That isn't confirmed. Infact, if you look deeper into it it's more likely he isn't. The precursor prisoner and gravemind are two different beings.

An earlier post made me think, how did the Dinosaurs come to be?
Possibly Precursor creation or even something before the Precursors.

Lol that's where the line between Factual history and Science Fiction blurs. Don't get Dinosaurs on Earth involved with this piece of fictional work, unless you are refering to the Elites' nickname.

I think Cryptum is really setting up the Precursors to be antagonists. Although things may point to the Flood being the Precursor's "parting gift", there are still some things that don't add up; namely the fact that the powder was extra-galactic and that it "targeted" humanity first.

Don't get me wrong; I liked Crytum and will probably read the next two books, but as far as I'm concerned it's not really Halo anymore.

How is it not Halo anymore? Because you think the story has become to complicated (Which I don't understand, still seems pretty simple to me)? Despite what you may or may not believe this is just as much "Halo" as any of the books or games. This story is something that was always there, but we've never truly been told about until now.

"If you bring your sword to bear harm upon us, with claws and fangs, we will exact a toll."

"An organic life contact-purpose humanoid interface created by the Data Interface Thought Entity which supervises this galaxy, that would be me."

I'm Chinese, but I'm not born in China, I'm Singaporean. Which would explain my relative fluency in both English and Mandarin.

More details... PLEASE!

EDIT: Seeing the other posts in this thread, I'm finally deciding to get this book.

EDIT TWO: Seeing through it again, what I think is, you can be disappointed in what the canon is like now, and I won't say anything as everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, I think it might be because it didn't turn out the way you wanted or hoped it would be. Keep in mind that you should respect my opinion as well.

but thing about it. The prisoner (which is a precursor) was with MB for 43 years and also dissapered with MB after they attacked the capitol.

I belive that this is the gravemind we see in halo 2, which would explain why it was still alive after halo fire [to a degree]. The current gravemind isn't a "true" flood gravemind. which would explain why the other proto forms don't really look anything like an actual gravemind.

this is only my 2 cents in the matter, but i think it is best to wait until book two for all this.

I keep comparing the Forerunners to learning Christopher Columbus, in third grade you learn he discovered America, he was wise, and kind. In the ninth or seventh grade, you learn he didn't find america, he actually founded the small island and was a precursor (See what I did there >_>) to the discovery of America. And he was cruel to the native americans. Now we learn about the Forerunners and we find out they are a little bit arrogant and see all other species as lesser beings.

I find this series to be enlightening to the Halo Franchise, and it's a great time to be a Halo fan, while I do question the flood-powder thing, I love everything. Though I do agree with another previous post, I still think Greg Bear is still writing science fiction, not Halo. Nylund had a certain style and feel while learning about the series, Bear has a small feeling of adventure and knowledge, just for the next two books, add a Halo tone to it all.

I can see while some people don't like it, the Forerunners are being put in the spotlight and aren't in the dark anymore, but to keep them happy, we still don't know an awful lot of Flood-origin history, the flood is still in the dark, but for me the creepy feeling was lost for me after I stopped reading the Mona Lisa and played Halo 3, to me they're just another menace.
Anyway, I can't wait to read the next books and read more about pre-activation (Before the ignition of the halo rings) I'm exciting and can't wait to see where 343i takes this universe further. (Can't wait for Karen Travis's novels about the aftermath of the Covenant-Human war ( The Great War )

When the going gets tough, whine and groan and complain, then post a thread on the flood about how tough the going is and flame anyone who disagrees.

The prisoner kept on Harum Chakkor WAS the Gravemind. The Graveminds were the percursors. The Flood ARE the Precursor.

I don't think so. The prisoner said that his race gave life to the Forerunner. If that is true, what reasons would the Flood have in creating the Forerunner. Plus the way the prisoner was described didn't sound like any flood form we know.

One thing, everyone wasn't cloned. They were stored on the Ark. Then telported to earth, Doisac, Sagheilios, Balahoo, etc.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

The prophets were almost entirely cloned from the few (tens, hundreds, thousands?) San'shyuum that the Librarian saved prior to the master builder activating the Halo above their planet. That pretty much explains the breeding problems their species had (explained in Contact Harvest).

As for the other species...we don't know. There are obviously no Florians (hamanune) or other forms of humans (save for the chamanune) in the 26th century Halo Universe (well, florians reminded me of primates along the lines of chimps so maybe they were saved albeit at a loss of their "humanity"), so something obviously happened to the Human population (if only some and not all were saved and then cloned, it was evidently more than the prophets). I can't even begin to speculate on the Elites (no information) though they were obviously stored on the Ark as well.

  • 01.11.2011 10:43 PM PDT

My only question is why didnt the forerunners clone themselves back into existence??? If they cloned everything else why not themselves?

OMG a Pwny!

Wow OP, you know, it's only the first book in a trilogy, we don't know for certain that it's a Precursor, why was he imprisoned?

You also missed alot of important things in there.
