshing out canon much better than Bungie did. They're showing us things we've asked for, for years. Evolutions and Legends took us to the corners of the Halo universe, places that could've gone untouched. But Cryptum? This was handled beautifully. This is what many of us have wanted to know for so long. The story is being expanded and I love the direction it's going.

Through out the entire Halo Series it is alluded that Humanity are Forunners; at the end of Halo-3 Spark flat out says it to M.C. ,"You are the child of my makers. Inheritor of all they left behind. You are FORERUNNER!". Even Mechadent Bias in Contact Harvest admits as much to the Prophets. And now for whatever reason 343 decided to back tread on that major plot point, something I can't understand. I always thought the revelation that Humanity were the living descendants of Forerunners was an awesome plot twist. Now according to the new canon Forerunners and Humans are related due to genetic tinkering from intergalactic super intelligent Scorpion Aliens( Precursors) that forged them in their image?.............Wut? O.o
