Okay, if the grunts have a methane breathing life-support system, and that hump on their backs houses their "air" , then why doesn't it explode when it gets shot or something? Methane is highly flammable after all.

maybe because of the armor covering it

You know i don't think you need explain the question, why don't grunts explode is a great question in its own right.

  • 05.07.2004 1:46 PM PDT

bah

Because Bungie coudn't get things to light on fire right.

Hey I just thought of something funny. If what goes into your mouth comes out of your ass, then the grunts can fart methane. Then if someone holds a match to their ass then fire comes out.
Yeah I know that's stupid but I think it's funny.

well.. technically a bullet isnt a combustble when it is flying... only when it is hit by the hammer in the gun... therefor why would it ignite methane unless there was a massive amount of pressure in the back of the grunt?

  • 05.07.2004 2:02 PM PDT

bah

It is possible that a spark could set the methane off.

Because its a video game and there are tons of inconsistencies in video games.

Perhaps the container on their back is multi-chambered, hundred, perhaps thousands of miniaturized methane tanks so that should a bullet strike it only a small wisp of flame would erupt. Other possibilities could include having it in a multi-part state, each portion being non-volatile and only mixed as needed to form the methane the Grunt needs to breathe.

If you were an elite you wouldn't want all your attacking minions to be miniature bombs. The resulting chain reaction of explosions when even one of them was punctured would surely kill you and if you were aboard a starship you could kiss your fanny goodbye.

Damn I love science...

still grunts have armour that if hit right could make a spark ingniting the methane in their breathing tanks

Look at your AV Shado, there isn't much armour there is there? it wouldn't take much at all to blow.

Good explanation. But what about a direct hit with a SPNKR? Or a sniper rifle round penetrating multiple chambers? Explosive pistol rounds? That would surely start a chain reaction. Perhaps they have a catalyst chamber that neutralizes the methane for safe 'exhaust'.

I still think it would be cool if they just blew the -blam!- up though.

Got to go... so I'll be quick.

You're right on the rocket launcher, that would most likely defeat a multi-chambered system's safeguards. Which makes the second option the more likely.

It would look really cool if they blew up... but I could see them becoming more like suicide troops then your traditional grunts. Y'know, I'd like to see that.... Suicide Grunts, with their own special uniforms, They light up two plasma grenades, slap them to their own chests and charge the chief !!!
