Through out the entire Halo Series it is alluded that Humanity are Forunners; at the end of Halo-3 Spark flat out says it to M.C. ,"You are the child of my makers. Inheritor of all they left behind. You are FORERUNNER!". Even Mechadent Bias in Contact Harvest admits as much to the Prophets. And now for whatever reason 343 decided to back tread on that major plot point, something I can't understand. I always thought the revelation that Humanity were the living descendants of Forerunners was an awesome plot twist. Now according to the new canon Forerunners and Humans are related due to genetic tinkering from intergalactic super intelligent Scorpion Aliens( Precursors) that forged them in their image?.............Wut? O.o

343 was rampant. That was implied many, many times.

Does MB say we're Forerunner? All I remember is him saying, "That is reclaimer"

Regardless, I, as well as many others, never once thought that Humans were Forerunner. That was a silly assumption I never understood people making.
The book was specific to hint that the forerunners and humans were brother species created by the precursors for some reason. The only difference between the original form of forerunners and humans were hair color. The reasons that forerunners got so different was that they mutate themselves many times. Their lifetimes and most differences were caused artificaly by them.

You should always be open to new stuff, just keep your mind open when you read it. This has breathed a new life into the halo story that it desperately needed. Not to mention that the general story in Cryptum is the story Bungie had in their bible the whole time. Its not like Greg Bear changed anything in the story, he just told the story Bungie created with his own style.
Look, man, to me nothing is cooler than the way it was before this Goddammed book.

I liked it when the Flood wasn't created by the precursors, but instead a horror come from a different galaxy that was met with Forerunner (human) resistance.

It was cooler when the Forerunners were called Forerunners because their ancient, deserted ruins were tens-of thousands of years old, and they didn't call themselves that out of zeal.

It made for a better story when it was left up to the player (yes, the player, not the reader) to imagine the Forerunners desperately fighting the Flood for thousands of years before they were forced to activate the array.

It was deeper when the Covenant were utterly unrelated to the pre-activation storyline, and were just a group of alien races lead by the San'Shyum who worship the Forerunner ruins, and don't want the rest of the Cov. to know the truth of the array.

In short, it was more solid when it wasn't handed off to multiple authors to convolute it as they see fit.

We've had almost 10 years of wondering about the Forerunners.
We had enough of that.
It is time to reveal the truth.

That precursor was the Gravemind that was fighting the the forerunners. That means that the flood is actualy contolled by precursers and the precursers created a way to rebuild themselves using the other living organisms. I don't have all the answers and we need the rest of the triligy released but the precurser/flood are actualy really related.

The precursor's tail also came out of his head and they are still humanoid just to point out. They also had 6 eyes and their head was described as being more like the body of a scorpion than a centipede. They are also huge compared to Forerunner/ human. We saw that on the halo 2 scene with the gravemind(Graveminds are similar if not are forerunners).

No, there was a gravemind already established before MB betrayed them, that means the precursor wasnt the gravemind. The first part of your post is 99% speculation. Where did we see in Halo 2 how big the Precursors were? People need to quit trying to come up with extreme plot twists and just accept that they are all different species. The precursors are their own species. The Forerunners are their own race. Humanity is its own race. The Flood is its own race(whatever it is)

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

I refuse to accept this as canon.

  • 01.08.2011 7:27 PM PDT

The book clearly states the Precursors made the forerunners. I personally think the reason they created them was because they were alone in the universe. They were probably one of the very first examples of life in the universe, thats how they had such a head start on the other species, they came way earlier.

Exactly. Anyways, I liked this book. It was cool to see how the Forerunner's history was gotten wrong by both the UNSC and Covenant.

I'm one of those people. I liked that the Precursor, Flood and Forerunner stories were kept *relatively* in the dark. I liked the aura and mystery of it, and now it's ruined.

And in such a cheesy way too. I mean humans and elites vs forerunner? REALLY?

  • 01.08.2011 7:44 PM PDT

Its not humans and elites, its humans and san shyuum, AKA the prophets VS the forerunners. lol

Please keep in mind that most of the "facts" in the original post are pure speculation.

Did you read the novel?

Of course I have. Here are some examples of some false/partially true statments:

Precursors created Forerunners
The exact quote by the captive was "I am the last of those who gave you breath and shape and form, million years ago.", weather or not he was being literal is unknown.

