This map originally started as a small idea. The idea was to create a structure that had walkways on either end of the dividing wall, the wall that separates red & blue team. Both walkways lead to a center platform, much like the original Foundry. Only difference, it extends longer, wider and has an area underneath and above to go to.
I had other small ideas, but putting them together in forge the way I imaged was no simple task. The idea explained in the paragraph above was the only idea kept throughout the entire process of forging this map. Many changes were made I couldn't tell you how many times I made fixes.
The problem with forging all the ideas had become a failure because I misunderstood the actual size of the map canvas. I had big ideas, but not enough ceiling height to use them properly. In most cases, simpler is better.
So at this point, I started going off track with what I originally planned. Also, I learned about geo-merging, which coincidentally, I went over-board with it and made the map too cluttered-- the map looked opposite to the way it did before.
Running into problems left and right I decided to use reference to the original Foundry map to see what areas are opened and closed. This really helped me to see where my problems were. Although Foundry has some large pieces of cover, there are key areas left open intentionally. This is how you effectively manipulate player movement.
In the end, I landed up with something more like a Foundry Remix. I'm still pleased with it because I learned a lot about forging and how tedious the process can be if not done correctly. As some advise, don't be disappointed if you can't fit all your wonderful ideas properly in one map, because you might find some ideas fit better for a new map of it's own!
This only inspires me to make an even better map in the future. I remember when I finished making my first version of it and showing it to my friends. Being new to forge, I thought I created the coolest thing out there. Everyone thought the lift idea and the structure itself was neat, but said, "It's a little open, don't you think?" By then, I didn't realize what I was in for...
Okay, so enough about the history of the map and lessons learned. Here are some pics to view so you can decide what you think. If you can, please give some feedback, as I'm still open to changing things. Thanks! Hope you enjoyed the write-up. *Oh, and direct me to a H3 forge group that looks over maps if you know any, because I feel this may be the wrong forum.*
