I keep comparing the Forerunners to learning Christopher Columbus, in third grade you learn he discovered America, he was wise, and kind. In the ninth or seventh grade, you learn he didn't find america, he actually founded the small island and was a precursor (See what I did there >_>) to the discovery of America. And he was cruel to the native americans. Now we learn about the Forerunners and we find out they are a little bit arrogant and see all other species as lesser beings.
I find this series to be enlightening to the Halo Franchise, and it's a great time to be a Halo fan, while I do question the flood-powder thing, I love everything. Though I do agree with another previous post, I still think Greg Bear is still writing science fiction, not Halo. Nylund had a certain style and feel while learning about the series, Bear has a small feeling of adventure and knowledge, just for the next two books, add a Halo tone to it all.
I can see while some people don't like it, the Forerunners are being put in the spotlight and aren't in the dark anymore, but to keep them happy, we still don't know an awful lot of Flood-origin history, the flood is still in the dark, but for me the creepy feeling was lost for me after I stopped reading the Mona Lisa and played Halo 3, to me they're just another menace.
Anyway, I can't wait to read the next books and read more about pre-activation (Before the ignition of the halo rings) I'm exciting and can't wait to see where 343i takes this universe further. (Can't wait for Karen Travis's novels about the aftermath of the Covenant-Human war ( The Great War )