As a parting gift, Precursors create flood as bio weapon in a dormant state
It is still unknown where the ships containing the powder came from.

Flood evolve out of dormant state from domestic pets
A certain form of the flood does, the form our galaxy first encountered. That Floods behavior is quite different than the Flood 'we' know of, meaning the "second" wave of flood (being combated behind closed doors through out the durration of the novel) could could have its origins explained the following novels.

Humanity team up with San Shyuum and fight Forerunners and Flood
Humanity and the San Shyuum coexsisted before the Forunner or Flood conflict. The San Shyuum turned their back on Humanity to bargin their way out of death with the Forunners.

When Humanity loses it gets devolved to caveman state by forerunners
How far back Humanity was devolved is never stated, but it certainly wasn't to a "caveman" state. The very first page describes the the steam engine boat used by the humans to help Born cross the lake.

Rings are fired last second, everything dies
The rings aren't fired (on a galactic scale) in this novel. Small, focused detonations were used by MB to free the captive (presumibly) and attack the Captial world.

Automated Forerunner Tech clones all life in the galaxy to start anew
This never occured in the novel.

*Forerunners are arrogant and look down on all other species as inferior
This is considered stereotyping. The Forunners live in a caste system society, they some classes rank better or worse above others. To veiw an aggresive, greedy species has a "lesser" fits right in to their way of life, rather than proclaiming surperiority out of arrogance.

*The flood in its original state was a organic, non living powder. No effect on living organisms except domestic pets. Made them more lively and better companions. After generations of breeding the long term genetically engineered effect kicked in causing them to mutate into what we now know as the flood.
Again, we can't be sure if this was the floods original form, though it was the first form we encounterd. On top of that, this 'initial' form of flood was more or less turning people into cannibals; they had no drive or desire to obtain information or form a critial biomass.

Precursors created Forerunners
The exact quote by the captive was "I am the last of those who gave you breath and shape and form, million years ago.", weather or not he was being literal is unknown.
A: There is no other way to take this statement, your wrong, sorry.

As a parting gift, Precursors create flood as bio weapon in a dormant state
It is still unknown where the ships containing the powder came from.
A: The last line of the book says "and our answer is at hand" it doesnt take a genius to put 2 and 2 together that the Precursors "answer" is the flood.

A: Whats your point? my post is still correct, now your just trying to make up stuff, once again, my post is correct.

Humanity team up with San Shyuum and fight Forerunners and Flood
Humanity and the San Shyuum coexsisted before the Forunner or Flood conflict. The San Shyuum turned their back on Humanity to bargin their way out of death with the Forunners.
A: Once again, the San Shyuum DID team up with humanity, it doesnt matter how long or what happened, they DID team up, your wrong again.

When Humanity loses it gets devolved to caveman state by forerunners
How far back Humanity was devolved is never stated, but it certainly wasn't to a "caveman" state. The very first page describes the the steam engine boat used by the humans to help Born cross the lake.
A: In a later part of the book Didact says they brought them back and split them up so they were less likely to evolve up to their previous state again. They re evolved again and re established some low tech. This this is the first thing you might have obscurely got me on, although only on semantics.

Rings are fired last second, everything dies
The rings aren't fired (on a galactic scale) in this novel. Small, focused detonations were used by MB to free the captive (presumibly) and attack the Captial world.
A: A swing and a miss. I didnt say it was fired on a galactic scale. i said it was fired. I was liberal with with using the phrase "everything dies" meaning everything near the fired ring dies. Obviously everything didnt die, that would imply that every single thing in the entire universe died, which is silly and implausible.

Automated Forerunner Tech clones all life in the galaxy to start anew
This never occured in the novel.
A:Ill give this one. It didnt occur in the novel however it DID occur.

A:That doesnt excuse them from looking down on other species. I said they looked down on other species because they did.

*The flood in its original state was a organic, non living powder. No effect on living organisms except domestic pets. Made them more lively and better companions. After generations of breeding the long term genetically engineered effect kicked in causing them to mutate into what we now know as the flood.

A: This is the origin of the flood. If you want to be picky you could also go to their molecular construction all the way back to the very first sample created in a precursor lab.

I dont mean to sound like an -blam!- in my reply, but your criticisms are very poor and hardly accurate.
