Hey Bungie Universe. I thought I'd share an interesting tidbit about why Halo the movie was started and seeminly aborted.
Of course this is all speculation and based on nothing but two things: Halo was being made with the assistance of Weta and that its owned by big money.

This information comes from James Cameron's "Avatar" Collector's Edition 3rd disc in the "Capturing Avatar" documentary.
One man was talking about Weta Company's descision to pursue "Avatar" vs two other big "shows" that were offered at the time. "Big money makers".

Instantly I thought about Halo.
I know that there were many other reasons for shelving Halo at the time, but I thought I'd share this with you all.

Yes please.

And then imagine it with Avatar's story. It would be Halo: Pocahontas in Space.

Honestly, I wish a movie would never be made. I cannot bring myself to think that any director save Peter Jackson himself could make it right, and if Microsoft was pulling the strings, I don't even know if PJ could do it right.

I think their just bein careful cuz they know that if they make a halo movie it would have to be the greatest film made in human history, or they're be hated forever by pissed halo fans plus the greatest film in human history is sure cost major money

I'm kinda siding with LordSnakie on this. I'm a little skeptical of if i'd want a Halo movie...

Halo is one of the most important part of my life.

Hope you are rigth. Its a part of my dream.

Actually im currently saving to make a short film about halo... The currently money saved is $1000 Dollars. Anybody interested? Im serious and this is not a joke.

I love the entire Halo series, Halo 2 being my favorite of the games. I think that the universe is compelling and the story is deep, sweeping, and powerful. The hidden layers in the Halo trilogy and rich details of the backstory in the novels are something I love to be lost in, and im greatly looking forward to the story that Halo: Reach will weave. Bungie has carefully and lovingly crafted a mythic tale that will stay etched in my mind until the end.

Its no big mystery. Its stuff most of you know nothing about, which is how studios work in the film industry.

Peter Jackson was pitching the movie at various movie studios, and like thousands upon thousands of other movie ideas that are pitched to big studios but just never get made, Halo was ditched due to various conflicting issues between Peter Jackson and the movie studio.

Director Neil Blomkamp and Executive Producer Peter Jackson simple moved on to another project - District 9. Halo is gone until someone revives it somehow.

I think it would have to made just right. I see where Snakie is coming from and do agree.

I know Bungie is a big fan of Firefly. Now thats Sci-Fi done right.
Anyone ever think that Joss Whedon could pull off something like Halo? I think he be a good nominee for director or producer or executive.

I want peter jackson to go on a mission to outdo even lord of the rings with some halo movies.

That is the only way I can imagine the story getting done.
I think the main need more than 3 movies though. 4 or 5 even.

One covering the events of the beginning of TFOR (halsey finding the young spartans) all the way up to the end of the first battle of harvest with Johnson and co (contact harvest)

Second movie picks up with the spartans getting their first suit of armor (mk IV) which was right after the events of contact harvest, and details the 25 year war. Ends with the fall of reach. Final scene is the poa flying towards halo, just like in halo reach. Introduces the spartan IIIs and noble team. Likewise, almost all the spartans are dead at the end.

Third movie covering the events of Halo CE.

Fourth movie covering the escape from halo and the return to earth to warn them of the flood and covenant.

Fifth movie detailing the battle for earth and eventually...the ark.

No, i dont think he would. Firefly is good and all, but it is supposed to be a bit campy and silly. Halo's tone is a bit more serious than a Space Western like Firefly.

Halo 3: ODST was supposed to mirror Firefly's tone, and its story was god awful. There s no denying it. While Halo overall is no work of Shakespeare, the dialog in ODST was pure cheese. The jokes were NOT funny to anyone above a fifth grade mindset, and the characters were mostly lame, except Buck who was awesome.

ODST is pretty bad as far as writing and story direction go, and Joss Whedon's tone needs to stay away from Halo.

Completely agree. When was the last time anyone saw a good video game movie? Let me answer that question for you, never. I don't want some hack of a director to use a lot of special effect and butcher the story.

hopefully uwe boll could bring his great movie making talent and give us a halo movie we all deserve

I like Joss Whedon, I like almost everything he's done(buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dr. Horrible, parts of Dollhouse), but he doesn't seem to be a very good fit for Halo.

  • 01.10.2011 8:10 AM PDT

I honestly think it came down to the studios arguing with MS just how they were going to divide up the money a Halo movie would probably make.
