Subject: Halo 2 Vista Graphics and Lag Issues Solved by Forcing Vertical Sync?

Something smells fishy...

I recently reinstalled Halo 2 Vista just to try it out again. Once again I encountered graphical issues.

I did a lot of internet searching and finally after a good amount of searching I happened upon a possible solution. It was an old thread in some kind of Halo 2 vista forum. The last post on the page consisted of a possible solution that essentially stated that in forcing vertical sync for Halo 2 Vista lag and graphical issues would be reduced or eliminated.

I initially believed the graphical issues were caused by the fact that I could not select the proper screen resolution. But once I read the post I was inspired to test it out.

I have an Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT graphics card.

The steps I took to force vertical sync in the Nvidia control panel:
1) I went into the Nvidia control panel.
2) I selected "manage 3D settings."
3) I selected "program settings."
4) I added Halo 2 Vista to available programs for customization.
5) I selected Halo 2 Vista from drop the available programs for customization drop down menu.
6) I scrolled down to "vertical sync."
7) I selected the "force on" option under "vertical sync."

Link to the forum thread I found:

It is the last on the page.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

I have the exact same vid card. Forcing Vsync without capping the frame rate causes almost one second of input lag. I guess that's okay if you plan to use the controller, since aiming difficulty is uh, reduced.

You can minimize the input latency by using FPS Limiter to cap the frame rate to a value below your refresh rate, E.G. 55 FPS to 60 Hz refresh (that's enough to take into account triple buffering).

If H2V is dragging for other reasons than the GPU, using Vsync is just going to tax the system more and cause the game to run worse.

Well, for me, forcing vertical sync improved the game play drastically. I'm not exactly sure as to why. I'm no computer expert by any means.

I honestly don't understand what input lag is. But I can tell you that I'm no longer experiencing any lag.

Also I don't use a controller. I use my mouse and keyboard.

Thanks node:)

Actually, node, you're probably right. There still is a small lag. It's, like you said, the frame rate needs to be limited or capped or something.

Darn:(

By the way where can one download the FPS Limiter?

I need to know this, too. Been searching and all the links are broken.
